This has concentrated, spicy, dark fruit, a firm structure and good length. We tasted this alongside the remains of yesterday’s Guigal’s Côtes du Rhône 2019 and this was definitely a step up. Will keep well and improve.

Still pretty astringent straight from the bottle but a couple of hours of air sorts it out. Quite intense black fruit - black cherry, blackberry, plum - and some oak on nose and the relatively savoury palate; it has lost its initial sweetness of fruit. It’s well balanced, full-bodied and hearty with high tannins.

7th of a case. Tannins are still a bit overpowering and it lacks freshness of fruit, but it works well with food and should hold easily for a few more years.

Too much heat on this wind. Seemed a little bit out of balance. Not the best Coudelet I have had for sure. You always want to taste some decent fruit but not much showed up here.

Gosh how many years have I been buying this wine … tonight a first with a 2017 as it seemed quite unbalanced to begin with. Very big almost Pinot type fruit, and a bit ungainly (fleshy?) … several hours later the tannins more evident but not much in the way of spice / pepper. There is residual heat but a different style than I am used to

50mm natural cork enclosure. Here I am again with the Baby Beaucastle, about 12 months on from the last. Med (+) Ruby with a hint of garnet. Med intensity nose. Spice, vanilla, red fruit, plum, cassis, raspberry. Med acidity, Med body, med(+)fine tannin, pronounced intensity. Length is adequate, balance is OK. Drinking well right now, which is good because I have a few bottles to get through.

Medium deep, plummy reddish purple in colour with barely any fading in colour to the rim. Warm, inviting and fragrant nose full of sweet red and purple fleshy fruits, light garrigue, and a hint of oak and black mulch on the nose. Full bodied, super sleek and smooth, gobs of sweet ripe fruit extract, round full and beautifully balanced. Flavours of sweet stewed plums, field berries, fresh garrigue, light mulch and a hint of stoniness on the palate. Quite silky and smooth and sensuous. Lovely sipper of a wine! Easy 93 points.

Dark berry jam nose, biscuity, slightly rubbery. More vibrant on the palate, garrigue, spice, and more enticingly fruited in the mouth - but ultimately this doesn’t offer much in the way of presence or length. 84-86

Big Beau yesterday; baby Beau today. Pristine cork on this one. Similar colour as the Big: black cherry but more pomegranate at the rim and a tad more translucent. Some initial yeasty notes on the nose give way to a pot pourri of fruit, spice and garrigue aromas. Red plum, cherry, fennel, baking spices and mulch. Later on some blackberries as well. Sweet, perfectly ripe fruit, tangy spiced wood, crunchy acidity and grippy tannins on the finish. Amd again later on some meatier notes emerge. Nicely smooth, well balanced and quite a long, dry finish. Excellent quality and worthy of its nickname!

Ahh! So that's what tar tastes like in wine! This is fresh blackberries up front, with tar and pine wood, and spicy black pepper and rosemary in the aftertaste. It's acidic, it's tannic, and it's "tight." It's quite intense. I think this will open up significantly with age and makes me wish I had storage space. I want to drink more!

Excellent wine. Coravined a glass—that’s all I can drink at a time. Cherry bomb on the nose after half an hour. Took a sip at an hour or so, and it was all fresh plum. After two hours, tar, licorice and spice predominated. Long finish with lingering , fruity chewyness. It’s not the kind of profound wine to make you ponder the meaning of life; it just gives you a jolly time. Great QPR, too.

The wine is showing a bit more ripeness (and sweetness on the nose) tonight compared to my last bottle. Fairly long finish after a lot of air. Quite lovely fruit. Tannins are a bit rough. There is some bitterness on the finish. Not as beautiful as the 2016 Coudoulet, which I also tasted tonight.
Day 4 update. I left this in the fridge for the last few days, and now am finishing it on day 4. Surprisingly it still shows well today (in fact, I think I like it better now - it's a bit softer and easier on the palate). Good stuff - should age well. It may be worth decanting next time.

Might be my favorite vintage of this yet. Ripe blackberry, with hints of oak, tar, and garrigue, all perfectly integrated. Lush mouthfeel, and enough acidity to keep it fresh. Still somewhat tannic, and while delicious now, this could definitely go on for another 5+ years.

