Double Blind. The moment this is poured I think this is Mugnier - the nose screams it. But then the palate, while very red fruited and pleasant, is unusually warm and slightly sweet, which isn't the typical Mugnier profile, and I've had a bunch of the 2002 Fuees recently. I wonder if it may have been that I used this glass for the Faiveley? It's a nice wine, but not a great example of a Mugnier on the palate. That said, I was still kicking myself for not sticking with my guess of Mugnier - the nose is completely correct and absolutely lovely.

This village Chambolle-Musigny is said to come from; Les Plantes planted in 1968-69 & La Combe d’Orveau planted over several periods from 1952-1998.
PnP & slow ox for an hour in glass and btl prior to drinking in earnest. Light translucent crimson color with perfuse nose of roses, berries & light underbrush. This delivers signature Mugnier weightless, lacy elegance, finesse and silk wrapped around; pale cherry and raspberry, spice, minerality and underbrush. Such purity & class! Paid $50 and wish I could still get them for that!! 12.5% Alc. My last of 4 and no regrets as it seems at or very near peak now at age 17+.

Nice dark sweet tarry cherry aromas with earthy spices. Tart dry black fruit oriented flavors, light in weight, but big in texture. I liked this slightly better than a bottle from ages mos ago. In a good window.

PnP. Light translucent crimson color with perfuse nose. Gorgeous and at its peak but I'd guess this holds fine for at least 3 more years. This delivers classic Mugnier elegance, finesse and silk combined with; tart cherry and strawberry, spice and mineraly flavors. Great nose. Such purity and class! Can't believe how much this wine has improved since I bought back in 2006! Today its drinking more like a 1er cru than village wine. Everything you want from a Burg, or, at least, what I want anyhow. One blt left. I'll try the next one in 2017+ Paid $50 and wish I could still get them for that! Drinks more like $100+ wine today.

This bottle just wasn't very enjoyable and not at all what I would expect from an '02 Mugnier Chambolle. Kind of musty but doesn't seem like TCA. No real fruit or charm here. Maybe an off bottle but just doesn't seem overtly flawed.
Light in color with a pretty rather than powerful nose with mossy undergrowth and red pinot fruit and oddly an almost basil herbal side. It has a nice balance of fruit earth and savory. Airy and understated, Supple and soft, but leaving a larger impact than the body would suggest. very fine chambolle. Lacy tannins, and an easiness to drinking this. This grew to a betternwine over a cople hours. Early peak for me and lovely. 90 pts

Lovely pure Chambolle. Sweet red fruit on the nose and palate; still quite primary. Didn't fade over a couple of hours. No obvious tannin, decent acidity. This may still be on its upward trajectory, but is very tasty right now.

PnP. Light translucent crimson color with perfuse nose. Wow does this improve over the evening! Wait at least an hour before you start to drink much of this. It puts on considerable weight over the evening. I opened it at 5PM and it was really rocking about 90 minutes in. This is classic Mugnier elegance, finesse and silk combined with; tart cherry and strawberry, spice and mineraly flavors. Two blts left. I'll try the next one in 2015+.

A bit reticent, by dinner time (maybe an hour of air) if was showing quite well, and held on through the night. Smooth red fruits, earth, rose petals. Good acids (just this side of tangy), delicate mouthfeel, really enjoyable. Didn’t hold up well overnight, but I thought quite nice for several hours. B+/A-

Much better than three years ago. Smooth, and got fruitier over the 4 hours I drank it. Opened two hours early and poured off one glass. A very balanced wine that is very beautiful. If more complex, it would garner more points; but then it would not be so balanced and smooth- oh the tangled web.

Drank over 2 nights as it seems possibly a tad closed. I love the pretty translucent pale crimson color. This is definitely Chambolle Musigny. Delicacy and elegance in spades with reserved brambly red fruit and spice flavors. Some forest floor. The palate never seemed to flesh out like some prior btls showed with air. Perhaps slightly closed or, maybe this will never show a lot of meat on the bones. Definitely best with food than stand alone at present. I have three more to find out. Not the oppulence of some 02s from other producers.

