This was a real treat. There is a lot of buzz about how the earlier Pax wines don't age well, but has handled the last 12 years with flying colors. It is still dark and brooding, but it is not the enormous bruiser that I remember from its release. The wine is ripe but still fresh with dark berries, an uplifting floral element and a beautiful fresh saline component that I absolutely adore and commonly experienced in Pax wines of this era. The palate really emphasizes the savory elements of Syrah without an over-emphasis on the fruit, thus there is a really nice balance. The wine isn't overly complex, but there is tons to like here.

Figured this vintage was on the edge so made sure to decant for 6 hours. when first opened, the nose was mainly alcohol but when it was time to drink, the bouquet was much more pleasant with flowers and licorice. No surprise that the color was a deep purple hue. The wine was heavy bodied but supple. Although a bit grippy and the end, the wine drank well with a great roast and heavily creamed scalloped potatoes. If you have a bottle of this left, I would suggest you get to it ASAP, decant it for at least 6 hours, and make sure you have a big meal in front of you.

I opened this by accident, meaning to open the Emerald Pool 2006. Anyhow, much like the bottle I opened the night before but with slightly less fruit. I realized however that it really needed some rich food. When paired with a wild rice with leeks and pinto beans and yogurt sauce it excelled. The night before it didn't really sing with pasta and olive oil with broccoli and sun dried tomatoes. Neither bottle really paired well with cheeses either.

Dark wine. Tobacco and pepper highlight a bed of lush black fruits. Something makes me think of barbecue ribs too.......nose deep in glass........maybe that's paprika. Finish is nice, lingers, but not grippy. Virtually unchanged on day 2.

Our last bottle. The tannins have resolved to a large extent, although some still remain. What's left, after a two hour decant, is blackberry liqueur with a modest touch of oak and notions of smoke and iodine. While it can probably stay in the cellar for a couple more years without decline, I don't think there is much positive evolution ahead, either.

This wine is simply outstanding. Beautiful blueberry and lavender profile with a spicy formata. Such elegance and finess. This is why I drink wine. God bless John Donlan! Served with rack of LAmb. I recommend decanting this wine as it will throw a ton of sediment.

Nose: There is a real plush quality to the nose with dark red fruits, black cherries, smoke, blue fruits, and some spices with a touch of pepper. There is a plushness to the nose, but it's well balanced with a good fruit core.
Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity and chewy tannins. There is a plushness to the feel with dark red fruits, black cherries, black pepper, and spice tones.
Overall: This still has a youthfulness to it. The fruit isn't necessarily evolved, but it's well balanced. There is a long way to go for this wine.

This wine is still finding resolution as its' pure aromas of blackberry, smoke, lavender and menthol are still flavor masked by the huge power and tannins of this wine. Some time is still needed to integrate. The teeth staining power and color of the wine is still inky and dark. EG WineArchitect #Pax, #RhoneRanger

The good...Inky dark and glass staining color, extremely inviting nose. The bad...This is a very tannic and acidic wine which is the polar opposite of the extremely delicious 2005 version. The ugly...Decanted and consumed over two days with absolutely no improvement.

Blackish red. Very dense nose, mulberry spice, smoke, milkshake blueberry. Big, tannic palate, full bodied, fleshy, no holds barred, long inky finish. I really shouldn't like this wine but I do, because the fruit is very pure and honest and it's a great representation of its origins. Perfumed, haunting, full of purpose. Will improve for sure. 90++

nose: balanced and aromatic nose of dark red fruits, smoke tones, bacon fat, black cherries, with some pepper and dark berries. Good layering and depth as well
taste: full bodied with medium acidity and polished tannins that still show themselves well. Plush attack of dark red berries, bacon fat tones, pepper and a good dose of black cherries. The midpalate is still lacking a bit though
overall: this received about a 90 minute decant. Dark ruby colored, this comes off as drinking quite nicely right now. It seems ready to go, but can also go a bit longer and hopefully that fleshes out the midpalate a bit

Decanted for 1 hour. Dark, opaque, purple. Beautiful nose of plum, bacon, tobacco. Dense palate has delicious, clean fruit, smooth tannins, moderate acidity. Some nice depth to the palate, a hint of spice, and some savory meat components. Delicious and easy to drink. Probably at it's peak.

Black, opaque color. Very intense aromas of black olives, tapenade, dried meats, iron and warm black cherry fruit. Similar notes on the palate with a very juicy entry of sweet, yet cool cherry fruit. However when you think of leaning back and enjoying the uncomplicated fruit, the midpalate and finish kicks in with layers of olives, meat and iron. Huge intensity and concentration which seems to increase on the finish. Truly a wine of great personality, which guarantees that you won’t have a dull moment in its presence.

Had all the right components; inky color, good acidity and a hint of tapenade. Could be just too young, but generally lacked the wow factor for me. Big wine with good mouth feel, but had over two days and still missing the magic. Don't get me wrong, it's tasty for all that.

Popped and poured, enjoyed over 4 hours. Dark, dark dark fruit. First two hours, extremely primary, all fruit. At the two hour mark, the switch flipped and this became a dead ringer for Northern Rhone. White pepper, road tar, earth, minerality, roasted meat. Absolutely incredible, complex, delicious. This is the first time that I have enjoyed a Pax wine so young, as ordinarily I hold them for at least 5 years from vintage.

In the glass, dark saturated violet. On the nose, blueberries and currants. On the palate, the initial attack is a mix of pure blueberry and blackberry fruit, which was overwhelmed within a few seconds by ferocious tannins. I'm not sure I've ever had a wine this mouth searing on the back palate. Given that no other reviewer has had a similar experience, I wonder if something was off with this bottle. If not, I wouldn't touch another one of these for 5-7 years. The fruit is there, and there were brief hints of floral and mineral complexity, but this was a bruising experience.

Enjoyed with chef Tom Valenti's braised lamb shank recipe. (posted on the Web) Decanted for 3 hours upon recomendations from below. Color is dark violet..you could paint your walls with this stuff. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, and perfume. Flavors of blueberry pie (with the crust), cherry, and blackberry. No alcoholic heat or harsh tannins whatsoever. This is a very well made wine and our first exposure to PAX minus their summer rose. Drinking great right now. We do not drink a lot of domestic syrah so I give this 93 points on a non comparative scale. Will share remaining 3 bottles with friends as this one is a winner!

Tasted with a Relentless, Bonaccorci Star Lane and a Lewis Alec's Blend. This had the best mouthfeel of the bunch. I agree with all the reviews about blackberries and spice. I think it lacked some of the complexity that the Relentless and the Alec's Blend had but, they were blends. Definitely benefited from being decanted for 3 hours prior to serving.
