What a nice surprise from this difficult vintage and kind of under-the-radar producer. It has aged perfectly and shows a really pretty deep golden, almost orange color. Explosive but mature aromatics of caramel, brown sugar, honey, pineapple, ripe pear, smoke, minerality, some baking spices, also some citrusy notes too. It‘s medium-full bodied, with a creamy mouthfeel, medium+ acidity and medium+ sweetness that has integrated nicely. Medium-long finish. A rich, creamy and lush Spätlese that paired beautifully with Char Siu pork ribs and a salad of cucumber and watermelon.

Golden orange nectar. Ripe mandarin oranges, honeyed tropical fruits, luscious and rich-unto-Auslese territory. Agree with others, more a dessert wine. An absolute winner. Wish I had a case.

Golden color. Lovely nose of smoke, minerals, baking spices, some caramel and ripe pear. On the palate there is similar flavors of spices, botrytis, pear and some peach. Medium-full bodied with an almost thick viscosity, medium+ acidity and a pretty long finish. This is a very lush, fresh and rich Spätlese with some Age. (91+)

Spatlese? Rich botrytis, honey, stone fruit. This is about the exuberance, not the subtlety. Get your stone/slate fix elsewhere. Full bodied with very good acidity and good sugar. A fun wine, but I'm not sure I'd serve it with the main course.

Still has all the power of a big auslese, not to mention the botrytis to go with it. Very tropical with lingering honey notes. Works well as a dessert wine. Still so much stuffing that it is impossible to get to any underlying site expression.

Well, age hasn't tamed it. This is still a big, burly wine that is more like gold capsule auslese in style than spatlese. That said it's a tasty gold capsule auslese, but don't invite it to dinner. Tons of honeyed peaches dominate the nose and palate, and with all that fruit as well as a healthy dose of spice, it's hard to cut through this to see any underlying minerality. This is still a baby.

This wine has the richness of an auslese with the classic broad and exotic profile of the Wehlener vineyard. The acidity is lower than average, but evidently the winemaker knew this and fermented to 10% alcohol with a lower RS so it balances out. There is nice mineral and floral nuance (botrytis too), but there's nothing austere about this wine. It matches flamboyantly next to a spicy and fragrant Thai curry. Favorite Riesling/Thai pairing ever.

I matched this with roast duck that my wife made. Normally sells for $25. This is the artist label. Terry Theise gave this ** and wrote that 2006 was the best vintage the estate has ever had. Martin Kerpen owns 6.5 hectares in the Mosel which are devoted 100% to Riesling. Kerpen is known for making sleek, feminine and soulful wines. This was no exception. Notes of botrytis with Auslese complexity. There was a lot going on here. Lovely sweet/sour component. Notes of apricot, stone and sea salt. Solid minerality and acidity. This should age for 25 years. 91 points.

This is the artist label if it matters to anyone. Very pretty and lush Mosel perfume. Could use a bit more acidity for me. Maybe just a touch dumb, meaning it needs more time. Fun to drink anyway. the barest hint of diesel showing through.

This is a big spatlese. If there was new world and old world in German rieslings, this will clearly be new world. Big ripe honey, pear and quincy are followed by a clean sour apple aftertaste. On the first night the wine was very exhuberant only to settle nicely two nights later when everything was toned down and much better integrated. If someone had asked me in a blind tasting at that point what this wine was, I would have guessed a sauternes. This is good and should get better with time. 91+

So, here's the deal. We're working on developing our appreciation for white wines. As solid red devotees, it's difficult to appreciate a wine as sweet as this. I'm sure it is a very nice wine to those that can truly appreciate a Riesling of this caliber (hence the TN sans score).

Color of lush liquid gold, even subtle butter. The nose is still distinctly sulphury, with gracious amounts of loamy schist poking through. The fruit is as yet not so distinct on the nose, though certainly there, the earthy tropical fruits mating subliminally with even more pronounced earthy vegetal notes--brussel sprouts and asparagus. The palate is dense but spry and elegant through the 20-25 second finish. Delicious, pure fruit, though not with laser-like precision; rather, a sort of rustic perfection, a hearthy casserole of Wehlen minerality and tropical Spaetlese fruit. Really, really good.

This is a huge and imposing spatlese with lots of botrytis that needs several years to come around. Even after two days in the fridge it was still thick and impenetrable. There's plenty of fruit and acid though, so the future looks good.

Very similar tasting note to the one dated 5/24/2014. The wine has opened up some more. What a beautifully rich Spätlese!

Spatlese in name only, this is a rich, honeyed auslese that has enough fruit, spice & acidity to go for a long, long time.
