Still comfortably sitting on it’s drinking plateau, this is my next to last bottle from a case I bought on release. I’m still getting that note of balsamico that I mentioned previously and this is seamless on the palate. Good stuff.

The colour is medium garnet suggesting moderate age. Forward dark red fruit; black cherry, hint of balsamic, black olive and earthy and leather notes. The palate is near perfect harmony, no tannins to speak of, but no lack of structure; the sweet fruit and acidy play each other well. And the length, just goes on and on. It has been a while since I enjoyed a Chianti this much.

Still dark as night. Nose lifted a bit by a little VA. Features black walnut, typical of Rancia, some Luxardo cherries and a hay-like grassy herbal note that I don’t recall seeing in this wine before. Very brooding and masculine, though the tannins have really rounded out. Only moderate length to the finish and an otherwise really nice wine. A Chianti for Montrose lovers. Very good, but not among the best Rancia. From 375ml.

I'm giving this 90 points for lasting this long. The fruit is very muted. The acid is present, but not quite overwhelming. I wanted to love this bottle and maybe my expectations got the best of me. At $50, a good value. Any more, I would have been seriously disappointed.

This wine is drinking beautifully right now; still fairly dark with a charming blend of cherry, smokiness, and earth on the palate. Very nicely balanced, no hint of any age.

Medium red color. Aromas of red and black cherries, smoke and a touch of licorice. Ripe, nicely structured fruit in the mouth with very good depth and length. The tannins have softened with 15 years of bottle age but in many ways a still youthful wine.

Seamless on the palate, but doesn't have the same presence as that '96 Poggio delle Rose I just tried. The nose is nice, also with a smoky note to it that is different, yet similarly attractive, than the one on the PdR.
I probably would have liked this better if I had tried it first, as following the PdR did it no favors.

In a nice spot, likely early in the drinking window. Florals & a bit of herbs on the nose with dried cherry tones. Medium bodied with nice structure behind it, medium-length finish.
I enjoyed this. It's a great Chianti, but doesn't quite hit the Brunello-level quality as it does in most vintages.

Evolved red berry, leather and wild herbs make this a complex and food friendly wine. I served it with a home-made, all local beef stew, and it was a perfect companion. It has plenty of life left, but is drinking very well now.

The nose was highly expressive, showing dusty cherry, dried flowers, cedar, and brown sugar, with hints of moist soil and undergrowth. On the palate, I found soft textures, with a lighter than expected weight, followed by flavors of dried strawberry, plum, and a bit of spice. It finished dry with lingering notes of cocoa powder, tart red berries and a hint of floral and fruit decay, which detracted from the experience slightly, yet this was still a very beautiful wine and completely ready to drink.

CT tells me that I last opened a bottle of this wine in 2009, and I found it to be oaky. Not so currently. This showed vert well. Like many 2005 Tuscan wines, it is an open, softer wine, drinking nicely now. This showed a mellow, soft palate, resolved dark plummy fruit with a light dusting of dried herbs. This is soft and ready to go. Paired well with a monstrous Flannery porterhouse. Pia and Jimmy both loved this wine. In Sag Harbor.

- Brick color with slow forming legs and aromas of cherry, cedar and tobacco. It's balanced and has flavours of licorice anise, cherry, fig and dusty with a medium/full body. Round texture with a medium finish - Decanted 4 hours, the wine needs to open up. Rich dark fruit and cola on the finish.

Opened some 2 hours before - needed if. Lovely on the nose: raspberries, prunes, cooked cherries, old wood, tobacco, vegetal. Plenty of tannins still, with similar flavours as on the nose, but somewhat thinner. Plenty of finish. Overall a very good wine, which in my view will develop over the next 2 to 5 years.....not too sure any more than that.

Plum and earth on nose. cherry, plum, oak and some earthyness palate-wise. A nice wine drank too early but still can tell it's not at the level of 2004 in terms of complexity and length. Also slightly more wood influenced aromas coming through than in better vintages.

Drank beautifully as a pop and pour, with nice mineral, floral, mushroom and leather notes. Smooth, nicely textured across palate into finish. Note overly complex, and not with the verve of better vintages, but like the 05 Montervertine, is ready to drink right now.

4 hours decant and the nose is finally starting to open up with nice cherry, leather/tobacco and floral hints. Luscious mouth feel that transitions into prominent dusty tannins. Dark fruits (ie plum) and more cherry with a touch of cedar that then evolves into a long lingering earthy finish of earth with hints of cinnamon. medium body with medium acid. Solid 91 points and have to believe room to improve with a few more years.

I was really surprised by how oaky this wine showed. Creamy oaky in texture, with lots of wood notes on the palate. Honestly, I could not drink this on the first night; on the second night it was only slightly less oaky. I don’t recall the ‘04 Rancia being this oaky at this young stage. Back to the cellar for five years, and hopefully the oak will integrate.

If this is rather darker than I'd expect from a traditionally-made Chianti Classico Riserva, and if the vanillin on the nose says "barrique," this is nonetheless transparent and gorgeous, particularly with significant air. First, I get a snootful of violets. The sweet cherry fruit on the attack demonstrates beautiful lift; the flavors then resolve into really nice citric bitterness, with dusty red earth, serious tannins, and a silky mouthfeel. Although it's already complex, I'll wait a good five years on the next bottle for the tannins to resolve.

Swordfern Wine Tasting #4: Sangiovese (Paul and Kelli's: Seattle, WA): This was a nice bottle, but at the $40 price point, I need more oomph. Tasted blind along with 3 other Sangioveses, this was the second most popular, losing out to a Washington state wine $15 cheaper. Gorgeous blood-red color, and a bold, plummy nose, with hints of menthol and heat. On the palate, red fruit and a touch of cinnamon hold out through a nice, long finish. Still, I expect more brightness from a Chianti Classico; this was a bit too dull for the price point.
