From the nose and initial palate I would guess with certainty this comes from Napa. Huge amounts of ripe plum and blackberry followed by cassis. Dense but fresh with plenty of cooling minerals. Really structured and clipped on the finish but not overly tannic. That element will require years to work out. I enjoyed but struggle with finding origin/place here.

Background: Group of 5 Family members tasted 5 young 2020 Bordeaux, all from different AOCs. Wines Tasted: Clos Fourtet, Château Clinet, Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Château Pontet-Canet, Château Brane-Cantenac.
The Clour Fourtet was the universal least-favorite of the night, agreed without hesitation by all of us. Nothing wrong with it per se, and we would have been fine if served the wine, but compared to the others the flavors were incredibly muted and light. Tannins were harsh, and it came across as very acidic. None of us were able to call out any particular flavors. Given the pro reviews/scores one must assume this was shut down already and/or will improve significantly with age.

Scoring at the top of my range from my barrel scores, this is a majestic vintage for Clos Fourtet. With stunning levels of concentration, intensity, purity and sensuality, the wine paints your palate with layer after layer of black and red fruits. The velvet-drenched finish seals the deal with its seamless, mineral driven finish that builds, lingers and expands. Drink from 2026-2060.

The 2020 Clos Fourtet shows a fresh, clean, black-fruited, plummy nose which is dense and dark but not particularly yielding today. Surprisingly tannic on the palate, biggish but not hot, lowish acid yet not flabby. It will be interesting to see how this evolves.

Grosses Terroir, grosser Wein. 2026-2050+ (Verkostet am 8. November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch
Attraktive Frucht mit vielen Facetten. Ein Mix von roten und dunklen Beeren. Edler Toast. 94-96

2027-2045+ (April/Mai 2021) vvWine.ch

Dark garnet in color, the wine gets your attention quickly with its licorice, smoke, dark cocoa, chalk and plummy aromas. Pure silk and velvet on the palate, with a fabulous sense of purity in the fruits, lift, length, richness, concentration and minerality. This is clearly a top vintage for Clos Fourtet that will age for decades. The wine was made from blending 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% ABV. 96-98

Tasting through some 2020 EP samples with local merchants, so only short impressions. In general the vintage is ripe and plush but not excessive. The right bank examples were sometimes marked by high alcohol. Some of the lesser know Crus from Medoc on the other hand benefited nicely from the sun. TN: Lots of discussions on this wine. I was in the camp where we foudn it clearly over-ripe with lots of prune, kirsch and plum. 89-?

Very deep, with a bright red/purple rim Touch stewed on the nose, very ripe ‘blue’ fruit and some vapour… modern, plush.
Sweet attack, juicy and plump, good weight, attractive creamy oak base note; lovely ripe juicy mix of blue/black/red fruits, very fine grained tannins. Long, elegant and stylish.

Near opaque Deep nose, very cool with a violet-tinged edge, a sense of diluted minerals and a broader floral mix with super definition.
Beautiful satin-like texture, some cream and fat, this has excellent weight and intensity, and feels very luxurious with a wonderfully clean perfumed finish.

UGCB tasting Bordeaux 2020 Walkaround tasting so in general just short notes (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam.): Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with dark berries and beautiful oak. Same on the palate, herbs and spices, beautiful acidity, sticky tannin and a great length.

The 2020 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 03/06/2023 (Amsterdam): Very flowery in the bouquet with a gentle dose of mint, expressive, but at the moment lacking some depth; however a beautiful wine with recognizable tannins (at the moment).
