  • Something off with this bottle. Perhaps needs a longer decant? Seemed unbalanced from the get-go. A bit volatile.

  • As always, Charvin is super elegant and pure. I really like these wines, even in the warmer vintages they achieve a level of elegance rarely found in CdP.
Very pretty notes of raspberry jam, some kirsch, garrigue, also some earthy notes, some pepper and incense, also some darker mineral notes. It‘s medium-full bodied, with nice freshness, even in this warm vintage, there is some medium- tannin adding grip too. Pretty long finish. A very delicious, elegant and pure CdP

  • Light red. Some typical bright red fruit on the nose, but thin, very tart, and a dry, obviously unclean finish with an awful aftertaste.

  • Decanted three (3) hours. Deep garnet in color. Reluctant at first but with extended decant exhibited aromas of lavender, red/black cherry, strawberry, garrigue, smoke & black pepper. Generous on the palate; abundant fruit is lifted with vibrant acidity that leads to long evenly distributed finish. Beautifully structured with significant depth. Can be had now with adequate decant but this will undoubtably drink well for a decade and beyond. Lovely.

  • On a warm summer evening such as this, a bottle of Charvin feels perfect, and even more so with the 2017 before me with its intensely elegant nose of raspberries, garrigue and citrus.

Its palate has spunk, length, lots of stars and very interesting flavors of fruit and heated hill shrubs. Its length makes this a joyous song in my mouth. Absence of oak, its rarity, heritage, and purity make this bottle ever more perfect for Monday sunset with the crickets.

I’m somewhat of a strange wine lover as I do not particularly like Grenache, but here, I do.

This cuvee has a delicious crunch, probably from its whole cluster fermentation in concrete. So endearing is this crunch that I’m tempted to create a new word for it: Crunch-Garrigue. The presence of citrus, raspberry and crunch of herbal tars slowly taint my mouth and build with every sip rendering it more crunchy with garrigue. Love this! Excellent! Celebrate on 9-11! I drink to the memory celebrating life as the moments of mortality bring profundity of now.

A case of this to enjoy for years to come! It will assuredly get better.

The next day, 29 hours later from undecanted bottle, poured the last glass:
Gorgeous nose with pronounced cola and berries. Could live in this nose. Flowers, perfume.
Palate of concentrated flowers with crunch of garrigue. It’s concentrated potpourri. Energy galore! It spanks my palate. It explodes in my mouth. It's rich and makes me wow as to its density and levity. Great wine.

As fresh as this is from overnight in bottle with about 6oz left, this is a cellar keeper. It will last for a decade more +.
    Excellent wine. Well made.
I keep revisiting the nose in my Riedel Burgundy glass: Holy fresh flowers aromas with garrigue. Just love it!

  • My reaction on pulling the cork was centered on a bretty aroma — I don’t love brett, and was worried that it might be pretty dominating. But in fact it quickly blew off. With two hours to breathe, medium violet, and the nose has recentered around sour cherry, leather and crème caramel. If you swirl you pick up lavender and herbs de province, and the bretty aroma is completely in the background and comes off as a sort of waxy note, nothing troubling. Fruit is ripe without losing its acidity… soft tannins and long finish. I’ll call this a 91pt bottle, but I would have scored it lower when I initially pulled the cork. Could reach 92-94 at full maturity around age 15.

  • I’ve enjoyed the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape for almost 20 years and, along with a few DOCG’s in Italy, it’s one of the regions I have the most experience with. That being said, I’ve become very judicious with my buying over the last 5 years or so, concentrating on a small handful of producers that I’ve naturally gravitated towards. Domaine Charvin is one of those. No destemming, aged in concrete, no luxury cuvée, modest pricing. They’re just so old school and I just love it. The 2017 Charvin Rouge pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, it’s initially a bit reticent but changes dramatically with about 15min of air at which point it begins to really strut. First with bruised strawberries and whole fields of garrigue. With a little more coaxing, ripe brambles, spiced meat, and lavender join the party. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins (which seem to build with air), medium acid and fairly high alcohol though it never felt like a hot mess. In fact, the wine is beautifully balanced with ample structure providing a foundation for the abundance of fruit: red and black brambly fruit, with Herb de Provence, espresso and a touch of leather and dark olive. The finish is long and satisfying. A lovely Charvin that should deliver in style well past 2030

  • Over several days never opened up, never showed much depth. Disappointing. Whether that reflects the wine or just is youth, I don’t know.

  • Beautiful nose of dried herbs, kirsch, dried red fruits, a floral element, and earth. Lot going on here. Prominent structure, needs some time to fully reward.

  • Nose: The nose is aromatic after 8+ hours of air as it fills the glass with red cherries, licorice, black raspberries, hot stones, mesquite, kirsch liqueur notes, lavender, garrigue, and some spice notes. There is a good amount of elegance to the nose with classic Grenache tones that are beguiling.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with silky, medium tannins and medium acidity. There is a plush and elegant quality to the feel with red cherries, black raspberries, mesquite, licorice, lavender, kirsch liqueur, and some spice notes.

Overall: This was decanted for 8+ hours and it was showing beautifully on the young side. There is a sneaky quality to the feel while the alcohol does have a bit of warmth. This can certainly use a few years to develop as it will benefit, but this is also very much a Chateauneuf du Pape that can drink right now.

  • Color pale garnet. Good nose. Floral notes. Leather, bing cherry notes. Acidity mid. More mid to back of palate. Touch bitter after taste. Needs some time for sure. Tannins are smooth.

  • I don’t usually drink these so young but was curious and the vintage supposedly precocious. This is enjoyable now but needed a few hours air. Lovely congregated red fruit notes, cherry, raspberry and cassis. Spices with anise and herbs de Provence. Despite the ripeness, solid core of acidity and mild tannin. No sense of heat. Tannins really bite on the finish profiling the needed structure. Excellent young CdP. Lots of upside as well.

  • Very mineral, loads of black fruit... Very sappy taste, delicious ripe tannin, loads of strawberries.

  • So good. Deep purple color. Nose shows currants, plums, roasted figs, with smoky earth, graphite, violets, sweet coffee and anise. Big and chewy on the palate, as expected, but the acidity is what keeps me excited about Charvin - and it is lively here. Ripe, chewy tannins but that vibrancy keeps it interesting. Plums, raspberry, blackberry, mixed with earth, campfire smoke, leather, grilled herbs. I should've aged this for five years but it was lovely over the course of two days. Another pandemic wine that I should've aged but was so delicious.

  • More modern end of CdP, but that's not to say there isn't some earth here. Floral nose, real approachable fruit profile

  • Hints of licorice, ripe, dark red fruits, earth and herbs start off the wine. On the palate, the wine is sweet, juicy, fresh and fruity and a nice, soft, elegance to the finish. The wine was made blending 82% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 4% Counoise and 4% Vaccarese.
