Lovely nose of candied fruit, dusty wood, hints of buttery cinnamon pie crust, yet with fantastic notes of brine and olives. Great dimension. On the palate comes thick dark velvety ripe fruit, slight espresso. Fat in the mouth, yet with just enough tannin to sing through. Finishes long and lively, yet with the caress of a warm smokey fire.

Another great bottle. Tons of olive tapenade filled the room upon opening. Heavy in the mouth, flavors of olives, smoky meat, red fruit and spice. Long, satisfying finish. No heat, just smooth and delicious. If scoring 92-94.

Purple center with a violet rim. Red-fruited with raspberry and cherry coupled with earthy notes and cloves. Medium-bodied with good acidity and a silky mouthfeel. Initially, it was not as giving as expected, but with air, it opened beautifully. Overall, I enjoyed watching this wine evolve throughout the evening and provide ripe fruit and spice as well as a touch of structure for good measure.

Decanted 4 hours prior to drinking. If this, my last bottle, is a true representation of this wines development, then drink them quickly. The once brash fruit was withered leaving only dry earth and tannin in its demise.

Dark purple/red color. Explosive nose of raspberry, boysenberry, sandlewood, and spice. The palate is hedonistic and follows the nose perfectly. This is medium-bodied with excellent acidity and apparent tannins on the back end. The finish is long and rich. Overall, this is an outstanding example of what can be done with grenache. There is tremendous fruit and richness but with some edgy tannins to make it interesting.

Beautiful nose upon opening, but a lot of heat. Given 30-45 minutes, the heat disappeared and left a wonderful bottle of wine that was an absolute steal at $12 from the state monopoly store on-line sale. Black fruit (cherry licorice), chocolate, tobacco, smoke, wild flowers - this baby has it all. Continued to evolve in the glass. A fantastic FFP. Buying more. If scoring - 91-93.

30-45 minute decant. A really lovely grenache! A great strawberry and rhubarb profile with a strong floral component on the mid-palate. Sweet, soft, and well integrated tannins with a smokey, cocoa, and creamy hint on the finish. This is in a great place right now. Outstanding.

Minimal heat for 15.8% and not as glycerine-y as expected...deep dark fruits with a pleasant, fine tannin grip. Enticingly smokey nose, but with a clean and pure palate. Black raspberries, anise and charcoal...I need more!

McPryce Myers L'Ange Rouge Vertical: Supplied the bottle described by Phredd in his notes. Seems '07 lacks the earth, spice, and "secondary subtlety" of the '06 or '08 while being just as bold as the '09, which is the latest release as of this tasting note. However the '09, being younger, seemed more "refined" and liqueur-like; the 07 just seems over the top and alcohol dominated as compared to the other vintages tasted in this '06 - '09 vertical. Sound but unbalanced, Overall Rating B-.

NC Cindy Tasting. Decanted a full 12 hours before being transported to the event. Slightly darker than the 2006, this is still funky, with an overwhelming sense of black pepper on the nose. The alcohol, even after the extended decant, is wildly powerful. On the palate, though, there's lot of blackberry fruit, but very little in the way of secondary flavors. I was expecting some depth, but the flavor is medium-short, and there's just not enough here to consider it to be an above-average effort. The average CT value is $30, and I just wouldn't want to pay that for this wine.

Well integrated and almost smooth as can be - yet there is this slight drying/gripping on the tongue issue that leaves me quibbling. Only bot I have so no knowing if time heals that.

15.8% ABV. Translucent dark garnet in the glass. Ripe cherry kirsch nose with some background garrigue. Medium full bodied with a sweet attack of juicy red cherry and raspberry fruit. For all this is a big hedonistic, relatively high alcohol wine, I still like the way it plays with some foods - the open knit bright cherry fruit just works sometimes.

Understated Grenache that shows off spicy red cherry and promegranite with rich chocolate cascading throughout. Glowing deep red color, full bodied and rich from the get go. Soaring nose of chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry jam, smoke, vanilla, five-spice and herbs. Big, sweet and high toned palate is bursting with red fruit. 15.8% ABV. Translucent dark garnet in the glass. Sweet garrigue and kirsch nose. Medium full bodied with a sweet attack of juicy red fruit. A little bit hot in the finish, but this is really delicious in an over-the-top ripe vintage Chateauneuf kind of way.

A big wine, no doubt. Lots of red fruits and oaky spice on the nose. Medium-full bodied on the palate. Good dose of oak and jammy red fruits on the palate. 15.8% alc.. Rather sweet; really pushes the limit of being too big, but doesn't quite get there.
Wine, skiing, and snowboarding; 2/20/2010-2/26/2010 (Telluride, CO): 15.8% ABV. Dark garnet, almost opaque. Sweet kirsch nose tinged with garrigue and a hint of lavender. Rich sweet cherry fruit with a retronasal nuance of lavender again. Tasty. More red fruit in profile.

15.8% ABV. Popped and poured. Black garnet opaque in the glass. Initially showing a bit of alcohol, but with a little air more of a lavender and garrigue note. Medium full bodied with sweet kirsch fruit that shouts new world Grenache in a nice way. -- vinturi'd into a decanter immediately before first taste -- -- tasted non-blind over a few hours --
NOSE: initially: cranberry, lavender, and some mapley oak. cranberry eventually turned to cherry-pie, and what seemed like a hint of menthol crept into the background as well. Pretty straightforward, not very complex.
BODY: fine particulate matter; garnet-purple color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: oaky; concentrated fruit - very concentrated -- a bit much for me; straw-raspberry fruit; again, straightforward; not funky; a bit lacking in acidity; lush, soft mouthfeel; hides its 15.8% alc. surprisingly well, although a slight alcohol flavor does start to emerge as the wine warms to room temperature; 40-45 sec. finish; very new world style. I wish this were a bit "prettier," as I think Grenache shows its best when it's not this concentrated.
B: 50, 5, 11, 16, 7 = 89
EDIT: NOSE and TASTE have noticeably "darkened" since yesterday -- maybe a black licorice note on the NOSE now, and an Aussie leather/black licorice thing on the palate. Part of me leans towards upping this to 90, based on today's tasting, but I will stand pat with my 89, as the alcohol does seem to have a stronger presence today than it did yesterday.

Popped and poured, enjoyed over two nights. IMHO the best of the last three vintages, without question. Fresh, clean vibrant cherry and red raspberry liquor flavors with dark fruits adding another dimension Superb Grenache herbs fill in between the fruit. Mouth coating, chewy tannins and the slightest traces of heat on the finish. As I've said before, traces of heat work for me with Grenache. Fantastic wine and just as clear and vibrant on night #2. Definately ready to drink. I love what they are doing with Grenacheand white Rhone varietals.

It appears this will be yet another successful year for McPrice and his "L'Ange Rouge." This wine has concentrated fruits on the roasted nose and is a very big wine. It’s medium-full bodied, and is awfully tannic at this point in time...will be very good.
