  • Same bottle as Nutty08. Decanted and enjoyed in a Grassl cru over the course of several hours. Extremely dark in the glass, and fairly open aromatics, the best thing here was its silky, polished texture. Violet florals and dark fruits are present. Not overripe and the alcohol and acidity are very well balanced. To my palate, the oak was overly dominant, so much so that another taster and I aren’t sure we would have settled on Pinot blind, with so much makeup concealing varietal character at the moment. I’ve had older DRC a few times and this was an entirely different animal young. Although this isn’t shut down or remotely closed, I think drinking it before the oak has had time to integrate is a shame. It has massive potential though.

  • First young DRC of significant portion. I was a expecting a brutish wine given the reputation of '20, but this was all polish the elegance. The oak notes do dominate but well balanced. Elegant floral highlights with violets and other dark profile notes. Palate was concentrated, but not heavy and tannins were quite fine and polished. Clearly has a bright future but won't be shy is saying this was crushable now. But does show it's terrior? That'a a harder question, and probably the best reason to let is rest.

  • Tasted at Lenkerhof in Lenk, Switzerland. Decanted approx. 1.5h but could easily have gone longer. Highly versatile with an immense variety of flavors. Beautifully layered fruit profile with red berries of raspberry, elements of rhubarb, but also darker cherry notes. Floral perfume wafting out of the glass. Adding both sweet and peppery spice, meaty notes, chocolate, earth and leather with time in the glass. Also herbal notes of dried estragon and oregano. Sumptuous with an incredibly soft texture and plenty of fresh acids. Tannins are round and polished, seamlessly integrated but still add structure and mid palate depth. This is already complex and a wine so easy to fall in love with, even if clearly too young.

  • Mittleres Rubinrot. 2026-2044, 95 vvPunkte

  • Outrageously complex nose. It has a little bit of everything, perhaps slightly darker fruited than the 17 and 19, but no sur maturé in sight.

The palate is significantly darker than those two vintages, though with air, that characteristic gentle citrus finish takes over, rendering the wine very harmonious.

  • Cheeky bottle commiting infanticide at a restaurant - reasonable price so why not... Good from pnp, very immediate, ripe but not overly so (19 GE worried me last year in terms of sumaturite not here). Dark fruited, slightly grippy in midpalate but still very accessible. Side by side RSV 20 the Eche was drinking more immediate while the RSV held more hidden qualities / complexity in store. Both very good and should be lovely in time.

  • 2020 Romanée Conti Vintage Horizontal: All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted, but we had enough time to follow each wine for over an hour in the glass, which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) Without question, 2020 is a good vintage for the DRC. Similar to what I experienced in Bordeaux, the wines are less hedonistic and seductive than in 2019 (or 15/18), but have a little less substance. However, they shine with their purity of flavors, their lower ripeness and, above all, their superb freshness and airy texture. Classic. 2) The quality of the tannins is on a good level, but many of the reds will need time to soften. Today the Corton, RSV and RC were the only reds that did not show some hard edges. 3) La Tache (95pts) and (as always) the RC (93pts) were tight, even tighter than usual, only hinting at their potential. The top two reds, as in previous years, were the ever-improving, delicate RSV (97pts) and the deep, powerful and concentrated Richbourg (96pts). 4) The whites: The second vintage of CC (97pts) is outstanding (and my wine of the tasting), with lots of flint and toasted sesame notes and superb freshness and less overt weight than the Bonneau du Martray. The Montrachet (91pts), usually my favorite, was a bit underwhelming vs expectation, lacking the usual substance and poise, but it may just be in a dump phase.

TN: Intense nose with dark berries, fresher blue fruit, some spices. Not fully open like the Corton but still quite enchanting. On the palate this shows lots of fresh forest berries, from blue to black and some brighter red berries. Spices, earthy notes and crushed rocks complement the picture. Others found the fruit a bit too prominent and powerful. I found the balance quite good. Quite elegant and airy but with still a bit of hard edges which will mellow away in a few years. Superb freshness and good length. 94+pts

  • Weekend in Michigan with Wine; 8/5/2023-8/6/2023 (Asian Spice House - Buchanan MI): Small glass from a bottle opened the prior day. Lots of very firm, very backward red fruit with lots of substance, just not showing much accessible pleasure yet. Very good potential from 2030 (maybe 2035). Thanks for sharing, Mike!

  • +90 vin

  • Difficult to assess as heady aromas of black char, pepper, Asian 5 spice, and black cherry were so open and user friendly, while in the mouth this was seemingly closed and quite firm yielding very little nuance. A nice lighter weight mouth feel and uplifting brightness likely provides a long development. 92 today with judgement reserved, but upside seems likely.
