  • Alongside Bachelet bourgogne. Very similar colors, but totally different noses. Lots of kirsch and spice on the Lignier, more dark fruit, some smoke and herbs on the Bachelet. Both opened up nicely in the glass, but the Lignier proved the more expressive, elegant and appealing with very good balance and nice lift. Loved the strawberry fruit that came out after dinner. This was a very cuddly wine, a lap cat in every way. The Bachelet waddled around in circles for an hour or so, at one point smelling a bit like the tip of magic marker, but eventually got on track. A little brooding, it did start to show some layers and class later in the evening. I very much liked its weight and structure, both quite impressive for a bourgogne. I don’t think there’s much upside from here, though I suspect it will hold for a while and might smooth out. Exciting for both these wines to be showing so well at 15 years old, even in a stacked vintage like 2005.

  • Just lovely. On the nose: soft perfume, wild strawberry, cocoa powder, game, musky soft leather..fantastic complexity. On the palate, excellent acidity, more musky strawberry, game, good density...so elegant. Attenuated tannin on the refined finish. At peak.

  • Spot on. Beautiful nose with loads of crushed red fruit, some herbs, a hint of funky earth and a framing of coffee. On the palate, excellent acidity and just waves of red fruit. Very sappy finish, which showed rather dry and austere at first, but became more generous with time open. In a fantastic place.

  • Dark ruby. Seems to have just entered an attractive drinking window, with time ahead of it. Lovely dark fruit aroma with black cherries. Medium body with initial tannins that withdrew after 60 minutes of air. Round, elegant, has depth. Lovely now but will improve. The 1-hour decant definitely assisted the wine in opening.

  • Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Dark core with dull garnet rim; deep plum, dark cherry, plush, deep, round, polished nose, good nobility, vanilla, leather; palate is tighter than nose suggests, sour dark cherry, a good bit of tannin, floral finish; quite good but seems like it still needs more time.

  • A pure somewhat simple but elegant delight. Nice breeding, a fine vintage and basically ready to consume. Images of a nice equestrian farm with medium cherry, earthy tones, not pretending to great complexity but with finely grained texture and a good follow through. Adequate smokey ring and a true Morey terroir.

  • Very bright, juicy, racy fruit. Almost cru beaujolais-like. Seems to have opened and drinking well right now. Not a whole lot of complexity or refinement. But nice, pretty simple, fresh stuff.

  • DRC Tasting Group (Cafe Veloce): Tasted blind. Restrained nose, with mint and light cherries. Dark purple in the glass. Full bodied with good fruit, and a medium length finish. Definitely tasted young.

  • good quality. but seems more diluted and less complex than before. tasty fruit, but lacking in secondary characteristics, particularly with regard to terroir. closing down for a spell or on its way down for good?

  • I am glad I decanted this wine, it needed about an hour of air to open up a bit. While not terribly complex, it was very pleasant with the chicken we had off the grill. The question is more about whether the wine is worth $40. For me, its more like a $20 wine then a $40 wine.

  • Good, but tighter and less expressive than last bottle. Shutting down?

  • Enjoyed at Cafe Campagne with Duck Confit and Cassoulet. MMM, baby! This Villages AC was a somewhat disappointing second to a much more enjoyable, and fruit filled 2005 L&A Lignier MSD 1er which was, as expected, simply much more stacked and packed. Damning with faint praise, this was a nice, serviceable Burg perhaps a bit closed right now with 5-10 years upside. Hopefully the next bottle will be more impressive.

  • 91-92. I was tempted to rate this higher, but hesitated only because the circumstances were not optimal for evaluation. Cherry, plum, blackberry, smoke, baking spice, perhaps some chocolate. Some minerality as well. Initial whiffs of funky earthiness that I wish hung around longer. This is quite ripe and round. Even more than the Chambolle Musigny, this reminds me of a Cali Pinot. But, thankfully, although there is some oak influence, it's not overdone. This does not have the herbal notes, nor quite the bite that the Chambolle possessed. It's deeper and richer, and possibly less acidic. Not particularly elegant or complex, but certainly delicious. Tannins are well integrated. They're evident, but quite ripe and pliant as well. Nice, concentrated, fruity finish. Should have decanted longer. After 2 1/2 hours, it really opened up and filled out. Will probably improve, but with proper decant, no reason to not enjoy now.
