  • Surprisingly fresh and fruit. No mean greenies or stemmy notes from the vintage. Was in a great drinking window and enjoyed!

  • I love this vintage and producer. This wine was a lovely experience to consume. A vintage like this is not likely to ever occur.

  • Dark brick red. Aromas of forest floor, mushrooms, cherries and pomegranate. Perfumed. Beautiful nose. Seamless mouthfeel, cool and tight fruit, fine acidity, worn tannins, medium concentration, good length. A surprisingly fresh and lively village from a supposedly difficult vintage. Drink now.

  • Lovely burgundy, nice touch of undergrowth and smooth a silk.

  • Wonderful aged Burgundy. This “off” vintage is really hitting its stride and I find better than many other better vintages. Nuanced and a pleasure to drink.

  • Mushroom, mineral, beef. Fantastic nose. Not going to improve from here, just on the edge of probably a slow decline. Really enjoyable with roast chicken.

  • BYOB Bordeaux/Burgundy flights (Local wine club): Initially cabbage and cooked fruit. Got a lot better with air showing coffee, strawberry, rubber (?) i.e. not without a certain amount of complexity. Good acidity levels and fruit, but a bit tired. In a lot better place than my previous bottles, but drink up! One more to go...90-91p.

  • cloudy brick red appearance, explodes on the nose with dried orange peel, mushroom and dried red fruit, saturated with silky, fleshy fruit, bright red berries, mineral, stone and dark cherry hints, refreshing, vibrant quality, plenty of upside, yet there is a maturity about it that indicates a nice drinking point

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Alpharetta, GA): Cloudy dull maroon, orange in rim; great nose, leather, orange, sour cherry, cranberry, spice, mulled plums, beef bouillon, great mineral underneath, no green; very nice on the palate as well, sour fruit, nice sappiness, cooked cherry though still good tension, saliva inducing finish; delicious; tied for WOTN.

  • I was at the home of a big-time Burugndy collector last Friday night and for the second time in a week heard a respected voice say that '04's are drinking well right now, with less risk of green-meanies than previously feared. So it seemed like a good time to venture back into the stew with a trusted favorite like Burguet.

I opened it around 5PM and began drinking immediately. The color was a largely transparent pale red with noticeable browning at the rim. Nose airy, elegant, pure, and layered: dark red fruits, iron, earth, beef bouillon-no suggestion of herbaceousness or green notes.

Lovely structure in the mouth, not a lot of depth but not lightweight at all, rounding in perfectly integrated tannins. Impressions of red fruits, earth, and an iron-infused minerality, with a slightly tart finish.

I got no greenness at all, and would have rated it higher other than it seemed the fruit was a trifle short overall. But who really cares? It's delicious right now and well=stored, for another 3-5.

Revision after posting: this is my third or fourth note on the wine and true to my philosophy and unreliable memory, I not only didn't look back first, I had no idea what I previously said. It appears that one out of four bottles was off. Loved the others. Bottle variation: my never to be written MW dissertation.

  • This one is getting better and gives away spicy fruit, mostly red. The earthy notes that were there 2-3 years ago have receded and give way to a more nuanced nose. Very supple and soft taste with the tannins resolved and more than decent fruit towards redcurrants and with a relatively high acidity. Finish is a bit acidic and a touch warm. Overall this has shown a nice development but maybe not one to save for much longer.

  • Red and dark fruits on the palate with a savory finish. Very good 2004 that is starting to mature. Earth, fruit, and mushroom on the nose. Very balanced with good acidity. Really enjoyed this 2004.

  • Pale/medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose is attractive, open, showing ripe red and black berry fruit, game, liquorice. Quite complex, mature, no green. Medium bodied, sweet, gamey red and black berry fruit, bright, vibrant acidity, touch of meatiness, good length, savoury, gamey finish with some earth notes and a touch of dusty tannin. Excellent though, especially in the context of the vintage. Drink now and over next 3-5 yrs.

  • Definitely liked my last bottle 1.5 years ago better. This shows more vegetal - in a cab franc way rather than in an unpleasant 2004 way. Still I found the wine to be somewhat monotone, if well balanced and fresh. Doesn't feel like it is one that will get better - based on this bottle would drink this in the next 3-5 years.

  • Bright dark mineral-laden floral violet red-purple Gevrey fruit. Long, soft, dense, refined, and delicate. This is a simply remarkable '04, besting most if not all of the '04 Grand Crus that I've sampled over the years. Burgalicious.

  • Fascinating article read recently by under-the-radar, consumer-friendly, extremely modest Burgundy authority Bill Nanson on 2011 vintage and the specter of pyrazines. If I may paraphrase, and all errors are mine, if you experienced the green meanies widespread in 2004, you are doomed to relive them any time a subsequent vintage has even a whisper of the same problem-to whit, a nasty and penetrating herbaceousness that can completely overwhelm drinking pleasure. In any event, Dr. Nanson has observed some of the same characteristics in 2011, so now I am on the lookout.

But let's not forget we're talking about an '04 here, right? I honestly don't think I smell pyrazines in the nose, but on the other hand, the fruit is a little clipped, and it leaves a somewhat chemical impression if you really dip your beak into it. I'm all about vintage variation vs. manufactured consistency, but this seems to lack a certain je ne sais quoi. On the palate some fruit emerges, but it's quickly brushed aside by harsh and brutish flavors that render it somewhat unattractive. This doesn't strike me as a wine that is in transition to a more appealing state: it just seems harsh, and the sensation of a mouth-coating greenness tends to increase as you progress through the bottle.

Net net, no rating. I have one more bottle I will sit on for a few years to see if something resolves, but I'm not optimistic. Everything can't be '05 or '10 but it can be better than this.