Described as the Baby Beaucastel (cheaper). 50mm natural cork enclosure. A young ‘un with medium ruby/purple colour. Medium(+) intensity on the nose. Spice, ripe dark fruit (jammy perhaps), cinnamon, damson, cassis, raspberry, pepper, vanilla. Dry. Pronounced palate, bit chewy with high and fine tannins. High acidity. Don't know why I opened this really, as these need quite a bit more time. Meaty and rather serious for the price, but it's moved out of any enjoyably fresh stage it might have been in for prior bottles. Give this a long decant or a few years in the cellar.

I love Rhone wines as I started my wine journey in this appellation, and this is my first Beaucastel. The primary nose has a cherry and smoked meat, and has a white-pepper, mossy forest secondary smell.
The finish was smooth with an unripe plumb taste.
It could definitely use a few more years to age and round out the taste. I will go back to purchase a bottle for aging.

This so-called baby "Beaucastel" never disappoints. Poured through and aerator. Deep ruby-crimson, tainted rim and tears, 14% abv. Aromas of black fruit, brambles, licorice, and oak. dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, medium ripe tannin, medium(+) alcohol and full body. Palate follows nose with blackberry, black cherry, licorice (drop for the Dutchies), bay leave, and black pepper. Balanced, warm, hedonistic. Good length with comforting mouthfeel during sweet-tannin finish.
Very good QPR, beats many grown-up Chateauneuf du Pape neighbours. Cellaring 2-5 years will improve the balance and depth.

Latest vintage available in the SAQ. Very dark red plum colour. Very fruity nose of dark red and black berries - spiced red plums, dried strawberry, blackberry and black cherry. Also baking spices, fennel, dill, and roasted chestnuts on the nose. Deep and rich smelling. Medium full bodied, sweet ripe fruit body, medium acidity, buried alcohol. Quite nicely balanced. Palate follows nose with the same dark red and black fruits, brown spice and some woody notes. Spice, juicy fruit, oak and fine grained tannins on the off dry finish. Lovely but young. 92 points easy!

After a few hours air this was sensational. Dense and brooding being some fine tannins and considerable acidity. Elegant red fruit and floral notes really lift this. Comes across as powerful, but not particularly heavy. Could use some time to soften a bit.

Is there a better red wine under $30 from France? This has to be in the top 3 for sure. Never disappoints year in year out, dark crunchy fruit, fresh herbs, black pepper, dried spices, and a little earth this is full-bodied, lush yet with a nice savory backbone, finely grained finish.

Decanted 30 minutes before tasting. Deep purple color with long legs. Fairly reserved on the nose with a pop of vanilla overlaying a blackberry juice core. Medium-to-full bodied with tannins that had a light grip before quickly dissipating and low acidity. Dark fruit flavors, especially plums, interwoven with some chalk. Very drinkable but the lack of acid made it feel a bit too heavy for my taste. Paired well with pasta alla vodka.

Slo-oxed for 15 minutes, but at this time a 30 to 60 minute decant would yield better results. The nose showed lots of red fruits - raspberry and strawberry - along with some spice and a touch of garrigue. On the medium to plus bodied palate there are those same red fruits, spice and garrigue, along with juicy acidity and some lingering tannins. This wine should hold for at least the next 5 to 8 years, and is best served at between 61 and 65 degrees F.

Full body, deep purple color. Exciting, fruit forward aroma of cherry and blackberry and dried plum and pepper and some earthy notes following by some sweet and bitter cherry on the palate, lingering hot and spicy but very juicy finish. Rich and complex but not too powerful, bold and well balanced, opulent tannins and vital acidity. Food friendly, sure this wine for meat but tasted with pilaf. Serve 16ºC - 20ºC. Open one hour ahead. Drink now and to end of the decade.
Pale purple color, medium aromas of dark fruit and cedar. Dark plum and currant on the palate with a prolonged finish of forest floor and even a little apricot. Grenache 30% Mourvèdre 30% Syrah 20% Cinsault 20%. Quite delicious. At $30 on very high QPR value wine.

For Baby Beaucastel, this is very good, including relative to many past vintages. Not at its peak yet, but already enjoyable and impressive (for the price) after an hour or two of decanting. A good combination of simplicity and character/terroir. Worth buying more.

