This wine has improved substantially since my last tasting. I did decant it for three and a half hours and that likely helped. It had a very highly perfumed quality with gorgeous floral and spicy elements. On the palate dark berries, pomegranate, more spice, and quite a lot of tobacco, a very pleasant level of funk with some barnyard elements, wet grass, smoke, dried beef, utterly charming, really plush, and a very voluptuous mouthfeel. Grippy with good volume. The finish was dry, and delightful. This wine had a real sense of substance, purity and quality.
It is starting to show well, and I would love to see what it's going to be like five or six years from now. Outstanding wine for a vintage which was not excellent.

As always this is so tasty. Nice nose with black berries, red fruit and garrique. Rich and intense, but best on the almost brooding finish thats peppery, with a lot of structure and tannins, but also sweet fruit.

I bought this CDP on auction given reputation of producer and for the vintage as a good year.
Nice looking bottle, looks very "French" - whatever that means. The wine pours as deep red/purple and glass swirls leave medium length legs on the glass -- says 14% alcohol. Looks very inviting in the glass
The nose is undeniable. It has big aroma and presents complex to me. To me it seems like mixed red and black fruits but has more complexity than that. I want to say some baking spice and/or pepper. Maybe like spiced cherries is the way to describe it best. Definitely a welcome sense of earthiness too. Hard to decipher as it is really multi-dimensional as would hope for in a CDP blend of 13 varietals.
Medium acid on the tongue from the initial sip, tannins are relatively high with sustained dryness and lingering on the tongue. The tasting profile is equally complex as the nose. The taste supports the nose, some deep red fruit but quickly resolves to more herbal and earthy tones. I read one review that said bay leaf which I think is directionally correct. The dryness of the wine takes over quickly. The after taste is driven by a return of fruit briefly and then just lingers enjoyably. I sense a little heat (alcohol) which leads me to either aging this a bit more or decanting longer it before tasting.
This is one of best CDP I have had, admittedly many more to taste, but I think this is a solid representation of the signature appellation in the southern rhone valley that is CDP.
Lastly, I tasted this side by side with a northern rhone Cote-Rotie and the distinct difference of the Syrah in the Cote-Rotie vs the Grenache led CDP was certainly apparent.
Oh this would be wonderful with a nice meat, starch and vegetable dinner. I will taste in that context next time.
Wow, lots of aroma here with dark fruit and earthy elements. Not too sweet or rich at all, like so many other CdP these days with global warming. The palate is well judged, finds the equilibrium of a southern wine with whole cluster fermentation adding lightness and freshness. Still a lot of tannins to shed through, it reminds me of the 2010 when it was young. Drink not before 2028.

Deep ruby. Brett-free aromas of black olive, potpourri, garrigue, and dark fruit. Medium to full bodied with a touch of alcohol sticking out. Deeply flavored, rich, savory, and brooding with excellent acidity, some spice, and moderately grippy back end tannins. The fruit is ripe dark red in character, and it has very good savory qualities and a firm soil base. A hearty mouthful for a cool, rainy evening, but with its structure and strong Mourvèdre component, this should last for another 10-15 years.

Like others have said, intense and focused with pine needles, pine tar, incense, ripe red cranberries, finely grained spices on the nose. The palate is intense, and tightly wound without feeling closed off or oppressive. Nice core of ripe red berries frames by clove and pepper. Definitely big but not too broad, it’s not over the top.
Excellent, I would leave to age further, though it is very good now.

Solid vintage, starting to drink nicely, albeit very, very early, still quite firm and toothsome. That said, sometimes you want something a little more chewy...
Gentle notes of pine needle and white pepper dance in the glass. The palate features tart cranberry and bitter chocolate notes framed around the usual grilled plum and garrigue. Right now this is more a steak wine, really featuring the structure, peppery and a little prickly. Delicious.

This just makes me happy. Broad nose with garrique, herbs and black fruit. Palate is powerful and juicy with lovely sweet fruit and a long finish where you feel the structure, but also the sweet fruit. I see people think you should decant or hold, so our preferences are different. This is my fifth bottle and for me its pop, pour and go. I like a Pegau on the wild side and this vintage delivers that.

This is immediately excellent and more mature than in april. Nose first with earth and a lot of herbs, later more shy, but with sweet red fruit.
Palate with black fruit and a nice dose of pepper. It's fresh and dense with exiting sweet fruit, that makes it complex with the pepper and the nice structure. A fine medium finish, but best on the dense sweet fruit. This is so fresh. I love Pégau and for me, this is the right time for this vintage.

80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre and 10% other varieties. Dark red, Purple body. Double decanted. Meaty, earthy, herbs, pepper and a slight touch of black fruits on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and powerful. High acidity. Tannins are present but well integrated. Even after double decanting it needs at least 3 more hours to breathe. Medium, spicy finish.

