  • Very dark red. Open 48 hours. Nose is of dark fruit liqueur, vanilla. Satiny, rich dark fruit, and red fruit, menthol. Some alcohol and bright acid. Surprisingly smooth tannin. Long, pure fruit finish.
So what makes this dark, oaky wine excellent and so many of those other dark oaky wines from Priorat or Napa or Central Coast tiresome? I suggest it's balance; good acid, silky tannin, relatively moderate alcohol.

  • Sweetness, tannins, slight earthiness. Left for a day with NO real improvement in softness or complexity of flavour. Needs at least 5 to 10 years more of cellaring. This wine will out live me.

  • Out of the three VS from the 2000's (2005, 2009 and 2010) this is the one I enjoyed the most during the tasting. It was somewhat the most feminine of the three which I preferred. Some said that it reminded them of a Chateauneuf-du-pape. I can see that. But a feminine one.
Charming aromas of cherry, black berry, strawberry, blueberries, tobacco leaf, licorice powder, chocolate. Very complex nose. The palate was incredibly balanced. Tannins were there but not over the top.
Did get better with air. We decanted it for 2 hours. 30 minutes should be minimum. 2 hours ideally.
    Gorgeous wine.

  • Clear deep ruby/garnet; clean medium plus nose of brambleberry, balsamic and tobacco leaf; dry; high acidity; high tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus to pronounced flavour intensity; palate is tarter with addition of dried prunes, leather, garrigue and eucalyptus; long finish; drink now or in 5 years; remains fresh, energetic and lively despite the beautiful tertiary

  • Huge wine with an enormous bouquet. a ton of coconut, American oak, tobacco, ripe cherry whip cream, blueberries, cocoa powder, roses, liquorice, and orange peel. Spanish wine at its apogee.. Kaleidoscopic flavours. As big as it is, this retains its elegance, silky and with firm, dusty tannins. I’m more inclined to give this a decade to be more integrated and developed.

  • Just massive. The new wood remains quite prominent. Lots of vanilla and coconut on the nose. Really dense, concentrated fruit with black and red cherry, showing more fruit with even a little air. I put my nose in and first thought it would be a new world wine, but believe it or not, guessed 05 Valbuena.

  • Coming back after 2 years. I said I’d wait 5 but let’s see. On the nose: Plum, cinnamon currants, espresso, baking spices and violets. On the palate: Plum, dark chocolate, cinnamon, espresso, cassis, violets and baking spices. Plush and long. This is really good now.

  • Inky deep garnet, with fading edges, and fine sediments. Aromas of rich roasted coconut, and fine cedar, and fresh bamboo, as well as dried plums and redcurrant. Mouthwatering acids with nearly completely resolved tannins, whilst with heft and flavour intensity, of dried redcurrant, cranberry, and even slightly prunish, and then brine, coconut, roasted paprika, black pepper, then a hint of dill and fennel. The intensity continued to the backpalate, and then gently taper towards a somewhat medium finish. Extremely complex though. A good enjoyable wine!

  • Vega Sicilia dinner with Pablo Alvarez (Monterey Restaurant, New York): A gorgeous wine. The 2009 truly pops with its bright fruit. All dinner guests remarked how it seemed like a completely different wine compared to the 2002 and 2013 paired alongside it. Much more red fruit than black. Sour red cherries with silky tannins and a long finish with great verve. Vega Sicilia dinner with Pablo Alvarez

  • Beautiful medium ruby colored. In the nose beautiful ripe dark and red berry notes, some nice dried leather and soft vanilla notes. Very elegant palate, not a fat fruit bomb! Dark cherries, some blueberries, fresh green herbs, some dark chocolate, soft licorice and graphite notes. Medium (+) bodied with a refreshing medium acidity. Silky tannins, more modern style. Really beautiful fruit structure - more northern Rhône style than Ribera del Duero. Fantastic complexity and depth. Very long and seductive finish.
Already surprisingly open and very enjoyable right now, but there’s no need to hurry. Drink from now until 2036. It will definitely get even more exciting.
Around 78,000 bottles of this vintage were produced. (IG)

  • The one with Big Reds #3 (The Sail): What a baby this was! Decanted for 2 hours by the time we had this.
Chocolate, asian spices, rose petals, manuka honey and dark cherries. This had balance and poise amidst gobsmacking power. Highly structured yet restraint - I thought this to be a powerful right bank from a great vintage like 05 or 10 where the underlying is probably a great wine but not accessible yet.