Something pungent, Elegant delivery of ethereal sweet strawberry cherry fruits with poise and lightly teases the palate. Domaine JF Mugnier Tasting (Hilton Hotel, Singapore): I thought this must be amongst the handful of the very best village Burgundies I have had in a long time. As good as the 2006 was, this was drinking at peak perfection. Lovely nose, with earth, shitake mushrooms, a touch of smoke, some funky, musty meatiness, wet soil and perfumy wilted flowers with a touch of boiled herbs. Very complex. I found it rather gentler than the 2006 on the bouquet and rather more high-toned. Palate was clean and achingly pure and clear, with cherries and flowers just filling the mouth. Lovely balance, great freshness, good concentration - not Grand Cru or 1er Cru complexity, but everything was just in the right place. Fantastically resolved, silky smooth, full of delicate floral touches, with a pretty, almost perfect harmony, it slid into seamlessly into a fresh finish full of pure cherries weaved thru with flowers and hints of umami. Only issue? I do not think this will develop far more. At the moment though, perfect. About as good an expression of Chambolle as you will ever get. And about as good a village as I have ever tasted.

Alluring floral sweet with such purity on the nose almost like honey with perfume flowers. Contains some hints of herbs but beautiful bouquet which you can go on and on smelling. Light ruby. A little pleasant funk precedes a very pretty, very Chambolle nose--rose water, white flowers and some pomegranate. Silky, fine texture. This lingers so. Then there's some forest floor and the slightest hint of a grilled shitake.

Serendipitous that I should be drinking something Chambollic with England playing Pakistan, but this had been on my list for some while.
Initially accompanying roast chicken, the nose when opened was delightful, strawberries and black tea and hints of incense poured out of the glass without effort. The palate was light, and that didn't change and it trod a nice line between sweetness and savouriness. Just lovely, not a great wine and just lacking a little acidity, but delish. I am sure it has further life and a hunch tells me it might give a little more, but who cares, lovely now.

Pale but deepened with air. Penetrating nose of strawberry and tangy sour cherry right out of the chute; later, this is joined by licorice and earthy, forest floor tones. Light and exceptionally delicate, but nearly magical flavor authority with wonderful vinosity, subtle red fruit, and an evergreen component. It even picked up some sappiness over time. Tingly acidity, little to no tannin. Sorry to wax poetic, but more so than any other wine I've tasted recently, this modest village wine just crystallized the essence of Burgundy for me-wafting, almost weightless, and heartbreakingly beautiful without being overwhelming in its size or extraction. As impressive as many 2005's are, I wonder if they will be this lilting and seductive.

There are plenty of tasting notes on this board regarding this wine and my notes would be entirely consistent with the bulk of them as well as my last note on it. A lovely, pure, delicate example of Chambolle. Not particularly deep or hugely complex but entirely amenable, sexy, aromatic and delicious. Yummy stuff not showing any signs of age.

Pulled from the cellar, popped, decanted into a narrow decanter and poured right away. Immediately, this showed bright cherries and floral notes, but the palate was lean and thin. But within minutes, it began putting on weight, adding a sweet cherry, spicy note to the palate and a gorgeous, lacy mouthfeel that showed that weightless weight that good Burgundy can get. The finish seemed to hang around for minutes on end, haunting one with the memory of its beauty. I kept smelling the glass even after finishing the bottle, I couldn't get enough of it.

Wednesday Night Burgs: Popped and poured. A delightful wine. Complex nose of red fruit, earth/fungus and iron. On the palate this is barely mid-weight but with good flavor intensity and excellent balance. Fans of bigger wines should probably avoid this because it's extremely understated and subtle. Properly paired with the right dish, however, this would show even better.

Murky, light-reddish color. This is a very delicate Chambolle, soft and elegant. Raspberries, cherries, mushroom, a hint of dried herbs and asian spice. Great for it's level. Wonderful acidity. May benefit from a few more years in the cellar.

Just a beautiful wine. Freddy Mugnier is a real master. Soaring aromatics that have gained intensity and complexity over the past 2 days. The wine is in fact fairly light in color--not indicative of the mouth-coating, sap infused flavors. Very Chambolle. Drinks niceley right now, but I would not be afraid to hold some of these for 10 more years. ++

Decided to pull one of these before going off to France. Nice send off. Initially this has a little Barolo (rose petals and tar) to the nose that is interesting and intriguing. Over the course of two hours this goes from extremely demure, red-fruited, elegant and sophisticated stuff to very nicely medium-bodied, red and black fruit interplay oriented, deep and extremely polished. A wonderful example of a beautiful village wine in a very nice vintage made by a terrific winery. While this is a fabulous wine now I do think that there is a good chance that in 10 years from now this will be a super-stylish, sexy wine. I said to my girlfriend, “It’s a shame we really won’t be able to buy Mugnier’s wines any longer.” Her (totally outraged), “Why not!?” Me, “Well we paid a bit over $200 wholesale for the ’04 Musigny and the ’05 is, well, a few thousand dollars.” Her, “How much would this wine be?” Me, “I don’t know, a lot more than the $30 wholesale we paid.” Her, “I would pay $200 for this wine.” Me, heart attack.