Second note (first note Jan 8, 2021 still holds true). PnP in 2022 it's so disjointed and anemic, but opening 6-8 hours ahead is enough to drink today. Comes together beautifully, more of a classic CdP profile than I can recall from Pegau this decade. Doesn't yet have the complexity of 4-5+ yrs cellaring but this is doing well in its youth. Pegau Rsv 2015 and 2016 have a long ways to go by comparison. 92-93
Pop and pour Nose has lots of fruit, open Good tannin and acidity on the palate Grenache is prominent, with bright and classic juicyness Syrah and Mourvedre give it character and longevity Delicious now Life is short - don’t wait too long to enjoy this

PnP and brooding, with blackberry, black currant, tar, garrigue, and barnyard coalescing throughout. Lively acidity brings freshness, and the structure is outstandng. Glimpses of greatness now that portend even better drinking the next 10+ years.

The wine has really classic old world CDP character. It’s dark and brooding and filled with garrigue. However it is too young and is disjointed and lacks integration. I’ll try it again in 2025.

Even though quite young, this is even at this age already a very good CdP. Open decant for two hours. The typical Grenache/Syrah darkish crimson color. Dark fruit and spices in the nose. Palate is complex yet elegant and full bodied. Long finish. This can only be better in the years to come., which is good because I have more in the cellar. 92 points now with potential for 94.

Lovely wine with a softer more approachable style that builds with time in the glass. More fruit forward than the 2015 or 2016 vintages but still with some the the Pegau funk.

Not the most expressive nose, but still elegant with herbs and kirsch. Black fruit and again kirsch ending in a long beautiful and dry finish. The finish is a little tough after some time, but it really shines with food. Really good balance and just lovely.

Nice nose with garrigue, pepper and black fruit. The palate is medium to full-bodied with sweet fruit, a hint of kirsch and a perfect balance ending in a long fresh finish with plenty of tannins. For me this is gorgeous today and typically for Pégau . I understand that many find it to young and it is young, so it might reflect our different preferences. But I have several times experiended that Pégau in the first years can be open and 2 monts later closed and unyielding. I want to buy more of this.

First day was a bit disappointing, nose was still a bit muted for a Pegau, wine was disjointed and almost watery half way though. Not the first time I’ve run into this with young Pegau, the 2011 was very watery and light almost Pinot like young but not in a good way and now it is drinking beautifully albeit not up to par with the great Pegau vintages. I digress, on day two this had fleshed out considerably and I remember thinking “this is huge actually”, what a change from 26hrs prior. That being said it seemed to actually tighten up and add considerable grip even though the fruit was also blossoming, sounds counterintuitive but that’s what happened. Notes of tar and iodine and anise seed and turpentine were prevelent with some garrique. Fast forward several hours of some slow ox coaxing and this finally started rounding into balance. Last sip was the best. Still hadn’t added all the tertiary flavors we love but I suppose those require good old fashioned bottle age. Lesson, this needs time. In a couple years I predict you’ll still have a tight mess but in 5-10 this should come around nicely and at 10 plus is when it will really start to shine. Hold my friends.
Dark red, some purple; fruity nose, black cherries; light attack, lots of fruit, nice depth, quite dry tannins with a lightly mouth-plucking finish; holds good potential, but quite (too) young right now, unless you are going for the fresh lightly tannic expression

My friend says “old church pew” about 50% of euro wines, but about Pegau he would be right.
And it’s potpourri. Not garrigue. Potpourri. The dried character is different. It’s buried under a layer of dirt that may or may not have had Grandma’s baking spice spilled on it.
There are fruits of every color.
This is a world-class wine. There is no simpler way to sum it up.
And this is a note from a super-young bottle, with under an hour of air. Buy up, drink up, enjoy.

Initially a bit closed, and opened up after an hour of decanting. Black currant, black pepper, violet, dried bay leaf, long finish of firm tannins, red berries, and licorice. Would love to see how this turns out with a few years of cellaring, all the stuffing is there, just needs a little more time. Would definitely buy more to hold.

Crushable fruit-driven Chateauneuf-du-Pape, with light tannins, that is drinking well and highly enjoyable now. 80% grenache, 6% syrah, 4% mourvedre & 10% mixed other varietals, dark color, but neither over-extracted on the palate or high alcohol. Did not decant. Great to taste in its youthful period.
Lovely and inviting nose on the PnP; a little bit of that brett on the nose I find delightful, but seems to blow off after not long; dark roasted espresso, polished leather, a field of wild stuff growing. On the palate I get lots of acidity, some fresh sweet purple fruit and dark berries showing really good purity and concentration. Grippy on the cheeks, but should pair up nicely with this Ribeye on tonight's menu. Very nice.

As QPR goes, this is pretty outstanding. I think I paid $45 for this very well crafted gem. Into the decanter and tasted over an hour or two.
Rather deep extraction for a 17. This has notes of blackberry jam and garrigue, but as Pegau goes, a very clean vintage. Coiled and compact on the palate with some structure from the skins, but no discernible oak to my palate. Grippy acids round out the package well.
I suspect this has very good aging potential and is certainly among my top buys of last year.

