  • Found this on closeout at an Albertson's, then opened on a whim since it was our anniversary weekend. In two words: still young.

Elegant, fine aromas and flavors of cassis, raspberry, rose, garrigue and fennel. Tightly wound on the palate, even after being open for several hours. Feels like 'fine wine' due to the integral structure wrapped around a core of fruit and secondary inner aromas. In this case, the mid-palate starts to ramp up, then tannins clamp down. Medium acidity, copious but very refined, noble tannins.

Obviously this is one built for the cellar. However, this didn't come across as a wine where the concentration without a doubt will stand up to the structure. I didn't go back for more, despite the silly good price. Comes across in a fairly elegant, restrained style, and definitely should be held until at least it's 10th birthday. Note: not tasted from ideal stemware.

  • Still very young but very enjoyable after several hours of air. Very smooth, red fruit, cherries and raspberries, medium acidity. Potential to be stunning in a few years.

  • Eager to try young out of the 6-pack of ‘19s I indulged myself in getting as this is one of my favourite wines. 100% enjoyable (fresh fruit, med+ acidity for balance, smooth smooth smooth)…but hoping/expecting these will get better over time. Won’t revisit too soon - maybe again in ‘25. Until then…bon nuit Beaucastel!

  • Pride of the Neufs - the 19 Ch de Beaucastel is as mysterious & beguiling as it is complex & generous. A number of years since I last had this wine - incomprehensible given how highly drinkable this wine is. Darkish ruby, translucent in appearance. Nose sings w highly fragrant aromas red fruit - raspberries, sweet-touched cherries, garrigue, tad of alcohol, woodsmoke, rose petals, spice. Full-bodied, yet retained elegance, perfectly balanced palate, graceful w grip & energy, long finish laced w warm fruit & spice!

  • Young but easily accessible already. A 2 hour decant was enough to smooth out the initial rough edges. Dark red fruits and some herbal and floral notes. This is complex and fun to drink. Red cherries, kirsch, garrigue, lavender and rosemary. This paired perfectly with duck magret. I would love to try a much older version of this wine to compare

  • Very nice wine but even a multi-hour decant wasn’t enough.

  • The bottle went quickly, everyone loved it. Balanced, integrated, and complex. Had decanted for about 6 hours, and that did help it open up.

  • Much too young, but it is not bearable to buy this wine without tasting the young version. Clear ruby to the rim, transparent at the core. Muted at first (decanted for two hours) , deep dark cherry oozes from the glass, combined with spicy tones of black pepper, rosemary and bay leaf and an underlying tone of licorice. Full bodied attack, lots of sweet cherry fruit on the mid palate. Then the acidity kicks in together with very fine and smooth tannins. Aftertaste is full of dark cherries and some fresh raspberry/strawberry tones together with black pepper and bay leaf. Some warmth at the end, but the long finish is fresh, delicate and salivating. This is a rare combination of power and finesse. Close to child abuse to drink this wine now, wait 3-5 years and then enjoy for the next two decades at least. A very good vintage for Beaucastel.

  • Compared to Bordeaux left bank, good example that CdP can be opened extremely early. Fruit based with lots of spices and great intensity. Worth 4 times the money over its little brother (Coudoulet)? Not sure.

  • Very lovely, especially on day two. Great medium weight, fruit and earth are balanced. I always favor this producer and this vintage lives up to my expectations.

  • Clear medium ruby; clean medium nose of leather, soil, red currant, wood and mustiness; dry; high acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavour intensity; palate is tarter with addition of raspberry jam and cocoa; long finish; drinking well after a 1 hour decant, but shows so much promise - I’ll wait at least 2 years before opening my next bottle; the raspberry notes on the palate brought lightness and elegance to an otherwise muscular wine; wished for a more expressive nose; score should improve with age

  • Decanted for 3 hours. Tastes very generic. Did not get the beaucastel feel and taste. Heat showing up too much for me. No middle weight. Blue and black fruit with some leather. Medium lenght

  • Tasted as a vertical with the 14 and 09.

    Medium ruby.

Pronounced on the nose with rich raspberry, black cherry, licorice, blackberry, black olive, dried herbs, vanilla, chocolate, clove and caramel. Youthful.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. Medium plus acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, long finish.

Amazing wine with great intensity. Can drink now but definitely worth waiting.

  • Big Beau tonight to compare (not really) with the Baby Beau last night. Medium deep and limpid magenta in colour. Purple and black fruits on the nose with suede, toasted garrigue, fennel and some camphor as well. Medium full bodied, elevated, alcohol, acidity and tannins, but the tannins are ripe and finely textured, and a long, off dry tingly finish. The palate is young and feels slightly under weight, with notes similar to the nose, especially the crunchy purple and black fruits, woody garrigue, camphor and new leather. It seems that the blend is quite a bit different this year as it doesn't exhibit the classic Beaucastel flavour profile. Perhaps more Syrah or Mourvedre than usual? Still pleasant enough at this stage and in need of time to integrate and fill out. 92 points for now.

  • Slate and pomegranate notes. Mouthfeel is smooth and full. Tannins are high with a fine character. Acidity is medium-high. Overall, this wine has great structure and is still very young and will get better over time.

  • Beautiful complex wine with a finish that lingers for minutes. Young, the wine has a lot of ripe fruit, but you can also tell this is going to age nicely.