  • Leisner jubilćums dinner (Søllerød Kro): Vega Sicilia Unico 2009 (double magnum) vs. Dominus 2010 (bottle) (4. flight):
    - Unico: I always like Unico and thus also this time. 94
    - Dominus: Too rich for me. Aromas of prune and green pepper. 91

  • Soothing vanilla, spices, mocha and a little bit of incense burning in the background show off the American/French oak influences on the nose. As you swirl, the freshness of concentrated red/black fruits start to tickle your nose and provide a complex bouquet you can enjoy for hours.

A thick palate-coating flow of homemade red/black berry syrup with a sprinkle of various spices show off the concentration and depth of this wine. A very long and refreshing mineral-driven finish lifts the end of the experience and removes the heaviness of the palate.

The strength of this wine comes through the most as you pair it with different seasonings. Spicy 'nduja red sauce, buttermilk sauce, tomato sauce and tunis herbs all fit well into the grand structure of this wine.

An elegant yet powerful food wine. I really enjoyed this.

  • Tremendous, effortless and voluptuous. Had a vertical of the Vega-Sicilian 5 from 2012 to 2017. The Unico capped off the night
Winner by far. Rhône style in my mind, garigue, graphite and pencil shavings with black fruit and berries at the front and folded in tannins that were velvety smooth.

  • Really liked this. Although still young already very enjoyable. Smooth, intense, tannins present but rather soft. Lingers on

  • Great bottle. Young with so much life. Decanted for 3 hours and it kept getting better through the night. Dark complex fruit with tons of depth.

  • This is an amazing wine and vintage afaic. It stood up reasonably to a 2009 DRC and a 2006 Lafite (tied for WOTN). And an Angelus whose vintage I forget. This was a private dinner at Vernick in Philadelphia, and the food and wine match was just unreal. AND it’s Amber Heard’s favorite wine apparently. Nichole asked for it because the trial was going on, probably to tease me. I tried to ignore it, lol. Anyway, it’s drinking beautifully, and I can’t wait to taste this year again when it’s a little more on it’s own.

  • I decided to pick up a bottle of Unico from Double P imports not long ago. With no plans on a Friday going into the weekend this proved a perfect opportunity to try this wine for the first time.

PNP into Josephinehutte stems. In the glass this wine provides a kaleidoscope of garnet and ruby coloring. Medium bodied. On the nose this wine transformed several times over. Mostly hints of licorice, tar/asphalt, tobacco, and burgundian/rhone style red fruits. Texture and finish is very unique. Consumed over a 3 hour period.

I feel like we nailed the approach. With a splash decant or extended ox and we would have missed a lot of beautiful development. The three hour mark was great but the show along the way is what made this bottle for me.

This was transformative, reminiscent of the first time I had Chave Hermitage. It's not for everyone but man is this a bucket list wine for anyone that loves exploring wine.

Paired perfectly with the bacon belly toped with truffle honey and blue cheese.

    98+

  • Astonishingly complex with layers of red, black and fresh berries with earthy, leathery notes intermingled. Tannins well integrated. In a good phase.

  • Spain (Home): Complex nose with butter, oak, mint, blueberry, dark fruit, vanilla, licorice, and dark spices. Very concentrated in the mouth. Dark fruit syrup, coffee, and hints of oak. Very long.

  • PNP, short decant at Bibo Madrid
    Great deep berry nose.
A little bit of tannin as it opens, with the vanilla from French Oak
Elegant, complex, and currently the best Unico of the three we tried . ( 2006,1994 )

  • Requires a lot of decanting at this stage, a luxury we did not have.
Still it was a class act even though young and still very powerful ( albeit 14% alc) it’s a wine of contrast. Big yet silky, powerful yet elegant and in a way a very much a wine that Vega Sicilian can only make and many try to imitate. Impressive at this young age but with lots and lots of life ahead and will be into the top of the 90s scale once it ages more. 93-94 for now

  • Opened for 3 hours. Color is deep garnet and very opaque. On the nose: Cassis, vanilla, violets. On the palate: I think it’s a bit closed off at moment but I get Plum, cassis, dark chocolate , espresso and Baking spices. Velvety mouthfeel. It’s way to young to drink but the bones and class are there. I am biased as I am a huge fan of Vega Sicilia Unico and drink maybe a bottle a year when I want a real treat which I wanted today. I have not had one in a while. I have a case and I need to resist for at least 5 years. I think it scores much higher in future maybe 96+.