High-value wine from a high-quality producer. Earth, mushroom, rocks, some cherry on the nose. Mineral-driven palate. Fruit-dominant, minimal tannins. Medium acidity. Finish is impressively long.

Trade tasting: Not as full as the 2016. Has full aromas of white peppers, chalk, plums, raspberries, cherries and blackberries. Its medium bodied fullish peppery and lightly smokey blue, black and red fruits palate ends medium long, fresh and tapering. 14.5%. Needs 2-3 years laydown. If not enjoy with carnivore food such as lamb chops!or a rare rump steak in a pepper sauce.
At this early stage, the wine is full flavored, with a tart wild berry attack, and a strong building finish. The attack and finish somewhat overshadow the midpalate, but this should come into a nice balance in a couple of years.
Because this is so young, it may not be a great food wine yet. You'll need some red meat or something else substantial that won't get overwhelmed by the wine.

I've heard some suggest that this wasn't a strong vintage for this wine, but based on this bottle I'd definitely disagree. While still exceptionally young, this was really showing its Mourvedre at this point, and to me that's a very good thing. Vibrant fruit upfront, with significant density and depth in the mid-palate. Finishes fairly long with tannic bite. Over a few hours you can sense more from the grenache, but luckily (for my tastes anyway) this really feels driven by the Mourvedre right now. Meaty with some astringency and slight camphor notes. I really liked it. If there's a concern, it seems to teeter on the edge a bit - it could get softer and less defined, become a bit anonymous; or the parts could develop even more nicely and evolve into something even better. Right now, for a young wine, this is very good stuff, and I'm thinking I should buy more.

Beautiful wine - for the price it's incredible. Full tannins. Nice fruit. Good acidity. Similar to (very good) Gigondas by my taste. Peppery, garrigue scents. Glad to have 11 left. Should drink well at least through 2030. On day 2 this is really showing full expression. No longer as dark as my Gigondas comparison. Now it has lovely cherry notes and a nice classic Beaucastel freshness. Wonderful wine. Day 1 was a 92 (didn't give it much time on day 1), day 2 94.

Medium purple color. Elusive on the nose, but gives up aromas of maraschino cherry, red plums, dried spice and gravel. Medium-Full bodied, creamy texture. Dark fruit and hints of blueberry on the palate, with a finish that is full of assertive, grippy tannins. Rustic, balanced, savory. Very young and needs some time.

Nez: Intensité aromatique assez ample, assez « straightforward ».
Note : 16/20 i.e. 90/100

Still too young and a wee bit hard but with just a little bit of air. more fruit is showing, It's a sound wine, certainly, has a stirn local feel, minerals and tannins - will be better in 5 years and keep much longer. 90+

3 hour decant. Nose and palate of sweet red fruit and plum.
Will be looking to acquire more and keep in cellar for a bit.

Full-bodied red. Blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah. Black fruits, plummy, spices, liquorice and vanilla, hint of cured meat, black pepper, plenty of garrigue, farmyard, leather, earthy with velvety tannin and long finish.

Very good wine for the price. 5 hour decant and the wine was so well balanced with jammy fruit. Typical Rhone wine. Coudoulet is always so consistent.

30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and 20% Cinsault
Full body, deep purple color. Exciting, fruit forward aroma of cherry and blackberry and dried plum and pepper and some earthy notes following by some sweet and bitter cherry on the palate, lingering hot and spicy but very juicy finish. Rich and complex but not too powerful, bold and well balanced, opulent tannins and vital acidity. Food friendly, sure this wine for meat but tasted with pilaf. Serve 16ºC - 20ºC. Open one hour ahead. Drink now and to end of the decade.

Flavorful and aromatically complex, but not my cup of tea. Hollow core of amorphous ripe fruit. Well seasoned with black pepper, garrigue, and game aromas. Acidity is moderately low, and tannins are weak. Lacks depth.

Rustic, quite full, a bit smoky, very true to the domaine-style; too young, certainly, tannins are very present, a couple of years will do this good, I think

Nez: Intensité aromatique assez ample, assez « straightforward ».
Note : 16/20 i.e. 90/100
