Bought at auction out of curiosity (birth year). Good ullage. 43 years old and the cork still popped slightly. Served at 12C. Gold colour, slightly cloudy. Small amount of fine bubbles but acid makes up for lack of fizz. Oxidative. Needs time in the glass. Honey and fortified (port) on the nose. Long palate. Over the hill but still interesting and enjoyable. I wouldn’t recommend deliberately leaving them this long.

Dark amber in color with fine mousse. Christmas toffee apple, madeira, aromatic spice with a touch of coffee. Potentially slightly on the decline but what a wine! Superb!

Purchased at auction. Capsule in tact. Cork was dried out. Popped and poured. Enjoyed over 3 hours - not much change from beginning to end. Gold in color. Oxidative/nutty, a bit of caramel, some honey, very minimal effervescence, but quite fresh and some tang on the back end. Long long finish. For light bubbles: pour one glass, rest, pour another. Bottle showed in line with others, per an experienced taster.

Everything you could do want in a 40 year old Champagne. Honey, brioche, yeast, with a fair amount of bubbles. Delicious! Also, our 2000th bottle consumed in CT!

Awesome champagne with great energy for its age. Powerful with high acids and very concentrated with wonderful aged flavors of caramel, clove and toasted bread. Finishes sublimely complex and deeply satisfying as it hits the sides of the tongue. Obviously a bottle in great condition. Wow!

Brilliant bottle. Wild honey, beeswax, ginger, and dried marigold on the nose. Showed much younger than it is. Certainly the best 78 DP I have ever had. Some mousse, tart palate with soft citrus finish and tart goldenberry.

A real treat to try this, and many thanks to the guy who brought this. More fun and interesting than good though. I guess you really have to like this very mature style of Champagne to fully enjoy this.
This is fully developed, but still with good complexity. Reminds me a lot of a mature, old German Riesling. Honey, nougat, rubber, petroleum, browned butter and candied oranges.
Pronounced, high acidity with very little fruit left to balanced it up. Medium body, a medium+ intensity and finish.
More of a sniffer than a sipper.

Dark amber colour Wonderful nose, bags of autumn flowers, chestnuts, caramelised apricot tart, spice and smokiness. Seriously complex nose but palate not delivering the same depth of flavours. But very pleasant the same caramelised apricot tart, chestnut and mushroom flavours with creamy texture. Touch of oxidation and little short but very nice DP.

Light hazelnut brown. Still very much alive with good acidity and great body. Paris toast, roasted hazelnut, toasted coconut, a very little bit of sherry. Very complex. I was very happy with it. I think it opened up over time however mine didn’t last that long.

This bottle seems a bit advanced with little bubbles left, slight medeira notes, but palate still quite fresh with slight toast and nuts, a bottle with better condition should be super.

golden and showing more age than I would have expected out of magnum......limited effervescence....drinks like a white burgundy with lemon custard, hazelnuts, and a small amout of almost burnt sugar.

From Magnum: Lovely sweet creamy nose showing off surpisingly ripe apple pear aromas with honeysyckle and light hazelnuts. A rich fat ripe mouthfeel with plently off bubblies that keep wine seemingly fresh. Real quality wine with long rich impressive finish. A real mouthfull of wine. Clear group preference versus 1985 Krug magnum and 1986 Alain Roberts magnum. Still drinking very well with very little sign of its age. A fine bottle.

From 750mL the colour is a light rose showing some obvious maturity Quite a persistent stream of pinprick bubbles on first wiff there is a burnt note, not sulphur taint...with time, telltale notes of yeast, Needed to wait for this wine to warm up a bit at which point the palate gave notes of caramel, fresh apple, orange rind, hazelnut but there was still this burnt taste to it. Still plenty of acid left. There is a some lack of lift on the finish though that is a bit dissapointing....and an overall lack of complexity on the backend given its age and pedigree. Having said all of this, very interesting wine though not one that I would go crazey to find.

Our Wedding Night - NYC: similar taste characteristics to the bottle tasted in 2006. The bubbles were there, but muted, and a blind tasting would have led to more old white burgundy guesses than champagne. Not overly tart, but had lost most of its weight. However, held up to the lobster tartlets and the wild mushrooms beautifully.

Christie's Dinner at Charlie Trotter's (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago): Lots of bubbles upon pouring, but they disappeared quickly leaving only a few weak tracer streams of carbonation. Remarkably light in color. The rep from Christies (from whose cellar all of the evening's wines were selected) said he wanted to "show how old champagne becomes like old white burgundy", and he was spot on. It had some interesting baked fruit notes (apple and pear), and some autumnal spices, like pumpkin and nutmeg. Ample acidity has haelped the wine maintain freshness. The wine brought out the smokiness of the trout and was the better pairing.

Sherry, nut fruit, and botyris on the nose. Palate showed some oxidative note with reasonable amount of freshness for its age. Enjoyable.
