  • Alongside Bachelet bourgogne. Very similar colors, but totally different noses. Lots of kirsch and spice on the Lignier, more dark fruit, some smoke and herbs on the Bachelet. Both opened up nicely in the glass, but the Lignier proved the more expressive, elegant and appealing with very good balance and nice lift. Loved the strawberry fruit that came out after dinner. This was a very cuddly wine, a lap cat in every way. The Bachelet waddled around in circles for an hour or so, at one point smelling a bit like the tip of magic marker, but eventually got on track. A little brooding, it did start to show some layers and class later in the evening. I very much liked its weight and structure, both quite impressive for a bourgogne. I don’t think there’s much upside from here, though I suspect it will hold for a while and might smooth out. Exciting for both these wines to be showing so well at 15 years old, even in a stacked vintage like 2005.

  • Just lovely. On the nose: soft perfume, wild strawberry, cocoa powder, game, musky soft leather..fantastic complexity. On the palate, excellent acidity, more musky strawberry, game, good density...so elegant. Attenuated tannin on the refined finish. At peak.

  • Spot on. Beautiful nose with loads of crushed red fruit, some herbs, a hint of funky earth and a framing of coffee. On the palate, excellent acidity and just waves of red fruit. Very sappy finish, which showed rather dry and austere at first, but became more generous with time open. In a fantastic place.

  • Dark ruby. Seems to have just entered an attractive drinking window, with time ahead of it. Lovely dark fruit aroma with black cherries. Medium body with initial tannins that withdrew after 60 minutes of air. Round, elegant, has depth. Lovely now but will improve. The 1-hour decant definitely assisted the wine in opening.

  • Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Dark core with dull garnet rim; deep plum, dark cherry, plush, deep, round, polished nose, good nobility, vanilla, leather; palate is tighter than nose suggests, sour dark cherry, a good bit of tannin, floral finish; quite good but seems like it still needs more time.

(Lignier Lucie et Auguste Morey St.Denis) Deep cherry-red colour, almost a little purple. Wide aromatics with slight white-pepper spice over a deeper but reticent black cherry. Excellent intensity of black cherry fruit, super acidity to balance and tannin that is submerged in the extract. It’s a powerful combination for a villages wine, a little mineral too but it’s also very linear and obviously closing-in on itself - faint black chocolate shows on the finish. Super villages but be prepared to wait.

(L.A. LIGNIER MOREY SAINT DENIS) 2005 Burgundy Dear Friends, When Hubert Lignier’s estate was divided, it left an opportunity for the next generation to improve on the already fine quality that this house was known for (Lignier was made famous in the US a few decades ago by an unknown wine writer named Robert Parker jr.). Through a complex web of inheritance, trial and tribulation and family tragedy this new estate was born and the 2005s are shockingly strong. This is essentially Lignier’s 2005 stable of wines with a new label designation of L & A Lignier (Lucie & Auguste Lignier). I cannot recommend this set of wines highly enough and I’m sure you will find them to be complex and ponderous examples of their vineyard sites. They’ve been highly acclaimed by Allen Meadows, David Schildknecht and others but the beauty of the wines is in their transparent but powerful expressions that should reward those that cellar them or open them early to enjoy their youthful fruit. I’m torn to even print the scores as most of you can certainly look them up on your own, but I know you will ask so I’ve done so below. Let’s give this set of wines the credence they deserve without score-chasing - please read the verbiage for a better indication of the style. All are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for relative value at the top end of each category in 2005 All are directly from the source with perfect provenance - NOT VIA THE GREY MARKET All are EXTREMELY LIMITED - please let us know your interest at your earliest convenience (this is not Lignier-Michelot or George Lignier - this set may be listed as Hubert Lignier or just Lignier in the WA or other) 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Bourgogne Passeoutgrains (WA/NR)(BH/NR) 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Fixin “Les Champs Vosger” (WA/NR)(BH/NR) (this is really lovely) 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Morey St Denis (I really like this wine) 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Gevrey Chambertin “Les Suevrees” (WA/NR)(BH/NR) (this should be long-lived - lots of depth and mineral-rich, elegant but powerful fruit - very hard to find) 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Morey St Denis “Les Chaffots” 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Morey St Denis 1er (VV) “Romain Lignier” 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Chambolle Musigny “Les Baudes” 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) Gevrey Chambertin “aux Combottes” (this is not George Lignier) 2005 Lignier (Lucie & August) “Clos de la Roche” Grand Cru Please give us your maximum number of each and we will allocate accordingly Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Burg5901 Burg5902 Burg5903 Burg5904 Burg5905 Burg5906 Burg5907 Burg5908 Burg5909
