  • -- decanted 60 minutes before initial taste --
    -- tasted non-blind over a few hours --

NOSE: reserved; red-fruited; hints of new plastic and general sweetness; very light touch of funk; very light vegetal/sewage note after a couple hours open --- very light.

BODY: garnet color of medium to medium-deep depth; slight bricking at the edges; medium-light to medium bodied.

TASTE: red-fruited; zesty; strong earthy component --- NSG?; simultaneously fruity and rustic; good acidity; in a nice place right now, and much better than my previous bottle; moderate concentration of fruit; alc. not noticeable; not complex; perhaps a touch heavy for a Pinot (or muddled); drink now and over the next 3 – 5 years.

  • Pretty, mid weight wine, at perfect drinking point. Decent length, round, still some red fruit. Likely at peak

  • PNP. Cork intact and wet 1/4 way up. Color garnet. Nose is classic ageing burgundy. Mostly sous bois and some iodine w spices. Swishing shows mostly acid structure with some fine tannins bringing up the rear - borders on astringent. Sipping however allows the density of this to balance the structure and the fruit continues on the med length polished finish. This is very nice tonight.

The village wines from 05 seem ready to go but this will undoubtedly hold or even improve some in my opinion.

  • -- popped and poured --

This was acceptable, given its age and pedigree. It’s best years are behind it, as it’s getting fairly dried-out now. Savory, light, red-fruited, and easy-to-drink. Past peak. Drink Now.

  • Drinking very well. Dark fruits aromas with dusty soil tones overlaid. Squarely medium weight and still young on the palate, with fruit concentration yet to resolve and a core of acidity to keep things lively. This is, in my experience, one of the very best basic Bourgognes, and in such a fine vintage, this drinks better than more than a few village bottlings I've opened in the past. Try one now, but this will likely improve yet.

  • Beautifully fresh and youthful. Clean and vibrant tasting. A gorgeous wine.

  • The first bottle of this that I had in maybe 2009 was by far the tightest basic Bourgogne I've ever had, so I waited until now to open my second bottle. It's still really young and vigorous, though slightly rounder and not quite as tannic as I remember that first bottle to be. In a really good spot when matched appropriately, and I'd buy more if it were still available.

  • Still shut down/closed in at age 8 for basic Bourgogne is a surprise, but this one is. There's density there, but not expressivness. Needs time.

  • Medium ruby core, medium pale garnet rim. Nose is moderately intense but quite aromatic, with slightly smoky plum and black cherry, notes of earth. Palate is medium/full bodied, with plum, black cherry, spice, notes of earth, nice fresh acidity, slightly firm tannins and a note of liquorice on the medium length finish. Very good, drinking well now, not so sure it's for the long term though.

  • It's been nearly 5 years since I last tasted this wine. It has barely budged. There's still plenty of deep black cherry fruit with hits of more tart berries along for the ride. Tannin structure has not really changed since release. I think I will check back in after another 3-4 years or so.

  • Not nearly as great as the last bottle, but still pretty good. Very much a baby nuits.

  • Against my better judgement took this out of my wine cooler and opened last night as I was anxious to try one of the 2005s. As per previous reviews this is a wine that is too young to drink now. I am not a professional taster at all but after 1 and half hours decanted the wine was still closed and remained so to the end. Muted fruit on then nose and also the palette, did not open up at al so I have a hard time describing it other than dry finish but could feel the fruit in the wine, just not taste itl. I can tell it will be a very good wine in a couple more years or longer but as with most 2005 quality Bourgogne they are too young to drink now. If you have it I would wait for sure.

  • Holy crap this is good. This has cherry, blood orange, pomegranate, smoke, and earth. It's ripe with refreshing acidity and some tannins which become pronounced with a few hours of air. My only nit is that the finish does not match the rest of the wine. As the first sentence might suggest, this was much better than I expected given what I remember from my prior bottles, and I certainly liked my prior bottles.

