On the downward slide but still delicious. About 30 minutes in the decanter helped round out the edges. Great experience, but based on this bottle would drink now.

It’s generally hard to go wrong with well-stored 2002 Switchback of any varietal, and this magnum of merlot was no exception. The wine was deep and dark and medium bodied. Still some lingering tannins on the finish but the delicious length of blueberry and cassis is front and center. Only a hint of tobacco. Super pairing with grilled salmon. On day two, the last glass from the room temperature bottle was even better than last night as the fruit was sweeter and the tannins more distant.

Better than the bottle I had last year. Drinking very well for a 16 year old wine. Drank a glass from the coravin last week and opened the bottle last night. Let it sit for an hour or so and then poured using a vintorio. Red and black fruit on the nose. The palate was blackberry, dark cherry, red meat and chocolate. The finish was long and lush. It is really evolving nicely. I have one bottle left which I will save until next year.

Nice smooth mellow wine. Was a little concerned as the cork was soft and broke as I took it out. Wine was in good shape and improved after about a half hour. Slight cinnamon note, with tobacco and leather. Considering vintage, drink now or you will regret it.

Opened quickly to a nose of dark fruit and mocha. The palate was dark berry, tobacco, mocha and a touch of wood. A nice smooth finish made it a really nice bottle especially at 15 years old.

Dark, concentrated yet velvety. Last had over 2 years ago and the tasting note from then is very true today. Toss in some additional dried leaves and it still rocks!. "Dark, blueberry, blackberry, chocolate, that finishes with a black olive. Everything is so integrated and balanced. Great place right now. Fantastic."

Roasted red fruits, but still maintains lively acidity. I see the Foley signature in terms of ripeness. Drinking nicely at age 11, however still has plenty of life in it. This was probably a monster in its early youth.

Showed extremely well, even compared to other bottles. Opened right out of the gate but improved over time. Gorgeous dark chocolatey, blueberries, fig, dark roast caramel and nuts. Really dark coal and black accents. The finish is creamy and really smooth. A great showing from this flashy styled Merlot. Time after time, along with Paloma and Pahlmeyer, it's one of the best out there.

Still quite good with this bottle suggesting some years left in the drinking window plateau. Dark fruit, light earthy/smoke characteristics on the nose. Nicely mature fruit with savory and still vibrant acidity headlining the flavors with a finish that brings back the meaty and earthy aromas. It's a big American merlot, but not heavy.

Opened for an hour, then decanted and consumed over 3 hours. 2 hours in the decanter seemed to be the sweet spot for this. Medium to heavy in weight, sweet tanins are perfectly integrated. Dark fruits, hints of spice and vanilla, smoke, maybe some game/fowl. Coats the mouth nicely, a little sourness on the finisn, but overall this is my idea of what a new world merlot should be. Drink over the coming 2-4 years with diminished time in the decanter.

Delicious. Have to agree with the recent reviews that the 2002 Peterson is drinking very well. Nose is a bit light - darker fruits (dried bing cherry?) and some alcohol, but in the mouth it is a fascinating melange of matured, smooth fruit followed by light tangy, saline/meaty/smokey essences that follow into the finish. As I chew on the long finish, the only elements that prevent a higher rating is the development of sour/bitter flavors at the end. The balance suggest that it is at the latter part of its drinking window.

Wow - this is a profound wine. Medium to full-bodied. Its strength is on the palate more than on the nose. Cinnamon, blueberries, spice. Loved the superb round mouth feel. Tannins are perfectly integrated and drinking at what I would guess is absolutely peak. Enjoy!

Popped and poured. In a great spot right now. Rich, explosive fruit but still has and aged profile and complexity. Mocha, some plum and tobacco on the finish. PLush but structured; could be mistaken for a good older cab.

Decanted half the bottle and drank the balance out of the bottle, over a 3.5 hour time frame. With some brief air this started as an excellent wine and only continued to improve. Dark cherries, oak and a little alcohol on the nose; medium to full0-bodied, this is a near-perfect balance of fruit and depth for a merlot. Chocolate, more black cherry, this is drinking extraordinarily well at present. Best 2 hours after opening.

Popped and poured. Johnny brought a bottle into Cafe Bionda with Sylvia and her sister. I was poured a taste. Gorgeous deep ruby color. Faint hints of brick red at the rim. Nose of rich milk chocolate, dark cherries, dark raspberries, cedar and vanilla. Palate is rich, full bodied and boasts an opulent mouth feel. Layers of fruit, vanilla, mocha and charred wood. Gorgeous. Another fantastic Merlot from Robert Foley.

Big and sweet on the palate. Some sweetness on the nose as well. More in the plummy taste profile. Tannins are faded and not much acid to speak of so I do not think its going to make old bones, but it tastes pretty good right now.

Right off the bat, this is a merlot so concentrated -- so dark -- you can't see thru the glass. Completely opaque. Intense, deep aromas of sweet fruit, mocha and vanilla. On the palate, you get smacked with gobs and gobs of rich, dark cherries, sweet coffee, and a dab of clove or a spice in that range. It's a wine that is heavy on the tongue and it has a tannic wallop, but its not overbearing or harsh. The finish lasts and lasts, seemingly for over a minute and you keep tasting this sweet juice as it evolves and fades. This is a big, bruiser of merlot and we quite enjoyed it with our barbq'd steaks on Labor Day. A great way to top off a sensational weekend with family and friends.

First time I've had an 02 and it was delicious. Notable cocoa (almost powdery) element with dark berries and great mouthfeel. This is drinking beautifully and for my drink 'em young passion, I'd be knocking these off if I owned them. Interesting the 03 showed a notable red fruit profile to me versus dark in this one.

Tasted September 8, 2006 at an offline. No notes taken. Decanted tableside and served immediately. As the wine warmed and had about 30 minutes plus of airtime it really started to show well. Very fruity, somewhat candied like style of wine. No rush to open this one. If opening now serve a little above cellar temperature and decant at least 30 minutes to jump start. I’ll likely wait until next year to open my next one.

I know this looks very high for a Merlot of all varietals seeing as it usually lacks the complexity of many grapes and from the recent bad press from "Sideways". However, this is the best wine I've had in recent memory. You can check my other ratings, I usually go lower than the CT average on many a good bottle of wine. This one was just something special for me. The nose is full of sweet aromas; cherries, raspberries, and loads of other sweet fruit. The scary thing is that even though this is a merlot, I dont think it has reached its prime yet. Good thing I have 3 more bottles cellared away. Can't say enough about this wine, just beautiful.
