Hugel was such a surprise when we visited them in October 2010, and their wines are amongst my favourite Alsace experiences. This Gewurztraminer didn't disappoint, although it's definitely time to drink the final bottle next (!).
A warm, pale golden yellow with distinct 'legs' combines with a rich, complex bouquet of yellow honeysuckle flowers, some lychee but also a pleasant musky smell of diesel / terpene that shows distinct age. The mouthfeel on this wine is super for one outside of the Grand Cru classification, showing a rich and long spicy taste, with some elements of mango / lychee. It's not too sweet, with just a little residual sugar balancing that spiciness.
Definitely one to drink now, but a nice experiment in drinking an older gewurztraminer.

Tom and Kathy had this open when we arrived. I love the nose on Gewurz. This was great with Lychees and a nice mineral streak. Thick texture. Almost bone dry with just a hint of sweetness. No bitterness on the finish that often mars this grape. Held up well all night long. No signs of being too old. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

Cork's: Great Whites (Maumee, OH): This was either stored improperly or totally fell off a cliff. Pine Sol nose, spicy. Flabby, short, with a slightly bitter back end. Just over the hill.

This is one of my go to bottles for taking to our local Chinese food joined. This time, however, the bottle seemed less than stellar compared to other bottles I've had under similar circumstances. Not sure if I can explain it other than perhaps a bit of age or bottle variation, but seemed a bit meh this time.

This bottling is rapidly declining, which I find surprising. Still has the litchi component but as a whole, the wine is becoming flabby and dull. Drink now.

This is one of the first times I did not get a floral component from a gewurtz. Light straw color. Not overly aromatic but a little bit of pineapple and maybe some lychee and mild herbs. The wine was a tad hot on the palate but balanced by a bit of sweetness. Moderate acidity with a decent length finish. All in all, really nothing special. Have had much better Alsatian gewurtz from other producers.

Lychee and gewürztraminer in the bouquet. The DRY style of this wine itself is fairly light, but it is very rich in tastes and refinement. Altogether not enormously impressive, but certainly a well made wine.

Nice honey, melon and pineapple. Great mouth feel and finish. This is a consistent winner and crowd pleaser. Tonight this was the perfect accompaniment to a Chinese dinner feast with friends. The wine of the night against another Gewurst and a couple Piesporter Riesling Spatlese.

Hit with my vegeterian friends at their dinner. Gyoza, fresh home grown sprouts, spicy sauce, all of it just shined with the flowery bouquet of the wine. Best $16 ever spent on wine.

This one had been chilled for a week in the refrigerator and just didn't seem as nice as the bottle from two weeks ago. It improved a bit when warmed in the glass.

Perfect blend of floral and litchi, light/med mouthfeel. The floral diminished after a while. Only sightly sweet. Good acidity. Awesome with Thai food.

WSET Level 2 Award for Wines and Spirits Course; 3/14/2017-3/15/2017 (The Sapling, SHATEC Enabling Village): clear, deep lemon; clean, pronounced nose of nectarine, figs, fruit jam, orange marmalade; sweet, in fact so sweet it's cloying, hardly tasted any acid or tannins, can't continue further; a wine totally spoilt by the one-dimensional sweetness... poor...

The last bottle - graceful, fading elegance of unctuous Gewürztraminer. Nearly dry, rich, slightly dusty and long. A treat.

Pale in colour and aromatic, lychees and pear, sweet and goes well with the fillet of beef satay. Such a good food wine. Medium finish.
