  • Could’ve matured a bit more and nicely

  • Very rich, big, ripe red cherry fruit, cassis, plum, and oak. Fruit very dominant at this stage. Hold.

  • Interesting … immediate balsamic note, prune and cola, with milk chocolate and deep rich cassis. A wall of underlying vanilla and the perception of heat and alcohol. Wafts of aromatic interest from the Carmenere and Cab Franc (cedar and licorice). Overdone? Probably, but with a supreme plushness of texture. Syrup and balsam. Thick and heavy dark and red fruit, bitter dark chocolate, persistent and hyper full bodied, but somehow not cloying and paired excellently with a bavette steak. Idiosyncratic, but wonderful.

  • Dark fruits, bell pepper and minerals on the nose. Beautifully polished tannins and great balance on the palate. Surprisingly ready to drink after 2 hours in the decanter.

  • Deep purple in colour. Pronounced notes intensity with notes of green bell pepper, black berry, black currant, toast and spices. Medium+ acidity and tannin. The tannin is polished and don’t taste harsh on palate. Full bodied and long finish. Youthful, a very good wine and will get better with age.

  • The 2018 Almaviva hails from the Puente Alto region of the Maipo Valley in Chile. The wine is a blend of 72% Cab Sauvignon, 19% Carmenere, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine spent 18 months in New French Oak.

On the nose the wine has intriguing aromas of grilled green pepper, jalapeño infused blackberry jam, black cherry, subtle hints of wet beach camp fire and sweet tobacco.

The palate has big bold chewy tannins, smokey raspberries, black plum and black cherries.

The wine has concentration, intensity and hits heavy in the beginning and tapers off quickly mid point and leaves a trail of spiciness. Black fruit also carries through with small presence throughout. Tannins in the wine are not overwhelming and integrate well with the acidity. The wine is very young and is easily approachable now but would benefit with addition time in the cellar to allow the wine to relax and fully open up. Another great vintage by a renown Chilean producer.

  • I think it's been a good 20 years since I last had Almaviva and I've been curious what they're up to. This is really quite lovely - it achieves Bordeaux proportions and its general look and feel at a level of effortlessness that most New World regions can only dream of. It doesn't lean on the oak to do it, either. There's a little bit of pencil shavings on top of the red currant fruit which comes across very pure with no interference from the tannin, which is ultra-silky and refined. The pricing is still kind of ambitious. You can get more complex wine in Bordeaux for less, although it's tough to think of any with a texture this classy. So I don't think I'll be accumulating these but it was definitely worth the try.

  • 98 points is a joke. Suckling is the bigger joke.

But I guess the jokes on me since I bought this wine.

Very good? Yes. About 91 points. And maybe $40 if I’m being really honest.
