Got this at a remarkable discount from my local wine shop. We had this with Italian food. It was oaky heavy with some new world over extraction. Dark fruits were present; day two showed some more impressive old world notes on the nose. Heavy wine, not my style but can appreciate how one may.

The nose needed an hour to open up. There are complex and beauty aroma of vanilla chocolate, cassis, sweet licorice and clove with undertone of dried herbs and lavender. Rich and smooth palate. Good depth and length. Almost full-bodied polished structure transiting nicely into a long and lingering finish. Ready to drink now if you decant. Otherwise, keep this for another 3 years for the elements to develop greater complexity and depth. 94-95 pts

My first experience with Don Melchor and it was fabulous. Clearly new world - it does not have the austerity of some old world wines - but it doesn't have the heaviness of California cab either. Full-bodied, but doesn't fatigue the palate. The fruit is fresh and texture soft and satiny. There is some mineral note on the back end, maybe graphite, but more mouthwatering like volcanic sea salt, that I really enjoyed. Clearly a wine that can only come from an outstanding growing season and thoughtful, deliberate winemaking.

Method: decanted for 1 hour; Grassl 1855; 60 degrees
Look: medium+ ruby
Nose: cherry, blackberry, bay leaf, graphite, cedar, tobacco
Palate: blackberry, darker cherry, clove, tobacco;long- minus finish big black pepper, clove, tobacco, light cedar/shaved pencil, touch of graphite; dry; medium+ body; high- fine-ish but firm tannins; medium+ to high- acidity
Overall: This is a serious Cab. Definitely no where near underripe, but not remotely flamboyant. Fruit is present but isn't especially ripe and the herbal/savory notes carry pretty much equal weight. Surprisingly pretty elegant for a young Cab. Really nice but firm structure is great for food now and suggest wonderful aging potential. 93 - 94 points. Young, but excellent, with a lot of upside.
Update: after a couple of more house, a bit of very pleasant funk, maybe like dank earth, appeared on the nose.
Great with food (steak and scalloped potatoes in this instance)

Easter dinner! Decanted 4 hours and out popped this beautiful nose of berries, mocha, and mint. The pour did not disappoint either with those notes plus black cherry, currants and a slight hint of smoke. Should be a drinker for the next 5-10 years.

PnP. The bottle was in the basement, but perhaps a bit on the warm side. Smooth and elegant. A very typical Cabernet Sauvignon, with its flavors of blueberries, blackberries and black cherries. Medium to full body. Perhaps not awe-inspiring, but surely a wonderful wine. Still young. We have 11 more and look forward to be drinking them over the years. Good purchase. Dec-28-2023: my third bottle. It was quite tannic this time around. Better wait for two years or so?

Decanted for five hours. Oh my…the nose is absolutely addicting, with milk chocolate, blackberries, black cherries, mint, ripe yellow peach marmalade, black currants and salty earth. The finish flows on like an endless wave, with layered, fine tannins; the body is full, and the prudent elegance definitely satisfies. Stylish. This unfolds nicely, and is almost unctuous. Truly one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignons in the world: my favorite from here. Drink 2025 -.

Cary's Cabs around the world (Cary's Castle): Dark fruited profile, with a clean nose and notes of clove. Really nice, smooth finish. Good in so many ways, very good wine but doesn't have any element that clearly stands out from the rest. Finished 6 of 6, was my 3 of 6.

Very good wine, still too young. High acid, classic Chilean nose of green bramble and dark earth. Dark ruby color, sour cherry, raspberry, black plums, leather, vanilla and spice notes from the barrel influence. Needs time, nice long aftertaste.

Deep ruby red colour. Medium and developing nose with leather, tobacco, black plum, blackcurrant and raisins. Medium taste of leather earth, tobacco, blackcurrant and vanilla. Long and dry finish. Medium (+) acidity. High tannins. Full body. A good Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon that has potential, but can’t understand the fuss about the 100 points. Needed four hours of air to “open”. Wait at least five years to open. Goes well with beef or lamb.