  • Consistent note to my last tasting note. Oaky, extracted, really not interesting. Easy to find bruisers like this for 50$ in any supermarket.

  • Shared with a friend. PnP. Consumed over a couple of hours. A slightly bumpy ride and the rating is from the peak drinking experience during the evening. It started out slowly, but after some breathing it took off nicely. It sported an almost US- Syrah like quality with dark fruit, cool blueberries, clove spice, hints of pine needle roast and oak related coffee and smoke. High tannin level with beautifully ripened, rounded tannins, a level which was not too high for the wines richness and body. At least when the wine "peaked". As it crept up in temperature I ultimately grew a little tired of it, it is really an intense mouthful and a lot of tannin, and it is not exactly a refreshing, uplifting drinking experience. In total, I don't have the memory of a 95p wine entirely, but I remember thinking 95p at the time, when I enjoyed it the most. I will give the benefit of the doubt

  • Wine Night #2 Commanderie @ GWC!: Red fruits, cherries, cherry skin, cedar and tobacco. This tasted quite disjointed and needs time to develop and for the flavours to integrate. Way too young and needs at least 8 more years IMO. Ties in with my experience so far that Unicos need ~20 years.

  • During a blind tasting dinner, all wines served double blind. Deep ruby. Southern nose of dark fruit, stewed fruit, strawberry, rhum pot. Sweet palate, extracted, alcoholic heat. Hard work to drink this. I really did not like this, like a Barossa bruiser from the Parker era. May be 20 years of bottle age will help here if the wine then does not turn oxidative as overripe wines often do. Confirms once more that I am not a fan at all of Vega Sicilia.

  • Bordal ŕ Carouge (Ducru, Las Cases, Vega, Sassicaia, GPL...)

  • Very focus but tight nose, mint, blueberry, sweet plum, brown sugar, spices and intense herbs. lovely acidity entry entry, fresh and elegant. Very nice flavours intensity but light on its feets. engaging dark chocolate and persistent finish.

  • Big, deep, and concentrated but slightly clumsy at this stage. Fairly soft tannins and decent acidity. Dark raspberry fruit profile, dense palate weight, and subtle floral notes. Some spice and cigar box as well. Minimal overt oakiness. This needs a lot of time to develop complexity but was still very good overall.

  • Gourmandise - really makes you want to eat and drink. The 2009 Unico has such an appealing, inviting nose. Broad, deep, and detailed but subtle nose with raspberry, thyme, and earth. The wine was served a touch cold. I would be inclined to hold these for at least another 3-4 years. 94+

  • Tobacco, cigar, dark fruit, floral notes. Very classy and balanced mouthfeel. Sandalwood and plums. Tannins are fine and very unresolved. Great balance and a very long finish. Impressive and complex already at this early point. 95-96p

  • I was in no way prepared for how much I was going to enjoy the 2009 Unico on this day. My last tasting showed a wine in the thralls of its oak aging and nowhere near ready to communicate. On this day, the bouquet burst from the glass with a dark and earthy persona, as sweet haunting purple floral tones evolved, offset by hints of sour citrus and crushed black cherry. On the palate, layers of weighty silk-like textures washed across the senses, lifted by energizing acidity, as a mix of red, black and blue fruits combined with mineral-infused citrus and slow-mounting fine tannins to create a lasting impression. The finish was long, long, long, lifted by spiced citrus, earthy minerality and inner floral tones. The balance here was remarkable for such a young Unico. I was seriously impressed.

  • The 2009 was deep, dark, and brooding, as a cloak of vanillin spice and oak lifted from the glass, followed by sweet spices, and haunting floral tones. On the palate, I found silky textures on a medium-bodied frame, hosting brisk acidity which lent a savory and zesty edge to the wines intense red berry fruit, with sweet spices and inner florals carrying through from the bouquet. The finish was medium-long, showing shadows of the oak this was aged in, with clenching tannin which was nearly enveloped by lingering red and black fruit. It’s hard to say where the 2009 will end up, and my score may seem very conservative years down the road.
