A very pleasant young Barolo that shows promise for further development. Didn't seem to need a decant, so popped and poured. 60 F. Lovely nose of rose, raspberry and cherry. Pleasant lively acidity, no noticeable heat or oak, tannins gradually developed a velvety texture with a bit of grip. Big cherry fruit on the palate, notes of tar, leather and an earthy minerality. Nice, lingering finish. Will try to hold off for a few years before I open my next bottle.

I think this is the first 2017 Barolo I have tasted. Beautiful and fragrant nose of fruit and mint. This was popped and poured, and the wine was very approachable early on, but with time, the tannin started to emerge. A solid wine, and one of the best values in Barolo that I am aware of.

Excellent QPR and a good option to pop and pour on short notice as this doesn’t really need any decanting time. Nice acidity to pair well with a pasta dish.

Clear ruby red with pink/orangey rim. Red cherry, red rose, rhubarb and cotton candy. Fresh, medium bodied, medium-high acidity and high tannin. Long candied finish. Needed 2 hours to open and more time in cellar for tannin to soften.

Delicious young barolo, big bouquet of red fruits on the nose and palate, the tannins weren't as grippy as I would've expected but they are still present. Very enjoyable!

Light to medium body, higher acid, with tart cherry that held up after an hour decant and an hour of drinking. Maybe this wine is too early or temporarily in a dumb phase but don't think so.

One hour decant. Bright ruby color, with slight rim fade. Anise, lingonberry, strawberry, underripe blackberry, chocolate malt, watermelon, and minerality on the nose. Smooth, slightly tongue drying palate. Firm, full tannins on the long finish.
Barolo is not really my style of wine these days, but it was the perfect pairing for our tapas at Alma in Minneapolis. Very Pinot-esque in weight.

100% Nebbiolo. Translucent ruby color, intense aromas of fresh cherries and other red fruits, tar and rose petals. On the palate, full bodied, succulent, very balanced, mouth drying finish. This vintage is ready to drink now but will certainly improve for the next decade. Good value Barolo as well.

Opened 2 hours before dinner. Did not decant. A terrific wine for the money, high acid, so should age well another 5 years, but was drinking beautifully now. Soft and round, but with with good depth and finish, this is what I imagine a more older styled (e.g. not made for the American reviewers ) Barolo would be.

Good QPR and a fair reflection of what Vajra is about as a producer. I think this was drinking fine now (like a lot of 17) but I suspect will improve with a few years in the cellar. Pretty solid value play barolo. Edges to my preferred style of barolo in its slight lightness and fine mouthfeel. Good perfume but not quite fully reflected on the p. Good enough length and complexity for the price. I didn’t think this was as tannic as some other notes suggest.

Sexy bouquet of all things raspberry, including preserves and liqueurs, strawberry, rhubarb, and rose hip, with orange marmalade and light petrol in the background.
On the palate, the wine tastes like it smells, with all the same sexiness, but does not fully align with the high quality perfume. The middle and back feature considerable tannin, yet the liquid that holds the tannin comes off comparatively thin. Also noteworthy: somewhat angular alcohol throughout.
These are minor drawbacks to an excellent and enjoyable wine. Tanninphobes beware, for the next five to seven years. The wine packs the substance to evolve over the next decade or so.

This could certainly use a few years in the cellar, but it’s reasonably drinkable now. Very pretty and true to type, while still leading with pretty fruit and and menthol tones. The tannins are there, but not intimidating. Wife says she picks picks up a very faint note of VA in the background. Regardless, given that many of the better Langhe Nebbiolo bottlings have caught up in price, you gotta really love the modest cost of the Albe.

Beautiful nose of English breakfast tea, pine forest floor, composted leaves and dried flowers. Medium-full bodied, this is quite structured with good acidity but only moderately tannic by young Barolo standards. As always, this is a helluva bargain and a real value in entry level, but serious quality Barolo! I first met the Vajra family over 20 years ago. They're a real treat if you ever get to meet any of them at an event. 92

Big tannic structure in this wine at this stage, needs a few years to mellow down. When it comes to the nose I found it somewhat muted even with a good amount of air. Seems shut down at this stage which I have not noticed yet with other similarly prices 2017 barolos. The only drawback is that I did not find other flavors beyond the fruit component. Hot vintages tends to push the fruit up in intensity vs more herbes, floral, tar components and this is possibly what is at play here.

Tighter than the previous vintage, more wrapped up in itself... red fruit, slight floral notes in the core, very thick, tar and dirt, finishes long on chew. Had next to a Langhe at half the price... this was the softer, prettier wine but just barely.

Medium ruby color. Small glass off the wine pairings. Lacquer, deep red cherry, herbs, fresh cedarbox, roses and moss as it opens more. The palate has that lovely cherry, herbs, moss and mineral notes; tannins are round and not aggressive. This gets better the longer it sits. 90(+)pts.

Decanted for 3 hours or so. This is drastically different from the 2016 in my opinion. Much less floral and elegant. There’s still some red fruit and tar, slight eucalyptus. On the palate it shows red fruit and structure. The tannins were ever so slightly bitter, it all just feels like it needs time to show its form. On the second day it was definitely better with fresher fruit showing and a little more integrated but still lacking complexity.

This took about two hours to open up. It was upfront and balanced with red cherries, raspberries, maraschino cherries, sour red fruits, licorice, roasted herbs, violets, and some tar. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and plush with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is a bit sneaky and it isn't of the mouth-puckering variety. This could use a few years to sort itself out, but I don't see it transforming into something *that* much better than it currently is.

On PnP, pretty nose, less floral than the ‘16, but with some earthy red berry and blackberry notes. No hint of alcohol. Palate is moth staining, darker fruited, tart, slight bitterness on the very long finish. Good balance with youthful tannins immediately appearing. Quite good now, will age well.

Vajra Horizontal (Millbrae, CA): Pale ruby-violet, no bricking; aromatic, berries, cherry, cranberry, a bit savory; palate is light-medium bodied, youthful medium-plus tannin, medium-plus acidity, medium alcohol (14.5%) which is well balanced, red to black cherry, slight rose; medium finish. A very nice wine in this price point, not showing warmth but showing a bit of fruit ripeness of the vintage. 88-89
