Wine Workshop: Clos du Mesnil vertical (Atera - 77 Worth Street in NYC): Enter the rockstar. I mean we knew it would be and unlike with the '96 where I thought the hype was maybe a bit overdone this lived up to all that I was hoping for and more. It's a unicorn wine. Truly beautiful. All fresh and minerals and apples and evolving in the glass and maybe a hint of honey or caramel and then maybe a little touch of the herbs. Pure class. Special for sure.

Krug Clos du Mesnil – Complete Vertical 1979-2006 tasted blind (Singapore): The last flight was blessed with several “as good as it gets” bottles. Arresting nose with complex aromas of tangerine, caramel, dried raisins. Despite its age, the palate is fresh with bright acidity. Endless finish. Simply stunning and the group’s favorite on this flight.

Complete Vertical tasting of Clos du Mesnil en Magnum with Olivier Krug (Berens am Kai 1 star Restaurant): Complete Clos du Mesnil Magnum tasting, all bottles opened 3 Hours before, not blind The legend delivered again perfectly. Still fresh with bubbles, showing softly light aging signs but lemon dominated. All guests guessed in the nineties. Such a beauty but 1981 was the winner in this flight. Maybe the most elegant wine of the night. 99

World's Greatest, Hong Kong - Night III (8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Macau): This nose is pure café latte, light roast coffee and very creamy. Think coffee mate in the best possible way. Coffee Crisp, for any Canadian viewers. Cashew butter. Bruised yellow fruit. Mature but not tired, still fresh. Whiffs of vanilla. Only grows and lightens up with air. Still some citrus. On the palate this is warm and round and buttery. Peak maturity and development of flavors but still fresh and powerful. Red and yellow apple with a dash of fall spice. Still has citrus. Wonderful.

A complete vertical tating of Clos du Mesnil. Richard Juhlin joined as special guest. 16 participants. It was not a blind tasting, starting 2003 and ending up with 1979. My rating average was the second highest followed by RJ.
The overall Top 5: 1979, 1981, 1988, 1982, 1996 (1981 was rated 7 times at 1st place, 1979 only 3 times)
My Top 5: 1988, 1979, 1996, 1985 and 1981
This is a jewel, no oxidation signs, still young, nuts, almonds, vanilla, brioche, potential for 20 more years, didn't reach his peak, never ending finish, 99+

A private tasting (Restaurant Behrens Am Kai *, Düsseldorf, Germany): This is how I imagine a perfect, fully mature Clos du Mesnil should be. Seamless, very complex, hint of malt whisky, concentrated yet elegant, subtle tertiary aromatics yet perfectly fresh, forceful yet gentle, subtle phenolics, red grapefruit, relaxed but with lovely tension, long and layered finish. Still has a lot of potential too. A dream.
Saturday Dinner.: This bottle was a touch more advanced than is typical and showed both its usual intensity and a maturing side that was interesting. Great way to start off the dinner.

Medium yellow (actually lighter in colour than the 1989). Intense notes of marzipan coming out of the glass. Prickly on the tongue, and super intense on the palate. Large bodied and marvellously structured with lots of material for keeping. Crisp acidity, provding great freshness. The wine was focused and balanced, and everything seemed to interplay very well. The sweetness of flavour was sheer brilliance, and the aftertaste was long and powerful. GREAT.

Pre Auction Wine Tasting w/ 1962 Unico & Krugs (NYC): One of the finest Champagnes I've ever tried. Totally out of this world. Very young for an 18 year old wine. Plenty of life ahead of it for sure. Great citrus and spice flavors. Unbelievable acidity gives this wine such a refreshing mouthfeel, yet it's thick and rich like a fine Grand Cru white Burgundy. Killer finish. Wow!

Fantastic. As good as mature Mesnil gets. Complex yet with a light touch. Still plenty of energy here.

Greg. Finer, more elegant and balanced than straight vintage from aromas to palate. The operative word is precision.

An absolute rock star. Great combination of attack, citricity, and beginning of maturity.