Medium ruby, medium + red plum, red cherry, blackberry, dried fruits, green bell pepper, hint of eucalyptus, vanilla, dry, medium + acidity, high alcohol, medium + ripe tannin, medium + finish, very good wine.
Medium ruby color. Robust nose of fresh black and red berries, licorice, browned oak, with a Carmenere-esque green menthol note. Dry, soft acidity, integrated tannins, palate follows through. Medium full body. Very good balance. Medium finish.
Nose - very ripe, plummy. Some nice eucalyptus / mint / pyrazines, but I keep thinking that the fruit seems a bit overripe. 14.5% and it shows it a bit hot until given some air in the decanter. It's medium bodied with nice fresh flavors and fine tannins. It became more balanced after getting air. Finish is only medium+ in length, which surprised me. The overripe note on the nose remained throughout this tasting. I'll give it a few years before trying my next bottle.

- Five hour decant. Very very deep, yet bright, ruby color. Blackberry, pomegranate, oregano, and subtle black pepper on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, with nice, lingering acidity. Firm, full, medium intensity tannins on the longish finish.
This is earthy, yet well built. It became more buttery and caramely after a couple of days. Vacuvin’d and set in fridge for two days.
PnP, dark purple, black cherry colored to the edge. Nose is gasoline, black fruit, cedar. Palate is asphalt, blackberry, oak. Full-bodied, slightly tannic. This is fine and has a somewhat pleasant overall impact, but not sure what all the fuss is about.
At the pop n pour this had the typical petrol and anise aromas that I detected in many other vintages from this producer.. I was quite disappointed after hours of air time with this wine and was swearing at JS for his 100 point review. But on the second day this came together, the fruit came forward in a very intense way and the wine offered up an upscale mix of red fruit, acidity and moderate depth and length. I really loved the '10 & '12 and this competes with both of them but in a much different way. A few years should benefit this baby.
This wine was made with wine critics in mind. It is all about “smoothness” “balance” “silkness” “purity”etc. What it lacks is character. It looks like it was made by a chemical engineer adding desired sensorial ingredients rather than by an enologist. “Let’s add some more balance that Suckling likes that” Those South American 100 pointers are beginning to look all the same. In the end you don’t know if you are drinking a Catena, a Cheval des Andes 2017 or a Concha y Toro. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great sip that will improve for some years, an easy drink and the bottle goes fast. It is only that I don’t like where this 100 points spread by Suckling is driving the industry in South America Tasted along a Pontet Canet 2016, a much much better wine.
Monumental! This silky smooth single vineyard beauty from a blockbuster vintage has it all - depth, complexity and length. I’d stack it up against California Cabs 5x the price. Perfecto!
This is one of the more impressive young wines I have had in quite some time. Eucalyptus is very evident on the nose with some menthol cigarettes, white pepper, cacao and vanilla too. Gorgeous but not overripe blueberry, kirsch and baked blackberry pie fruit. Secondary notes of seaweed, mothballs, cayenne pepper and Thai basil. This is seemless and has an amazingly integrated palate this is very well made. It’s the kind of wine that is so smooth and flowing that it almost tricks you into thinking it’s not a big as it is. The best young Melchor I have had even above the classic 2003. This was delicious upon opening and steadily improved over 5 hours of consumption. This obviously is going to be incredible in 10-15 years and beyond.
2.5 hours in the decanter gets it to a sweet spot right now, purple, aromatic with flower, graphite, mixed berry and a hint of spice on the nose, completely balanced, silky and elegant, youthful flavors of dark currants, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, mint and herb, not Bordeaux, not Napa Valley, this lands right in-between, sports a lengthy finish, the hype seems to be real here, flawless in a style that is accessible now and might be best in the first decade or two due to relaxed tannins but only time will tell, very nice accompaniment with carne asada tacos
