Symbolic, drinking the Prisoner 4 weeks to the day after my breakup with E. from... California and on Valentine's Day.
Unfortunately, this is rather a caricature. No finesse, big boned, overly fruity, nearly like fruit juice (blueberry dominant), overly oaked with overly toasted oak. A cross between a fruit juice and oak tea? I may be exaggerating, but then isn't this what this wine is all about? Exaggeration?
Anyhow, a matter of taste, but this is not remotely my taste. Fortunately, while in California I did taste better local wines, including some really nice and well balanced wines, but as a general preference, I still prefer old-world wines.
88 or so?

On the nose- Big alcohol note, big rich ripe dark fruits, big dark berries, dark cherries, dark blackberries, ripe blueberries, cassis, figs, ripe plums, berry preserves, red flowers.
On the palate- Big pronounced alcohol note with big rich ripe dark fruits, big dark berries and dark cherries, dark blackberries and ripe blueberries, cassis an figs, ripe plums and preserves with a hint of red flowers. This wine is a crowd favorite style but it pretty out of kilter with the alcohol note being pretty overwhelming, but I can see why people like this for sure.

Simple, effective Zinfandel blend with punchy red fruit, some chocolate, touch of vanilla, and a clean, if quick, finish. Comes through as a bit off-dry, but the finish manages to hold things together with balanced acid and fine tannins.

Really nice. Seems to be a divisive bottle and perhaps a little expensive for what it is (Costco has it for $41). But it pleased the crowd and was a great nightcap. Outshone a Shiraz.

In-Store Tasting (Some really bad wines) (Bloomington, MN): Wow 90 average for this wine. Are you applying the tasting process??? Manufactured wine with cherry, sweet currants, smoke and a short finish. Acidity levels are low and this wine is not balanced. While drinkable the price point on this is one of the worst QPR's on the planet.

Served by the glass at Houston’s (IAH) United Polaris Club. Very deep magenta color. Floral perfume, mixed red and blue fruit, and sugar cookies on the nose. Smooth, dry palate. Soft tannins on the medium finish.
This is very quaffable, but so extracted and Caymus-esque. This is a nice party wine.

Very fruity/jammy style. A bit over the top and without much complexity. Reminds me of some Australian Shiraz fruit bombs. Ok as a casual wine but, for that, it is a bit pricey.

Jammy cherry fruit leather with a artificial vanilla flavoring type after taste. Very sweet and jammy red that gets tiring to drink after half a glass.
Fine for the most part, but the price really scared me - drinks like a $9.99 grocery red wine. Not for me, especially at $35-40 a bottle.

Assez extrait et dense. Fruits primaires, bleuets, mures et cassis surtout. Du bois et un peu de vanille avec des tannins bien enrobés. Finale assez longue avec un peu de chauffe.

Medium intensity nose of blackberry, blueberry and oak. Slight alcohol vapor on the nose. This is a higher ABV red blend, and it was apparent.
Initial sips were oak, blackberry, plum and vanilla. I found this one a little jammy and quite hot. As it opened up, some of the heat dissipated. Short finish of vanilla and oak.
Not very impressive for the price. Pairing with red meat or something smoked is a must.

I've always liked Prisoner reds but think they are overpriced for what they offer. This one was more approachable early than most. It pales in comparison to Turley Presenti and Dusi at a few $ more.

Amazing to taste Prisoner after some other great reds. This is young, but honestly it doesn’t hold up. Super sweet and overly vanilla. Reminds me of Conundrum — for me, not a compliment. Hate to be that guy, but there are better options for the price.

First time with Prisoner. Had occasionally wondered what the hype was about. Now realize it is for those whose tastes lean towards intensity and oak Would have liked to have had it work with steak and potatoes..but was a force by itself..vs a complement Not my preference

Cherry on the nose. Still super young, but we drank on a random Tuesday with some chocolate pecan pie we got for v-day. Much better than I remember. Well balanced. Good body. Soft tannins that mellow even more after 30+ minutes. Definitely recommend.