  • Deep ruby colour.

High intensity aromas of caramel, vanilla, cranberry, red currant, red cherry, common, mocha, candied black plum, blackberry.

    Pronounced palate.

Full body, high acid, high tannin, medium (+) finish.

  • Favorites - 2022 Wine Spectator Grand Tour - Las Vegas: Aromas of plum & cherry, garrigue and wet stone. Rich, yet lifted, on the palate. Seamless and refined, very elegant. Closing with fine tannin and long length.

  • My pick of the various high end 2019 CDP's I have tasted to date. This is a big call, as I found the Clos des Papes rather stirring in a groinish sort of way. This one is for the mind first, the stiffy second but make no mistake, it still scores highly on the Stormy Daniels scale of stiffynosity.

I drank this over 3 days, decanted and from the first it was gorgeous. Early on I found the Grenache seemed strong in the blend but it was the good Grenache - strawberry, raspberry, some spice - not the lolly water/porty stuff that gives me the horrors. After about 6 hours blueberry (Mourvedre?) started to add to the picture in good ways, then I also got some restrained blackberry and plum. There is a little earthiness but this wine stayed very light on its feet, fresh and focused on exquisite, perfumed, primary fruits.

As I have noted elsewhere, the great wines seem to be about structure differentiating them from the merely excellent and so it is here. The sandy tannins are a delight, like vaulted arches in a magnificent cathedral.

My only hesitation is a reputation, deserved or not, from some Brettanomyces issues at the winery. I got nothing of this swine in my bottle and I note other reviews of this year don't seem to give any indication of badness lurking.

  • Decanted 2ish hours.

Blueberry, forest floor, cherry, violets, Chambord liquor, leather, minerality, a well stock humidor.

Paired awesome with BBQ beef Hot Pockets.

  • Vinetasters: 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. A mix of red and black fruit, but slightly stewy and feeling dried out. Thin and empty on the palate, missing midpalate, but with structural elements all jutting out, especially the alcohol and tannin. Feels like a wine that has dried out. My 5th, group's 5th.

  • Wonderful elegance here, lovely silky tannins and very pretty fruit that is perfectly ripe and without any overripe flavors, lots of freshness and minerality as usual for Beaucastel, quite dense in texture, finishes on red berry fruit and chocolate flavors. A very fine vintage. Drinks well right out of the bottle, so no problem in trying it during its youth. - 95 points

  • Settling down in bottle already, it’s fairly dark fruited, with some licorice, moderately high alcohol, and a pleasant tea note. A good, not great Beaucastel.

  • This wine is stunning. A complete effort. Light on its feet, will drink well now and for thirty years.

  • The 2019 Beaucastel is rich but fairly classic in present with red currant, plum, garrigue, and smoke. Good minerality, bright acidity, with a bit of a tannic structure that will support aging but is balanced by sweetness and the aforementioned acidity to deliver early accessibility. Drink starting 2025.

  • I've had the fortune to try several older Beaucastels from others' cellars over the years, but have never tasted it young. Tasted over three days, with not much change over the days which certainly bodes well for its long life ahead. At this early stage it's unsurprisingly very primary, however, even now it shows incredible complexity from the myriad of grapes that compose the wine. The wine was certainly a joy to drink even in its infancy, but I don't think it's worth the price of entry to drink now. This is a wine that should be cellared for 15-30 years. If you want something to drink young, buy a few bottles of Coudoulet.

  • Served blind to me, what was effectively a barrel sample. The dark fruited flavors and white pepper from the grenache shine through. Alcohol somewhat high and Uber ripe at this point, so very hard to judge but I felt it had a lot in common with the 2015, except for a slightly darker profile. These really need to sit a few years to relax and uncoil. It’s like an early teenager right now

  • I knew better, but just picked up these 375’s and couldn’t resist. Don’t touch for a few more years - even in small format. Still a bit grapey and reductive, and only hitting at the meaty, peppery goodness that will emerge. Objectively enjoyable today but not even scratching at what it will be in a few.

  • Very tight .. no where ready to drink. Materials seem to be there for success but didn’t spend a lot of time with it since it was at a restaurant for a friends bday. A decant helped unwind it a bit.

  • Spicy, meaty, earthy, rich and lushly textured, the wine has depth of flavor, complexity and lift. The wine balanced, concentrated and the fruit shows ripeness with lift that works. The spicy essence to the red fruits is on the nose and in the deep, dark, spicy red fruits on the palate and finish. Drink from 2025 - 2039

  • From half-bottle. Decanted for three hours. Dark ruby colour. Red and dark berries, cherry, garrigue, liquorice, toast, and mineral notes, with balancing acidity, fine, ripe tannin, and very good length. Good concentration. Tightly wound, but well-balanced, with good fruit. Very promising! Hold; start drinking from 2031.

  • Tasted at Terroir Renaissance. Signature CDP. Powerful and balanced but not overly ripe or jammy often found in other CDPs. Intense and long finish.

  • Decanted for an hour. Bramble berries, terra-cotta, sous bois, violets and some anise. Enters very suave, then becomes almost sappy during the long ending. The tannins are silky, with staying power as this is such a baby. Layered and like many vintages before, this will age rather well. It reminds me of the ‘16 meets the ‘18. So much depth. Drink 2025 -.
