  • Well my best friend and his wife had twins yesterday so I needed something to open in their honour and of course we are in lock down so- what is in the cupboard? Figures it was about time to broach this one. Lovely medium bodied nose. Still very fragrant, even after being open a day. Classic Tempranillo fruit. Clear oak, but it has subsided into a gentle supporting role. A bit of leather too, with just a touch of varnish but not detracting. Very fresh on the palate, even freshening up with air. Juicy red berries. A bit of savoury complexity. In excellent shape. Drinking very well now, but no rush to finish up.

I typically have mixed views on Ribera del Duero (a lot of over-ripe, soupy wines with too much oak and too many dollars in the price tag) but this is frankly lovely.

  • Varm, søtlig frukt også her, delikat vaniljepreg, pent integrert eik, bjørnebær. Fyldig i anslaget, behagelig sødmepreg, svake kryddertoner.

  • Opened to breathe for 2h and enjoyed throughout. Lovely roses, backing spices, faint oak on the nose. Big round juicy red fruit, cut by oak and tannins, acid. Disjointed at first, but upon arriving at the restaurant it was decanted and 30 minutes later it was fully integrated, round and luscious. Served alongside a '98 barolo, this Spanish beauty showed more boldness and bright red fruit, and was paired with my osso bucco. Alas, my last bottle.

  • Decanted for Christmas dinner. This is a big brooding wine, lots of cherry, heat, and acid. Initially tart and disjointed, this pulled together after about an hour of decanting. With roast pork.

  • Tasted at Emirates Lounge Dubai: maybe not enough decant time, but the acidity was too dominant and the palate lacks punch, I wish I had in my cellar, because maybe in 20 years this can be great?

  • Decanted for two hours before tasting. Dark purple core, pink rim. Displays a lovely bouquet of black fruit, dried figs, leather, exotic spices, sweet pipe tobacco, caramel and cedar-wood. There’s also a pronounced streak of saline minerality adding to the complexity – much like the smell of seashore. On the palate the wine comes across as ripe and concentrated without ever feeling overdone. Though the tannins are beginning to dissolve, balance is never threatened thanks to a healthy dose of refreshing acidity. I’d say this wine is just entering its prime drinking window, and should stay there for at least another five to six years. Pricy, but certainly top quality through and through.

  • Monthly Tasting Group HWS #101; Worldwide: High altitude vineyards. (by EvA): Beautiful and complex, mature bouquet with dark forest fruits, licorice, herbs and spices, autumn forest, blood, chocolate and beautiful oak. On the palate beautiful dark berry fruits, sweet spices, meaty, some autumn forest and beautiful oak. Beautiful and soft acidity and round tannin. A beautiful and harmonious wine which is completely ready now, but no hurry at all.

  • Perhaps my problem, but I found this wine rather disappointing. It started quite tangy and over the course of the evening never opened up or transformed into something richer. Restrained and nicely balanced, but somehow closed and one dimensional. Better in a few more years?

  • Cupo granato. Bocca scura, potente, sorprendente nota fresca, molto sapida,. Finale lunghissimo

  • From memory: Opened late New Year’s Eve. Drinking this was complete waste of money for obvious reasons, but even in my impaired state this failed to impress. Felt tight and quite unforgiving. None of the other dinner guests expressed any particular fondness for it either. I’ll refrain from scoring and let my last bottle rest for at least another five years.

  • Les gôuttes de vins d'Espagnol (La Rochelle Aoyama (Tokyo)): OMFG this is great!
Maturing colors, still very red. First whiffs sported celery and fennel, but soon enough evaporated, leaving us with the refined earthy tones and industrial rubber that you also find in ... as Xavier A describes below. A nose worth pondering! My very patient wife actually asked me to stop smelling and start drinking :-) ...and YES! this is as fantastic as she described it, a gem! Superbly refined, elegant, full bodied, polished and shiny w/out edges... Complete, layered, complex, larger-than-life, made the other wines shrivel and finishing with long tones of sophisticated French oak, industrial rubber and fantastic earthy notes with cedary tones and dill.
Absolutely a winner today, but will also reward patience greatly. Definitely has the future for it. Will keep developing for maybe up to 20 years more! We need to get some!!!
First glass from newly opened bottle @ wine-dinner at 1 star La Rochelle Aoyama (Tokyo).

  • Beautiful, balanced, clean fruit. Integrated oak providing roundness and body without being overtly in-your-face. Great balance, great flavours, very nice from beginning to end. Long finish. Would love to see a bit more tertiary flavours here, and then this would be phenomenal. Will certainly last another 15-20 years (if not more), so perhaps these flavours will develop. Expensive, but worth the money!

  • New French oak with notable char dominates the nose, which smells of sweet spices and cocoa. In the mouth it is medium-to-full-bodied and offers rich, mixed purple fruit, backed by quite a bit of tannin. This is accessible and drinking well, but has plenty of room to improve as the oak integrates and tannin resolves.

  • Appearance: Bright and clear, deep ruby with garnet rims and legs
Nose: Clean, medium (+) intensity and developing aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, savory, liquorice, chocolate, smoke,
Palate: Dry, of medium acidity, with medium tannin which is soft and velvety in texture. Medium alcohol and medium (+) body, with medium intensity flavors of black cherry, plum, prune, smoke, leather, cocoa. Medium length.
Conclusion: Very good quality Spanish Tempranillo wine showing ageing characters. A fairly intense and complex nose with good balance of both primary, secondary and tertiary aromas. Reasonable intensity on palate, it has delicious ripe fruit and also fairly complex flavors. A reasonable length. Ready to drink now and has potential for further ageing of another 4-6 years.

  • A private lunch (Restaurant De Hoefslag *, Bosch en Duin, Netherlands): Aged in French oak rather than the usual American oak and the difference in style is very clear. Reminds one of a great Pauillac from a warm vintage. Velvety texture, cedar, warmth, succulent ripe fruit, touch of tar, playful and elegant, not a rough edge in sight, such finesse, great length. Magnificent. Happy days.