Fancy that, I actually agree with my note of several months ago! Perhaps more plum, less underbrush, and more noticeable tannin than the previous bottle, but every bit as lovely and light. I am going to have a hard time keeping my hands off the remaining couple of bottles until the consensus "start drinking" date of 2009 since I love where it is right now.

Light color which deepened in the glass. Subtle but beautiful nose of strawberry, coffee, and leaves. Again, light bodied but full of flavor-strawberry, cherry, caramel, and a twist of acidity. A perfect Chambolle village wine (I love this commune!) and the essence of Pinot laciness. How I wish I had Mugnier's big guns from this vintage, but I'm very happy drinking this. What more could you possibly ask of a village wine?

Napa/Sonoma Events; 8/2/2006-8/5/2006 (Various Venues): Bit restrained, or perhaps closed down? Took a while for the fruits to come forward but with time, they will be better resolved. Good balance and tannins so it will benefit with more time in the bottle, score may go up

Lovely raspberry and cherry nose. On the palete, initially overtly tannic. After an hour or so, the tannins subsided and the fruit emerged, as did a hint of earth. Medium finish. In the end, a lovely, soft, balanced burgundy in a fairly light style. (Drank at Cafe Lula; matched beautifully with a medium-rare duck breast)

(at Morrell’s Wine Bar – NYC) no formal notes. Light ruby. Clean, berry dominated nose with a bit of earth – rather simple. Light and fairly unexpressive – the structure shows with some pretty fruit in the background. This wine is very tight (from a newly opened bottle). Good, but overall, I am not that impressed – especially for $34 a glass. (13)

Oddly, this bottle did not show the exuberant fruit I expected from a villages Chambolle in this fruit-forward vintage. Perhaps it has already started to close down. I gave it about 3 hours of decather time before serving it and drank it over the following two hours, but there was practically no evolution. Shy on the nose, the aroma was essentially that of simple red cherry. About the weight on the palate I would expect from a wine of this appellation, but from memory, it seems less structured than the corresponding 2001 version. Pleasant cherry flavors are repeated on the palate with a bit of tannin yet to be resolved. Medium length. Certainly easy to drink and quite enjoyable now and may yet become more interesting with a few years of bottle age.

Really enjoyed this. Opened an hour before serving. Subtle and delicate with a lovely streak of spiciness (especially cinnamon) on both the nose and palate. Very pretty right now.

Got a lot better after two hours. Missing enough fruit and complexity before 2 hours.

Tasting Group Dinner - Burgs (Heidi's & La Belle Vie, Minneapolis): Slightly pale cherry red color. Fragrant nose. Light- to medium bodied, with herb-tinged cherry fruit and iron. Quite delicate; would be outstanding if it had a touch more flesh and fruit.

Wines With Dinner (The Wine Summit At Lake Louise): Medium bright ruby in colour; aromas are pure and clean with a slight floral note – primarilycherry fruit and a little bit of roasted coffee; tangy cherry fruit on the palate; medium body – fine acidity; rolls out to a fresh lasting finish.

This particular bottle showed less lively fruit and more leafiness and acidity than other bottles earlier this year. Very subtle, delicate Burgundy.

What more could you possibly ask of a village wine?

there is really a very lovely bottle of pinot. definately lighter in color and body, it has some delicate aromas and mouth feel that seem very much in balance... not at all sure how it will age, but a beautiful bottle to drink right now...

French Laundry and Artisinal home cooking! (Home with Charmaine, Chas and Chris, Hong Kong): Recommended by Gallerie du Vin to go with the scallops. Light colour but plenty of fruit including strawberries and rasberries. Laking a little body but had well integrated tannin and acidity. Went well with the food but not a great wine.