I think the 2019 vintage is my favorite offering of this wine, and is an excellent value in the $30s. Bold and fruity as is typical for the Prisoner, with cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. Nicely oaked with savory spice, subtle clove and sweet vanilla. Balanced tannins and a full mouthfeel lead to a lengthy finish.

Interesting wine that I simply needed to drink and understand. The Prisoner from the Prisoner Wine Company is easy to find everywhere with its distinctive (and unsettling) sketch on its label. The wines produced are all blends and this 2019 The Prisoner, a Zinfandel-Cabernet Sauvignon-Petite Sirah-Syrah-Charbono, blend is arguably its most famous. The Prisoner Wine Company doesn’t own vineyards, rather they buy grapes from nearly 100 grape farmers. And, they make a lot of wine to satisfy the high demand. Some may call this a quirky wine because of its unique blend, and I paired it with an equally quirky dinner of spicy chicken wings, French fries, and ratatouille. The wine is packed with full flavor and brings loads of ripe black cherries, toasted cinnamon sugar, and spiced pomegranates, too. Yes, it is a little sweet and leaves pleasant heat on the finish. For me, this is not a go to wine or a even a special occasion wine. Honestly, this wine is a lot of everything and perhaps quirky good with quirky food.
Second bottle of four paired very well with a spicy chorizo laden winter soup filled with veggies and spicy broth. It's clearly Zin driven, rich, dark and lush. Far from subtle, perfect for dishes like this--and big ass steaks as well.

Try this wine at a wine pairing dinner at the Grill at 41 N. in Newport Rhode Island. This wine is very good. Smooth on the intake and smooth on the finish. Very fruity. I would recommend this wine. They call it a Zinfandel but it’s really a blend

Dark cherry and berry fruit with some earth notes. Nicely balanced. Seems a little less fruit forward than a bottle I had some months ago, so the additional bottle age may be rounding it out a bit, which gives it more complexity.

Excellent Zin blend. This wine has a pleasant spice nose like black pepper or perhaps menthol? I taste concentrated Jammy Cherry up front with some nice acidity and a long finish. This is a highly enjoyable and cravable wine.

Just like a bottle consumed during the summer. This is one of the better Prisoner vintages I have owned. Drinking well despite still being young. I seem to be giving higher ratings to this one than is the case with other tasters. I confess to liking wines of this style......so maybe there is a subconscious bias.
Dark and brooding to the point of opacity. Moderate plus acidity and moderate tannins...very nicely balanced. Upon opening blackberry jam in front (transitioned to more cherry notes after 10 minutes) with hints of black licorice and black pepper in the long finish. Higher alcohol (15.5%) than I typically prefer (made me sweat a bit), which may make this wine harder to pair with some foods. That said, it's a lovely and quite memorable red blend and great for sipping sans food.

So, call me a whore but I run with the crowd in adoration of wines like Rombauer Chardonnay and The Prisoner "whatever," well, mostly Zin (though the Rombauer is starting to taste a bit unctious for it's own good). So it's My wife's birthday today and we opened one of our four 2019 Prisoner's to pair with NY Strips, to be grilled (my job!) about two hours hence. We started with some Caprese salads just now--we like having them a few hours early so we can actually eat the steaks. I popped and poured our Prisoner bottle saying it could help to let it breathe, acting as if we wouldn't actually sip some with the EVOO and balsamic dressed tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella. An obvious ploy so, of course, against all wine "rules," we drank glass one. It's 15.2% alcohol. Seriously. But is incredibly drinkable right now. Indeed, I wouldn't let it cellar for years. We got these for $37.50/per including shipping and I'm fine with that. They're $50 at COSTCO and $100 at a restaurant we (almost) went to the other night. What you get is a deep deep purple Zin blend, very smooth and fruit forward, any tannins are nicely resolved, even in the 2019. Wine snobs revile what is now it's mass production and the fact that it actually tastes good, but what the hell? Bring on those steaks...

