(Blind verkostet, 13.5% Alkohol) Kräftiges Rubinrot. Kräuterwürzige Nase, feuchter Stein, Teer, Brombeere. Im Gaumen gradlinig, etwas karg, verhaltene Frucht, gute Säure, eher kurz im Abgang. Ein Wein mit Ecken und Kanten, braucht ein Stück Fleisch. Bis 2028 geniessen.

Intensely perfumed: if wine was just for smelling, and not a drink, then I'd have to award this a massive score, as the suave aromas of leather, petal and spice were utterly intoxicating. Somewhat rawer on the palate, though, and in fact I suspect the wine could've done with a couple more years in bottle, as the tart, liquoricey fruit was exceedingly primary and there remained some occasionally obtrusive sandy tannins towards the finish. Very glad to have tried (and, in particular, smelled) this, though.

A super classic and authentic Dolcetto, from a vintage that brought sap, intensity and a meaty, juicy cherry fruit. A Dolcetto with substance and identity. Beautiful to drink now and over the next couple of years.

Freshly perfumed and fairly complex (floral/earthy) with pronounced intensity of blue fruits, smooth tannins and shining acidity. Not too early to enjoy, but should develop gracefully. Seriously outstanding dolcetto.

Explosive flavors of dark fruit and mint and especially menthol. It opened with big earthiness, then settled into a seductive and elegant balance of bright fruit and captivating tannins.

Sweet, dark cherry and leather. Concentrated fruit. Supple texture. A serious Dolchetto, accessible today thanks to the ample fruit, but capable of aging.

A nose of fresh cherries, earth and violets. In the mouth it is direct, with intense cherry fruit flavour. It is tinged with all sorts of savoury nuance and is full and silky. It finishes with good crunch and is persistent. This is Dolcetto of serious build. As delicious as it is now you know there’s plenty in reserve for further development.

Oh so good. Dark red moving into some darker berry type fruits but with a iron-rich clay earthiness on the palate, dark flowers on the nose. Gets even better with air time. The more I drank of this bottle the more sad I got that I didn’t buy a case of it.

The colour is dark, intense ruby with purple tint. The nose is quite modest, but with some patience I get black berries with a hint of something brighter, some earth, iron, sweet licorice and coffee. On the palate, the wine is chewy with good intensity. I would say full bodied, but it is lacking a bit concentration mid-palate. The acidity is good, the finish is structured and quite tannic. The taste hangs in there for quite a while, with the faintest hint of bitterness at the very end. Athough this may not be the best Dolcetto I've had, it's a really good and easy going wine which matched perfect with the Friday pizza.

At Hoogan & Beaufort - 13.5% - Clear, med to deep purple-ish / clean, pronounced intensity - Morello cherry, blackcurrant, bramble, spice box, tobacco, floral lift of violets / dry, med to high acidity, med to low silky tannin, med body, med to pronounced intensity, med length. Youthful, vibrant and concentrated. This needs to breathe. Most likely the most memorable encounter with a Dolcetto I've had.

Piedmont; 2/11/2019-2/15/2019 (Alba, Italy): Brilliant dolcetto, with that classic 2017 ripeness, but also a wine that veers far to the red side of the spectrum as opposed to the black. The fruit is exuberant and plentiful, and creates a very pleasurable drinking experience. Underneath all that sweet fruit is some serious acidity which provides this wine a very firm backbone. A slight hint of spice adds more interest here as well.

Sour cherries, violette, strawberries. Medium/medium + tannins. Medium alcohol. Smoother on day 2. I like the rather rustic style.
