  • I kicked things off with the Fess Parker 2004 Syrah, this was a bit of a wonky wine that showed smooth cherry, hints of white pepper, dried raspberries and plums while on the finish Christmas spices lingered amongst dried fruit. It was showing its age, but unlike a few years ago when I tasted it, the wine seemed to be dealing with the alcohol better

  • This is a wine that was once described to me as "panty remover", for the simple fact that it had a whopping 16.4% alcohol ... that's massive and one of the biggest I've seen in a still wine. I aged it to see what would happen to it and I can honestly say I'm not totally disappointed but neither am I super thrilled. From the get go it was a little on the prune-y side, though it did also have a nice hint of plumy-ness to it - so it seems to be going from plumy to prune-y. There are also touches of vanilla and chocolate with a big sweet middle palate (that's the alcohol talking) - that prune-y-ness seems to be hanging out in the background as if it is ready to jump out and fully consume the rest of the wine ... the finish shows some licorice all-sorts notes and there there's the imbalance due to the rampantly high alcohol. Turns out I have a couple more bottles and I'm thinking I'll want to drink both within the next year before it becomes nothing but sweet stewed prunes. Here's one time I am hoping for bottle variation.

  • This might be one of the worst wines I've had in a very long time. Sour & generally nasty. Did not appear corked (synthetic cork) so not sure what the issue was.

  • Big blockbuster, however, would strongly recommend decanting this one for upwards of an hour, as this continued to open up throughout the evening. Big berry, currant, cassis, spice, and long hot finish which mellowed with time. Great wine. Drinking now; but a few years might be fun.

  • Full-bodied red with loads of blueberry, raspberry, and Asian spice. Finishes off rich minerals. Alcohol was a bit high at 14.5%, and a little too jammy. It's a crowd-pleaser though. Drink now until 2013.

  • WOW, what a bomb, not a wine for everyday and similar notes to the Santa Barbara Winery Syrah we had from '01 in that we shouldn't like this, but we do - Dark, full bodied with notes of blackberry, blueberry, pepper, spice and vanilla on the nose, decent structure, but a bit too hot (16.4%!) on the finish, hedonistic, nice QPR (89 Points).

  • This is only my third bottle of wine for serious tasting/drinking, and my first syrah. Overall impression of the wine was very good. Color was deep red/purple. I decanted for about a 1/2 hour before taking a sniff and sip. The first sniff brought berries and chocolate. The first sip was very smooth on the front, fruity on the mid, and very "warm" on the finish. Not hot like the two cabs I have had, just a little warm. Also not as tannic as the two cabs. Let it sit for another hour and it opened up considerably. This was a very velvety wine. The chocolate really showed through and the berries (dark currant, blackberry, and blueberry mostly) were much more pronounced. The finish lengthened a bit, but I wouldn't call it long. There was a hint of oakiness in there, but not very strong. All said and done it was quite an enjoyavble wine.

  • Seriously tight on opening. Needs at least an hour before drinking.

  • Popped and poured. Dark color. Nose of brown sugar, molasses and a bit of smokey bacon fat. On the palate there was more dark sugar along with a touch of mintiness. Finish was a bit short. All in all a solid effort. Would purchase again.