I had bought a mixed case of bottles that looked interesting, then forgot about it for a while. A couple of months later, pulled out a bottle at random and popped the cork. Previously my impression of "Prisoner" wines? Gimmicky marketing, average quality. So, I was so pleasantly surprised by this bottle: a wash of sweet, ripe fruit, bright berries with a core of cherry. Very tasty -- and soft tannins providing some structure. Not serious, light but with depths, like a cru Beaujolais. This would be a very great wine for $13.99, I thought. But how much did I pay? When I looked up the sticker price, I was shocked and a bit disappointed. This is a young, fresh, fruit forward, direct wine that is tasty and ready to drink now. The second day, it lost much of its freshness that was so appealing on day one, and gained nothing more to compensate. Not built for aging.

I have been a Prisoner fan for a long time. This vintage is, to me, one of the best I recall. It is drinking very well right now......deep/dark/fruity without being over the top. The bottle was opened about one and a half hours before dinner started. I am surprised at how all over the board the cellartracker.com review ratings are. It is probably a preference thing......some drinkers like this style of wine and others just do not like the style.

A random purchase in an unfamiliar winestore. I knew that $36 was a bargain for Manhattan pricing so I grabbed it. It's maybe seven years since I last drank the prisoner. This was a bit like seeing an old girlfriend and thinking, "I cant believe we used to be together..."
The 15.5% on the label doesn't worry me because I enjoy high octane wines like Mollydooker's Boxer, or Martinelli's Giuseppe & Luisa. So I used to live in the Meatpacking District of New York - and in summer the smell of blodd and dead cows could be pretty offputting - and the Prisoner still reminds me of this - nose of plums mixed with rotting beef. It has fruit but it's less sweet than I remember. The funky meat thing overpowers everything else. Good tannins, enough acidity but the overall expression is less appealing than the wine I remember.
I enjoyed this, but the bottomline for me on this wine is value for money. I would prefer Juan Gil Monastrell, Mollydooker's Boxer or Venge's Scout's Honor in a heartbeat, and they are $10 to $24 cheaper. Dunno if the quality has deteriorated or my palate has developed. I'm gonna wait a few years before tryng this again.
Loads of berries and plum fruit. A bit jammy with a touch of sweetness. Very pleasant by itself or with almost any food. A bit over the top, but very easy to enjoy.

Yummy, totally modern, definitely sweet, slightly plummy. Not quite sure about the price point, but quality stuff for a palate that likes big, sweet, slightly plummy modern wine. Kitchen sink blend - like 439 different grapes. Ok, more like 5, but still...

sb Served blind I had a hard time identifying the grape. Obviously Cali. Made in a party wine style to be tasty, but not terribly good. On the reveal I was not very surprised, but rather disappointed, even for a wine meant to be in a forward style (and compared to prior vintages) NFS
Decanted for 90 minutes. Deep, almost opaque, ruby-purple. Nose is meaty, sweet jammy blueberry, vanilla, pepper, and herbal. Heavy bodied. Up front I am hit with a wide mixture of dark fruit, sweetness from alcohol and the residual sugar. Blueberries, blackberries, dark cherries. More to the jammy side, but not excessive. Velvety but grippy tannins. Everything here is in decent balance. Long finish that is herbal, cedar, and pepper. The finish makes a bitter hop turn at the end, which is unpleasant to me.
We decided to put the decanter on an ice pack to cool down some. Between the extra time decanting and cooling off the bitterness went away for me. Additional complexity on the finish developed at 2 hours with tobacco and leather. A little bit later, around the 3-hour mark, I got some black tea on the finish.
If I ever have another young bottle of this, decanting for 2-3 hours would be my starting point. I think a few years in the bottle might help it come together better, but this wine doesn’t taste like it will age well past a few years.
I was honestly surprised that we didn’t spend the night making fun of this wine like other mass market cult California wines. I was expecting a complete mess, instead there was more complexity and quality than expected. If this bottle were priced between $20-30, where I feel it should be at, I could totally understand the popularity and hype. But at its price point ($40 at Costco to $47 at Safeway), there are plenty of widely available bottles of Ridge, Bedrock, Ravenswood, Truly and other top notch Zin producers that are a step up in quality for half the price.

It's maybe seven years since
I last drank the prisoner.
