Gaja 2000 tasting, wine #1: Blue/red fruit, cedar, sweet tobacco, hay, grass. Evident cab nose. Warm palate with expressive and highly concentrated fruit. Lots of spices, tar and oak. Friendly and well integrated tannins. Early in drinking window. 95% CS, 3% MER, 2% CF. From vineyards in Barbaresco. High quality wine but not my cup of tea.

My first time with this wine, a cab sauvignon based wine from Piedmont with some decent age on the bottle. I think this would have really benefitted from a decant, but the bottles were disappearing swiftly and not time for such matters. The color on this is quite dark and dense, the nose is black fruits, earth with some rose petal floral notes. This definitely gets better the longer it is in the glass, with the nice aromatics coming through the denser palate. While I liked this I didn't really spend as much time with the glass as I would have liked.

Drank during wine tasting in martinborough with small group of GARY narkles. Drank it later in the night and after cleaning palate with patron anejo. Soft as silk panties, a little blue cheese and eucalyptus. Loved it

Kleur: Diep robijnrood. Aroma / bouquet: Het typische bouquet van een belegen Cabernet-Sauvignon. Donker kersenfruit, gronderig, paddestoelen. Een vleugje stalgeur. Tertiair. En aangenaam! Smaak / Afdronk: Gematigde zuurgraad. Prachtige concentratie. Vol. Maar tegelijkertijd boterig zacht. Fantastisch rijpe tannines. Indrukwekkend lange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: De Wine Advocate was buitengewoon kritisch, ik ben zeer enthousiast. Heerlijk. Mondvullend en boterzacht. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 91/100

Gaja Masterclass with Gaia Gaja: Menthol, spice, toast and truffle. Good acidity on the palate, the wine still feels tight though, there is not a lot given away at this point in time and maybe another 5 years would help.

Both Parker and Tanzer underrated this wine. Wonderful black cherries, raspberry undertones, mushrooms, spice (but not black pepper), hints of green pepper and 20+ second finish. This wine took about 30 minutes to fully open but had almost not sediment and is in the front half of its ideal drinking window.

Medium garnet color. Nose was somewhat muted with some dark red fruit and green pepper coming through along with some oak related notes. Cherry and red currant flavors on the palate with some woody oak flavors coming through. Very dry tannins and a little hollow on the midpalate. Not much of a finish either. You can tell the wine was well made but overall this was a disappointment.

The Gaja Langhe Darmagi is a medium bodied, garnet wine with a brick edge. The wine is starting to show some age. The rich nose features licorice and vanilla. Plush and soft in the mouth with tastes of lots of melded red fruits. The long finish is rich with lots of red fruits. The wine has excellent balance and has become a nearly seamless wine. This is just stellar and is drinking very well at this point in time.

Blind Cabernet Tasting with the DC WLTV Forum crew (Urbana, Washington, DC): Tobacco and pencil, dried rose petals on the nose - really picked up the prosciutto on the table and ran with it - should have been a hint it was the Italian of the blind tasting. Enjoyed the dusty cocoa tannins and long dry finish but would have liked just a bit more fruit.

Decanted this wine for nearly 4 hours before my first glass. I did try a small 1oz. pour at first and it was tight, austere, and unapproachable. The first glass began with very earthy undertones augmented with dark cherry and hints of cocoa. The earthiness blew off after about 5-10 minutes and the dark cherry began to wrap itself around a strong dried tobacco flavor. The tobacco kept building over the course of the bottle to an absolute crazy level. The wine itself was still wound a bit tight, but was quite smooth, exhibiting good mushroom, tobacco, and cocoa flavors. As I near the end of my final glass, the cherry flavors began to crescendo to a strong, firm finish. This wine is sitting at 9 years old, and can probably last another 5-7 years. Not sure what I'll do with my other bottle, but it won't be opened anytime soon.

Dark fruits and a dusty, Piedmont-inspired cabernet nose. Medium bodied and deep, classy texture and flavors. Fine tannins. Young, but perfectly enjoyable. Very good.