A lovely Pegau that seems a bit “cleaner” with respect to Brett that older vintages had, although I don’t mind a touch in my wines. That being said I enjoy CdP wines because they’re great young, middle aged and then can still charm as senior citizens, like a few of us this forum. Expressive nose with lilac notes and boysenberry. Smooth tannins even young and a pleasant finish. Matched perfectly with a homemade Shepherds Pie on a bitter cold January evening

Full bodied, rustic styling. Subdued nose today, but clear meat, leather, and spiced red fruit. Palate is classic Pegau, towards more rustic vintages ('12, '14) rather than fruitier ('15, '16). Stewed fruit and berries, char, conifer forest and needles, bloody meat, earth, cacao. Tannins are drying through the long finish, needs some time to integrate and unfold. Is and will be a brilliant Pegau for decades. 92-93

Excellent young Pegau. Stick your nose in the glass and there is no other wine this could be. Iron, old church pew, Christmas spice, meat and herbs and a hint of funk. That’s a Pegau. Full and ripe, fresh with no roasted or baked element. Ripe red fruits, lively acidity and a concentrated long finish. Great stuff.
Beautifully coloured; on the nose there are notes of tobacco, fennel seed, and - wait for it - a hint of deep fried banana; on the palette, bold with notes of cassis and smoke with a peppery finish. Very savory.

This is the youngest wine that I have ever drunk from this Domaine; in fact, it might be, after only three years from its vintage, the youngest top quality wine that I have ever drunk. It shouldn't be allowed, but there was no one to stop me. In my defence, all I can say is that it was an experiment. What are wines of this stature like when young?
The answer (in this case) is dense, almost black in colour; the nose is closed, with dark fruit and sightly dark industrial fluid overtones, but not unpleasant; but in the mouth, it is already there in terms of depth and texture, with smouldering Grenache, slightly one dimensional but nonetheless very satisfying.
This was an educational experience, and like most good forms of education you must push the box, attempt to see both what is there and what might be in the future. This is a very fine wine that will become finer with time.

First encounter. A juvenile that is obviously tannic, but a sharp contrast to the more common sweet and hot southern rhone style. Lots of fruit and lift, but it is a serious dense package. If you enjoy your right bank Bordeaux young, you will like this wine. Perfect pairing with beef short ribs.

I enjoyed this, though not as much as what I had expected given the vintage hype. Generous nose of black and dark red berries, licorice, star anise spice, pretty smooth and well integrated palate, not as obtrusive tannins as one might expect from a young wine like this, medium acidity and med/med plus length

Ether, pen ink, and a note of plum on the nose. On the palate, rich red and black berries with notes of black pepper, anise, and earthy spice on the long finish, with strong tannins and strong acidity. This is an excellent young Chateauneuf with plenty of upside, although it will probably close down for a few years. It was an excellent value at just over $50.

A bit cold with food quite enjoyable. Warmer, after dinner too heavy. Red and blue berries, manure, nailpolish, warm, almost burnt herbs. Iron and earth. Medium to low acidity, some tannins. Gets bitter towards the finish. A bit below expectations. I guess I’ve lost the taste for southern Rhône.

After going long on the 2016 vintage I only swooped up a couple bottles of the 2017 and this is my very first experience with the vintage. The Spring of 2017 presented all sorts of problems for Grenache vines in large parts of the Southern Rhône. A cold and wet May resulted in shatter which lead to yields that were anywhere between 30-60% less than normal. However, from June until harvest, the weather was beautifully suited for grapes; warm and dry. From my humble perspective, the results for Pegaü were nothing short of fantastic! After a few hours in the decanter, this was absolutely slaying the game with head spinning aromas of the purest dark bramble fruit, star anise, sandalwood and “Himalayan Spice” incense. On the palate, this was a concentrated beast. Dark and red brambles, seeds and all, with black licorice, black pepper and some bacon fat. Huge tannin and fantastic acid. Long finish that’s lasting for minutes and killer pairing with rack of lamb. I find this to be a tremendous follow up to the 2016 and worthy of any high praise it receives. Probably should have bought more...maybe I can still snag some. The 2017 vintage ended up as a blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% mix of the other 13 approved grapes. As a side note, no “Cuvee da Capo” was made in 2017.
Deep in color, the wine offers one of the most concentrated sensations of the vintage. Here, you find a dark, spicy, ripe, sweet, fleshy, peppery intense wine that develops and expands on the palate. Long, fresh and juicy, the wine is going to require time before it is ready for drinking. . The wine is a blend of close to 80% Grenache along with various other AOC allowed grape varieties.

Good tannin and acidity on the palate

Syrah and Mourvedre give it character and longevity

Even though quite young, this is even at this age already a very good CdP. Open decant for two hours. The typical Grenache/Syrah darkish crimson color. Dark fruit and spices in the nose. Palate is complex yet elegant and full bodied. Long finish. This can only be better in the years to come., which is good because I have more in the cellar. 92 points now with potential for 94.
