Cola, black fruit, brooding still. Silky mouthfeel with a bit of wet dog. Slightly bitter and dry finish. 2nd pour, redder fruit and more energised with sweeter fruit right through the finish.

Burgundy night at IT Paragon: Dark, seductive red fruit with a tannic backbone. Showing some development but drinking so youthfully so I thought this was nailed on to be a 2005. Impressively built but not quite ready for primetime.

7 years since I last tasted one of these - not sure it has budged much! Very deep ripe black cherry nose with earth, minerals and mint. With time a lovely mushroomy secondary note. Full mid-palate and lots of intensity and energy, with a long and grippy finish. After many years of being dumb this has become really terrific but it seems to be on a plateau and will only get better for a while.

Chambolle 1er Blends (Chicago + Zoom): Full and deep nose with earthy, herby black cherry. Still very young and fresh (served blind to friends and they believed it was younger than 2012). I think the concentration and youthfulness cloaks the emerging complexity of earth, mineral and dried florals that will pop as the fruit continues to mature and soften. Plenty of balanced stuffing to go another 10+ years.

Chambolle-Musigny "Declassified" 1er Cru Tasting (Chicagoland IL): This wine kept getting better and better with more air. There is nothing subtle here, this powerful wine shows so much rich/ ripe red cherry and berry with faint meat notes. Still some awkward tannins, still some fat fruit, but overall so much here. I would also point out that in a 12/07/99 flight, many thought this 1999 the youngest wine when blind. A wine I'd be thrilled to have in my cellar.

Very pretty crystalline red cherries, lots of acid, very fine tannins. Puts on weight with air, but never gets past medium-bodied. This vineyard is sometimes considered a baby Musigny due to its proximity but this wine doesn't have anything like grand cru power or intensity, especially in a big vintage like 99. Still is a very nice Chamoblle 1er.

4th of 6, pnp, rusty odd cork, travelled perfect level, substantially as previously noted, pinched, odd, but improved in glass, doesn't seem to have body to improve from here which is unusual for a 99. G+ (15.5).

As I understand, Clavelier’s plot is just above and wrapped around Le Musigny. This bottle is still quite youthful and primary. Perfumed aromas that are starting to show earth, clay and spice layering. Fresh and pristine balance with old vine intensity shining through. Great now and even better in 5+ years.

About 2 hours of air in bottle already. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark red cherries, dark forest floor earth, slight smoke, bits of leather. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium- tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries with underlying transparent red cherry sap, forest floor earth, smoke, stony minerality. Long finish. Very good quality. Reflective of its Chambolle roots, while still showing the individual plot's darker characteristics. Can still go another 3+ years but why wait. Drink up and enjoy, it will be satisfying.

3rd of 6, pnp, damp cork rusty on top, level low (1 cm down), atypical, slight taint which made it almost undrinkable on first night, seemed to settle and nice enough on 4th night showing weight and richness of the vintage if without the usual refinement, bags of life. Usually F+, this bottle on 4th night VG (16).

Decanted for an hour an a half. Still closed on the nose but there is no denying the finesse and the concentration on the palate. Such a pretty, layered wine, full of stuffing and opened at least 5 years too soon. Will improve significantly

No need to cellar any longer. Delicious fruit and good structure. The class of the vineyard and some forest floor shone through. Won't fall off the cliff overnight so I will be drinking my remaining bottles over the next year.

This is really nice. Dark red fruits and maybe a whiff of vanilla or similar on the nose. Palate follows with dark cherry fruit and a great balance of acidity tannin and minerality. Definitely in its drinking window, for this bottle at least.

Drunk on Christmas Eve with Beef Wellington. A beautiful nose of dark cherry and strawberry with emerging hints of earth and undergrowth; a rich and silky palate showed good length and weight. A nice 1999 which is just turning the evolutionary corner. Impressive ****+

2nd of 6 and though very youthful now beginning to drink well - darkish plummy red with little development, fresh black plums, some vanilla, very gamey, mid bodied, long and pure, classy fruit, some unresolved tannin, scope for improvement and long life. At present fine plus (18/20).

Like a lot of 99s, after being closed and quite gnarly for a long time, this is starting to open up. If not exactly exuberant it was an enjoyable drink, especially after an hour or so in the decanter. It is well balanced and the underlying material seems pretty serious so this could get interesting.

Burg Dinner At The Murray Casa (The Murray's): What the hell...this was the wine I sourced from Greg at Envoyer as my red burg selection for the meal and this wine showed bitchen. Bit stinky and barny but in no way off, just adds something to the aromatics. Blue fruit, fresh, hint of stable and juicy. Delicious, open textured and I think this wine will go a lot longer. Too bad I couldn't go back and buy another one of these.

Another bottle. I couldn't resist.... Took it's sweet time to show much. After an hour or so, beautiful pure red fruits - bing cherry? Not a lot of complexity either on the nose or palate, but excellent red fruits with super acidity to back it. Only medium-bodied, but with good depth and a little width too. Fine tannins still swimming nicely with the fruit. Drinkable at a push, but plenty of time needed after opening. Still plenty more to come here. Will be very, very good in time. Drink 2015+ for some more complexity, when it should comfortably merit several more points.

A wine that was extremely fresh, bright and energetic. There’s a hint of mineral and earth underpinning lovely sweet, floral laden fruits. It shows impeccable balance and finishes very direct with great cut.

A very deep color, at first reticent on the nose and palate as if quite young; but with the sense that something really interesting lay in there somewhere. As the wine aired, it fulfilled this promise with layer on layer of flavor. The nose blossomed into dark cherries, a bit of forest floor and mushroom, and something like violets. The palate moved toward a harmonious balance of delicacy and power, with amazing complexity of secondary flavors in addition to dark red fruit -- velvet and lace around a rock-solid core.
Served with a decadently rich mushroom risotto (including some pheasant stock, no less), just the right match. This was a very special wine, and would be worth seeking out.

Interesting performance here. The first day this showed beautiful red fruits on the nose - strawberry and bing cherries as well as oak spice. However, the complete lack of definition on the palate was disappointing. The second day some blacker fruits made an appearance as well as notes of soy sauce, creamy oak, and earthy mushrooms - it was also much sweeter on the palate and displayed much greater length and much better balance. This will be a beautiful wine in several years; I caught it in an in-between stage at around 89 pts.
