  • Two bottles tasted text to eachother one opened three days in advance and one freshly decanted. The difference is noticeable and almost remarkable. This is still a young wine, but after three days open it is really lovely.

  • The '16 Via Nuova is a very well-made wine, but the style is clearly not my preference. As such, I find it a bit hard to rate, but I rated it for my enjoyment level.

On the nose, I found expressive aromatics of dark red to black cherry, sweet spices, dark chocolate, dark floral tones, lavender, and fresh herbs. It is a very dark, spicy expression, with quite a bit of influence from the chocolate and spice tones, I assume a consequence of the wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full in body, quite intense at this stage, but with fine grained tannins and a sense of creaminess that makes it drinkable despite technically being highly tannic. I found dark red cherry fruits, black floral tones, dark chocolate, and sweet baking spices on the palate.

While technically this wine was very good, at least in this showing, I found the expression a bit muddled and a bit too dark and spicy for my tastes in Nebbiolo. I'd be interested in trying this wine with more age. I actually found more enjoyment in the '18 Mosconi from Chiara Boschis at La Festa this year, finding that wine a bit more classic than this '16 Via Nuova.

  • Very good

  • After 3 bottles over two years with very similar notes ("overpowering small of dried rose petals") two of which from the cellar, this was *completely* different. Showing *super* oaky, with a wall of vanillin barrique flavour, this was unrecognisable from previous bottles. Judgement reserved but this showing was a huge step down from what I had before

  • Tried a second time. This time at restaurant (Le Torri in Castiglione Falletto) alongside ravioli del plin al sugo dei 3 arrosti e guancia di maiale al nebbiolo. Great match!

  • It still smells a bit like a posh women’s Bathroom from the 80s: lashings of pot-pourri dominate the nose. 3rd bottle with constant results over multiple years. Lovely wine but a bit quirky

  • The best Via Nuova ever tried and for sure much much better than 2017. In very good Barolo in a great vintage

  • 92p today with a huge upside a good bit into the future
Tastes expensive but doesn't live up to its hefty price tag. I do not understand why so many write on CT that it is accessible, wonderful and ready to plop. *pft*
This is a young wine that still lives on its primary fruit. This makes it rather uninteresting for our taste buds. That then the +++ tannins (the good type, not barbed wire model) gives the wine a dried short finish. This doesn't add to any reason to uncork this now.
However, the wine has lots of fine qualities that we could chisel out after about 3 hours of aeration:
Violets, raspberries, cherries, forest walk and good with rosehips. And a beautiful architecture, however heavily guarded today by the Tannic and Fruit Beasts!

Next btl faaar away into the future.

    Christmas Dinner at Trattoria Pecorella.

  • 100% Nebbiolo, 14.5% ABV. Violet, cedarwood, various spices, strawberry. Classic Nebbiolo, but having modern style also. Already approachable. Sweat and mellow. I love it mostly.

  • Dried coconut and vanillin aromatics, the new barrique use to the fore. Midbodied with dried apricots, earthy and layered with bold tannins, with time there's an intriguing menthol seam running through the midpalate. Really classy, internationally-styled.

  • This is super young but absolutely on fire. It's usually my favorite from Chiara and in this great vintage, it shows the aromatic complexity of blending different vineyards. Macerated dark red cherries, but also fresh red berries,.there are rose petals, crushed violets, lavender, sweet spices, some tar, cedar wood, but also a touch of fresh notes like orange zest and some herbal notes/menthol. It's medium-full bodied, with relatively high but perfect tannin that provides structure, but leaves an incredibly silky mouthfeel. High acidity providing energy and freshness. Superbly long finish with layer over layer of complexity and sheer class. One of the very best (if not the best) vintages of Via Nuova. My rating might still be conservative, as the wine is still young but just so incredibly balanced and built to age. Wow. (97+)

  • A stunning, beautiful perfume emerges from the glass of Chiara Boschis' 2016 Barolo Via Nuova with notes of macerated sweet cherry, rose, and cedar. Regal but grippy tannins frame a wine of elegance and seeming weightlessness with flavors of cherry and spice that offer very good length and a bit of drying tannin. Very good! Drink starting 2026.

  • Bright berry, tar, deep pitched earth, floral, very tightly coiled, complexity is still evident, big body, large flavor impact. I don't find overly oaked like other notes. Very fine and hopefully great with time. Surprising amount of sediment already.