Revision after posting: LOL. I have two prior notes on this wine that are completely different! WTF? Either I've changed or the wine has or both...makes it hard to regard me as a reliable reference on this one.

  • This is a very good 2004 with bright acids that really needs food to shine today. Better on the second night. Beets, tomato juice, black cherry on the palate with velvety texture. Nice length. Reminds me a lot of a typical '96, where the acids needed 15+ years to settle down.

  • Bright red and dark Gevrey fruit, mineral streak, great mouthfeel, excellent balance, long midpalate, finishes with soft, sweet tannins. Very Gevrey. Drinking simply beautifully -- in a wonderful place. One to seek out at auction.

  • This is a good wine that is drinking well from now on. Earth and red berries on the nose. After 12h the ripeness and more nuances emerge. The fruit and minerality is there with a firm acidity and a good grip. Medium to long slightly dry finish. Quite like this one, great with the right food! 89-91p

  • Dark fruited, lightly velvety, thickening up with air to a moderately dense velvet. There is a slight touch of something slightly bitter/green, so presumably ladybird. Good, but the slight edge takes a little gloss off of it. ***

  • Not worth the price.

  • Medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Striking ripe red fruited nose, alluring, touches of game and earth. Medium/full on the palate, mouth-filling sweet red cherry and strawberry fruit, notes of game and earth, surprisingly generous and rich (given the vintage) and offset by vibrant, tangy acidity which carries through to a very good length finish which shows some nice grip but is in no way harsh or even firm. This is truly excellent and with none of the dreaded vintage character it is currently drinking better than both the 01 and the 02.

  • Ripe, modern in style. Pleasant to start the evening with, but would be drinking now to enjoy the fruit. B+

  • Nicely balanced and concentrated burgundy with berries and spices on the palate. Really blossoms after 2-3 hours. Must buy more!

  • Sophisticated flavours here- lovely fruit and the tannins have unwound beautifully - a real kiss of a wine - this is why I come back to Pinot in general and Burgundy in particular

  • Classic Gev chassis with turbo engine of black and red fruit. Cherries, black cap berries, in the lofty mid-palate with a vein of minerality. Good acidity and tannins kept a soft lean line tethering the seductive fruit wave. Beautiful integration of fresh earth, ripe cherries, small ripe alpine strawberries from mid-palate to the lustrous finish.

  • D-fense, D-fense! No, I'm not talking about the Giants defensive line, which I'd be happy to give a 90+ rating following last week's Eagles game. I'm talking about how my brother and me have to formulate various strategies for playing prevent defense to keep our own hands off our '05's. I keep reading put downs of '04, but for the main I find them quite enjoyable, with good punch and reasonable transparency. No exception here, with ripe crunchy pinot fruit, evident sous bois, good weight and spicy Gevrey-ness. I have no problem deferring even greater pleasure from '05's to come in the company of stuff like this, which my savvy brother seems to pluck from auctions at ridiculous prices. Ready to drink now but I find no reason to rush.

  • Real nice juice. Red and black fruits, very Gevrey in character. Power without weight. Compared to other bottles consumed, time has given this wine much more focus and precision. Drinking nicely now and will likely continue to evolve. This guy can make wine.

  • Really ran circles around the Rousseau GC AC. Really good, balanced wine...The problem was the fruit-forwardness of the wine -- almost new world in presentation...but without the oak, extraction, manipulation, etc...I found it quite good overall for what it was and for the vintage. Not affected at all my the green of the vintage. On day 2 (24 hours room temp), the wine showed a lot of secondary...some aromas that I'd normally associate with wood (not sure whether it had any new oak or not?)...and a tart, acidic, fruity after-taste that is just ever so slightly hot (13% bottle)...Palate still comes across very complex. Overall impressive showing for this wine, yet I'm not sure I dig the style.

  • Smells nice, some barnyard, some apple, A hint of sweetness. Tastes like red fruits. Still some tannins, nicely balanced. Could improve some more in the cellar, but a decent wine.

  • Burguet has been one of "mes favorites" for quite a while, a producer of honest, solid, Gevrey who seldom disappoints even in uneven years. The '04 vintage has a lot to recommend it, and as long as you're willing to investigate the dark shadows cast by the towering '05's, you can find excellent wines that one might hesitatingly describe as "bargains," and which can give pleasure long before the '05's awaken from prolonged hibernation.

Here we have a dark ruby but hardly opaque color. The nose, though not quite explosive, is lively and expressive right off the pour, with cherries and other ripe red fruits, minerals, and earth. Very Gevrey, as they say. Medium bodied with a hint of sweetness in the mid-palate that moves into a taut acid-laden finish. This is still young, but it's got nice punch and should be significantly better in 3-5 years. However, I'll be consuming as much as I can tonight, and doubt you will go wrong in the interim.

  • Needed a Burg, so I cracked this one in the hope it might be ready. Well, it wasn't, although it was some good stuff. Dark fruited, structured, this needs some more years in the bottle.

  • You be the Judge - Score your own Wines (Farpointe Cellar): A delicious nose of dirt, plum, and cherry. The palate was very earthy, with cherry, raspberry, and a touch of vanilla. The finish was very good.

  • This started out a little thin but really put on weight after an hour or so in the glass. The nose showed great fruit character, lots of earthy mineral notes, a hint of oak and some spiciness. The palate was extremely complex showing light and dark fruits, some smoke with a lovely spicy character. The finish was full and long. No green streak in this wine, although I did get a note of green peppercorn so if you consider that a green streak...

  • Nice fruity nose in a light, elegant wine; fun though lighter than some of our favorites.