  • Really nice showing, I was afraid it would be closed, but steady and straightforward red cherry fruit, strong earthy elements, with some air some smoke and cocoa. Good length, vivid but balanced acids, fun. Doesn't hold up well overnight, but on night 1 more open than I expected, and a B+

  • There are good and bad things about opening this bottle. The bad is that there was serious seepage trough the cork, with some stuff accumulated below the capsule. It actually smelled corked and I was pretty pissed. But after 0.5 hours in the decanter corkiness almost completely disappeared and the wine showed nice nose of cherries and citrus with spice component. On the palate this was medium bodied, clearly young with cherries, lemon, minerals, piercing acidity and some spiciness. Good match with fried/sauteed pork chops. Good finish. Very nice wine especially at the Bourgogne level. This is clearly way too young but I'm glad it was opened now, otherwise it would be completely corked. It held up nicely on the second night, no "corked" signs at all. Very respectable wine. Even with the cork flaw issues this deserves 88-89 pts.

  • Give it 15-20 years and it will be terrific and the 89 score I give will rise to 92+ I'm sure. It just takes a long time for Chevillon's to come around, even the village wines. Very few 2005 Cali pinots will live as long as this. My score is based on current drinkability not on potential. You can't go wrong with Chevy. This is just very young.

  • Extremely difficult to enjoy at this time. Lots of good stuff, but the sour cherry tartness hides most of the fruit and even the tannin, which will moderate with time. I don't think the acid will moderate anytime soon. I have enjoyed other cheaper '05 Bourgognes more. (I disagree with Siggy on this one, but totally agree with his notes on the '05 Sauvestre Cote de Nuits-Villages.) By the way, the Chevillon Bourgogne Passsetoutgrains isn't very enjoyable now, either, but I'm guessing that it may improve in a few years. I was told that it was all pinot noir, but I bet there is a good amount of gamay in it.

  • sour cherry and baby poop nose. underbrushy and tart-lighter body doesnt fit . pitty quality in the midpalate. needs time. finish _tries_ to integrate it.

  • Tremendously approacable at this time; with 30 minutes a very nice, rounded burgundy, showing nice balance and savoury, red and some black fruit elements. Worth buying a case at $22+.

  • Initially more red fruit oriented, bright red cherry base accented by red currant and earth. With time this filled out and got darker, black cherries with some cocoa. This is a good inexpensive poster child for the vintage- quite structured for a Bourgogne, yet with some outstanding fruit. You feel there's a little hiding in reserve, a Bourgogne that could use a few years. The tannins are ripe and fine enough to make this easy to drink now, but I think 3-5 years would make even better. B++

  • Absolutely delicious. I'll let my other 3 bottles rest for a while longer, but I wish I had lots more.

  • Unfortunately, my browser ate my tasting note. Suffice it to say, when I first opened this, my impression was similar to that of Rieslingfan's, and on the last glass, several hours later, it's almost the same as Siggy's, though the tannins are surprising on the finish right now. I think this will only get better with time. At $25, I think this is a wine to buy by the case.

  • Dark red color. Forward aromatics of cherry and strawberry fruit and earth. Very easy to drink, as the balance of fruit and structure is fine, the tannins ripe and supple and the fruit and earth flavors well integrated. There's enough fruit and structure here to allow for 5+ years of cellaring in my opinion.

Indeed the price has gone up for this wine lately ($23.99 before discount near me), but it's still hard to find better drinking for the price.

  • Medium maroon color. Dark, serious, dense black fruit on the nose. On the palate, this is brooding and a touch stern at present. Perhaps in a mini closed phase? With some swirling, I get ripe black cherry fruit, earth, and baking spices, followed by enticing hints of animal and iron. Very Nuits in character. Moderate ripeness and length. Another 2005 Burg that transcends its appellation -- this drinks like a good villages Nuits from a ripe year. At the full retail tariff of $35, however, this does not seem like an especially good value.