  • First time with a Barolo from Chiara Boschis. I've tried a few bottles of the LN 2016 and really liked it. The Via Nuova has grapes from seven vineyards; Terlo, Liste, Gabutti, Baudana, Ravera di Monforte, Paiagallo and Mosconi. Fermented and macerated for two weeks, aged for 24 months on French oak. (as I understand it 1/3 new) Anyway, modern style for sure.
Sweet fruit, macerated dark sweet cherries dominates. Raspberries. Dark rose petals, menthol, rosehip, liquorice, gentle tar, light roasted coffee beans, worn leather and hazelnut. Everything covered in a velvety soft layer of oak. You definitely sense the new oak, powerful yet with a sophisticated side to it. Will need a lot of time to integrate though.
Powerful tannins, proper grip and of high quality. Slightly drying and quite feisty at this stage. Good acidity also, high pitched and full of energy. The structural background for aging is definitely there.
Rosehip, raspberries, spice, sandalwood, nuts. Sweet fruit and new oak.
Long aftertaste. A broad shouldered Barolo, opened and perfumed but unbalanced at this early stage imo. The oak dominates and covers a lot of the promising material underneath. Not even close to 100 points at the moment imo but it sure oozes potential, but for that you'll have to wait at least 15 years. Bury deep and consider yourself lucky to have this in your cellar.

  • It’s not easy to try young barolos and know it’s a 100 point wine according to mr galloni. Maybe it will be one day but today it’s just magic with a little to much tanins for my taste. Looking forward to revisit this wine in 5 years again
The Mosconi I are more smashing right now in my opinion. Might change with age

  • On the nose, the oak is noticeable and takes you vaguely toward a Pomerol or a very toned down version of a top Ribera del Duero (gasp). Besides a bit of oak spice, there’s plummy fruit on the nose — but, really, few of the Nebbiolo superlatives are to be found here. I would not have guessed this to be Barolo on the nose. Palate is a bit of a paradox — really confit red plum and dark cherry fruit flavors that are at the same time very fresh and crunchy. Light and at the same time quite concentrated. Tannins ultimately clamp down on the longish finish. Quite open for business. Very, very tasty. This girl might be even more beautiful without the make-up...

  • Opened in the bottle for 5 plus hours. Dark coloration and texturally dense (by Piedmont standards). Tannins are smooth but the palate remains acidic with real potential buried. Still it’s open enough for now to sip with ripe dark fruit, truffle, fresh espresso grounds, rose and milk chocolate coming out. Nonetheless it remains clipped and sharp but with room to improve in 5-10 years. Nice but not perfect.

  • Complex aromatics of cedar, red fruits, rose petal and spice. The palate is deep and penetrating but very tight. It has a glossy feel and perfectly ripe tannins. It is extremely long and needs cellar time.

  • Wonderful "up on you face" without being aggressive or defiant, this just annoys and delights you! Delicious concentrated raspberry fruit, balamico, hints of graphite, mushrooms and truffles. Beautiful touch that seduces and almost knocks you into the dust. But here too - not in a violent way, but in this soft and charming way. Beautiful red / purple fruit against darker cherries, pretty perfume tone, balsamic vinegar and some dried orange fruit at the end. Lovely acidity and tannin structure. Great wine with a big upside. 95 points.

  • I can't rate this wine now as it is a shape shifter at this point. Drank over two days, but just so hard to see where this wine is going to end up. Not sure how it is possible for the critics to rate this now as even after two days was hard to distinguish the fruit through the tannins here.

  • An Overview of Chiara Boschis (Zoom!): Mixture of six crus with different expositions and soils. Super balanced and elegant. Menthol, lavender, cedar, red fruit; laid-back but plenty of stuffing too. Violets and dark fruits on the finish. Tannins coat the mouth but are super fine. Feels slightly reserved at this stage, but glad to have bought a case.

  • Dégusté à la cave. Nez encore fermé, moins expressif que Cannubi, plus tannique et plus dur en bouche, attendre impérativement, moins élégant que Cannubi, moins complexe que Mosconi, une très très belle série.

  • Pretty flippin good! A bit tight yesterday, it is singing loudly today. A broad swath of red, blue and black fuits is intense and intoxicating. Hints of sweet orange and mushrooms contrast each other beautifully. Tons of floral depth from roses to lavender. Pine forest, licorice and marzipan too. This is very complex, leaving the nose searching and bewildered. Utterly seamless on the palate. Very, very long. This coats every corner of the palate. Its tannic clout is substantial without ever being demanding. It just caresses in effortless velvety tones. Yikes! I think I might guess grand cru Burgundy if I encountered this blind today. It will last for a very long time. I'm kinda surprised how much this improved over 24 hours. That doesn't mean you shouldn't sit on it for a decade or two. I could imagine it might shut down... so maybe try one soon if you're very inclined to see what it's all about, but sensible Nebbiolophiles who have faith in their own longevity should probably wait.
