  • A magnificent Mas de Daumas Gassac vertical from the private cellars of Allard Jakobs (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Deeper and spicier than the 2014 but more closed, 78% Cabernet-Sauvignon gives it a lot of energy, but it needs five years.

  • Scent of leather, some herbs, fresh fruits of the forest, and a hint of pencil shavings. Freshness also in the mouth, with a good balance of the elements and commendable length. Excellent wine that ideally needs a few more years in the cellar.

  • First time with this wine and it really was something special. ( note see Jancis Robinsons note on this wine and vintage ). The different grapes in this wine is mind boggling but you can tell the basis is Cab Sav. Beautiful , perfumed bouquet which forever changed in the glass. A fruit led wine but so smooth and mellow . Tannins glorious , perfect acidity . Super finish. This wine is so good.

  • Aromas in direction of Bordeaux, with a bit green cabernet aromas and some leather. Fine grained fruit and tannins. Elegant and delicious, still with good structure.

  • Dark ruby. On the nose, loam, blackberry, mocha, green pepper, a nice touch touch of vanillin oak. Lovely winding of well aromatic fruit on the palate with good weight in a sweet acid frame, crisp tannic base. Long winding pure red berry finish. Excellent with mushrooms on toast.

  • Dark and dense. Scents of leather, mountain berries, heather and warm brick. Fine tannins and deep fruit in the mouth. Works wonders as a companion to breast of duck, and will likely develop into something more refined and complex over time. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), but with four other typical Bordeaux varieties.

  • This is a great surprise! Dark and dense ruby in the glass. Nose brings lots of blackberries, hints of blueberries, refined oak, smoke, leather, tobacco. Medium+-bodied, velvety palate, extremely juicy with backbone tannins, superb mouthfeel, long, spicy and tannic-dry finish. Truly enjoyable already today but will surely improve.

  • Beautiful wine, what a harmonious medley! Nose subtle, somewhat oaky. Fantastic tannins, drying yet soft. Fruit shines through, tastes very youthful. Needs to breathe. Smoke, chocolate and tobacco on the the earthier level and for the fruit, cherry, black fruit and plum. Some licorice, toast and cedar too. As this opens up the Cabernet freshness definitely comes through and finishes long, just fantastic stuff and I suspect another 10 years of cellaring will do this well but thoroughly enjoyable now.

  • Very dark (in fruit character), dense and brooding on the nose. Tapenade and herbs; lovely freshness on the entry, fruit builds, has a velvety quality, good potential here. Long with good grip on the finish. Excellent.

  • A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Cabernet Franc (5%), Merlot (5%), Petit Verdot (4%), Dolcetto (2%), Malbec (2%), Nebbiolo (2%) and Pinot Noir (2%). Fermented and macerated for 20 days in stainless steel tanks, aged for 12-15 months in oak barrels ranging from new to 7 years old. 13,5% alcohol, 5,4 g/l acidity and pH 3,54. Total production 81,000 bottles and 3,000 magnums. Decanted for 4 hours, tasted in a Mas de Daumas Gassac 2017-1989 vertical.

Youthful and moderately opaque blackish-red color. Youthful, floral and very slightly funky nose with complex aromas of fresh forest fruits, some woody notes of pencil shavings, light bretty notes of farmhouse funk, a little bit of dank herbal greenness, a hint of ripe blackberry and a touch of graphite. The wine is juicy, ripe and silky on the palate with a moderately full body and complex flavors of fresh blackcurrants, juicy dark plums, some stony mineral notes, a little bit of sanguine iron, light bretty notes of stable floor, a hint of woody bitterness and a touch of sappy greenness. The moderately high acidity makes the wine feel enjoyably fresh and crunchy while keeping the structure nicely in check. The silky medium tannins are quite gentle and well-behaved. The finish is long, juicy and quite crunchy with complex flavors of juicy blackcurrants, graphite, some barnyard funk, a little bit of savory wood spice, light black cherry tones, a hint of tobacco and a touch of succulent plummy fruit.

A very enjoyable, vibrant and youthful vintage of Mas de Daumas Gassac. Compared to the vintage 2015, this feels a bit more youthful and less substantial. While both vintages show ripe fruit and good sense of balance, the 2015 comes across as slightly more muscular and structure-driven, while this is a bit softer and more accessible in its youth. I can imagine this will benefit from further aging, but the overall style is very drinkable already and doesn't scream for any additional cellaring. I imagine this won't be among the longer-lived vintages of MdDG, but instead best enjoyed more on the younger side. Good and very enjoyable stuff all the same.

  • Sweet dark fruit, strawberries, low tannin level, has not yet lost its youthful generosity and approachable, fruit is thinner than in the more profound -15.

  • Not sure what I was expecting ; but this wine is a lovely fresh surprise. Light , lifted and elegant it reminds me more of a great Beaujolais than a quality Bordeaux.
The label invites us to drink within 5 years, or wait up to 20 before pulling a cork. I am so glad I chose the former , and enjoyed a red berry cornucopia mixed with a wonderful textured mouthfeel. Violets and damson, like a perfect Barolo , also switch on taste receptors evoking the best of that Italian giant. No decant, no food , but it still held my attention resolutely until the final drop.

    Beautiful wine.

  • Muted nose however well made, interesting on the palate - ferrous/iron-like/bloody taste, raspberry, earth, saline, leather, tobacco, cigar - almost Bordeaux-esque but unique flavour profile, very interesting. Full bodied and heavily tannic - probably too young to drink now unless balanced out with a steak. Fantastic value!
