  • Wine was more youthful than I expected. Think the blend may have been more Cab Sav than Cab Franc. Regardless, fruit forward, ripe cherries, leather and sandal wood and soft integrated tannins. Drinking well and suspect there are still legs on the drinking window. 5+13+17+8=93

  • Yummy stuff! Slightly more juicy and more lush than the last bottle I had 2 years ago.
    Drink now.

  • The first vintage of Paleo that was a Bordeaux blend; this was 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted alongside most of the Paleo vintages from 2013 to 1993.

Pretty lightly translucent dark cherry red color, still surprisingly youthful for the age. Ripe, yet still quite dry and savory nose with aromas of blackcurrants, some savory wood, light leafy tones, a little bit of ripe red cherry and hints of aged Bordeax like tobacco and cigar box. The wine is dry, firm and structured on the palate with moderately full body and flavors of fresh blackcurrants, sour cherries, some spicy bitterness, light meaty or even gamey character and a hint of tobacco and savory wood. The mouthfeel is still pretty robust with high acidity and ample, assertive tannins. The finish is equally robust, dry and grippy, but the juicy, vibrant and persistent flavors of sour cherries, fresh blackcurrants, some roasted spices and hints of leafy and earthy tones keep the aftertaste very balanced and harmonious.

A very impressive, imposing and structured Bordeaux blend that still feels remarkably youthful and powerful, even after 17 years after the vintage. Overall this is a lot more tightly-wound, structured and even somewhat aggressive if compared to the Cabernet Franc wines that followed this vintage. A wine that would perform flawlessly if put as a ringer among Bordeaux left-bankers in a blind tasting. It will take many more years for the wine to reach its apogee and resolve its tight-grained structure. Expect the score go further up with age. Very highly recommended.

  • Ruby red. Pretty complex old world bouquet of funky brett and aromatic fruit. Acid plus and full bodied with secondary and tertiary earthy flavors. Medium length.

  • After reading ronte bello's note I checked my bottle and to my surprise, it is 100% Cab Franc. I left a tasting note in 2014 stating that the Cab Franc (at 30%) was really showing. Little did I know then that it was 100% CF. Anyway, this was an incredible bottle. Old world style as you would expect. Cherries and earth dominate with some ash, tobacco and more cherries. Fabulous!

  • Interesting that my bottles are 100% Cabernet Franc (see photo I added). Could be the US distribution.

Bricking garnet. Somewhat funky/old wine bouquet. Lots of concentrated mouthwatering bright fruit on the front with some tartness/tannins on the finish. Nice complexity. Medium body. Glad I have more.

  • Lovely wine, still bright, young and energetic. Nose is dominated by Cab Franc notes, grilled bellpepper, grilled herbs, plums and blueberries. On the palate surprisingly fresh, wonderful acidic backbone, juicy forestfruit. Perfect use of oak, very supportive. Chalky tannines, medium to full-bodied. Very very good!

  • wonderful supertuscan. This CS and CF blend in far beyond best expectations. Mavellous nose of ripe red berries and light oak, rubin-garnet colour at the eye. The mouth is juicy and round with a series of hints from subtle red fruit to chocolate and red berries to leather and sweet dried fruit. "Drop dead gorgeous" just to mention a previous tasting note. Unfortunately it is hard to find another blend like this (Paleo is now made of CF only).

  • Didn't take detailed notes. This was a classic, subtle version compared to other vintages. Still very elegant. Cab Franc (30%) is very prominant and very delicious.

  • Nose: still a little fruit but more like stewed fruit, almost tomato. Also stewed sweet fruit, and some secondary notes like leather. Some herbs as well. Nose: nice tartness. The leather makes it through onto the palate. Hint of unripe strawberries and stems. A little dusty.

  • The last of CS for this wine (blend is 70%CS/30%CF), having gone to 100% CF in '01. This is absolutely spectacular juice. Striking nose of black cherry, cola, licorice, and wild herbs. Beautiful and elegantly textured. Very sexy yet quite complex. Wood is not shy here, but all is forgiven. Really a strange hybrid of Bordeaux tastes wrapped in a Burgundian package. While I can't sat this speaks of Italy I can say this is drop dead gorgeous. Really came alive with the lamb kabobs. No one would not love this! Drinking perfectly at the moment. I now see why all the hubbub about Paleo.

  • Thick, tasting of tobacco and black licorice. Not my flavor profile, and this wine just felt heavy.

  • Was ready - fully developed - earthy, ash, and oak flavors - drank well with pesto pasta & hard cheeses. Didn't finish as crisp/dry as I'd like. Nice wine overall.

  • Elegant and Bordeaux-like, but maybe with a touch more oak and that classic Italian acidity. Holding up well and probably has several years left.

  • Second Annual WLTV Forum Philly offline (Sonata Restaurant, Philadelphia): The aromas on this wine are gorgeous- red & black raspberry, red & black currant, herbs & a bit of cocoa. The palate, however, is unbalanced- lots of tannins and acid, that hide any fruit that might be there.

  • per quello che costa è un vino buonissimo non eccessivamente profumato ma molto corposo

  • I truly expected a much more from this wine given its pedigree. The wine was decanted for a short period. I found it was a bit closed on nose, but it showed a rich full body with a deep dark opaque color. There is a huge earthy, vegatative component to this wine with flavors of cedar, herbs, and tobacco. Good complexity with blackberries and dark fruit that start to emerge as the wine aerates in the glass. There is a solid tannic backbone present that has had time to integrate with the fruit. This is a great food wine and paired well with both rack of lamb and pork loin. Nice, but average finish. A very good wine, but not exceptional as anticipated..

  • Drank with dinner, no detailed notes. Showing very strong, near it's peak IMHO. Linear and persistent, nicely balanced fruit and secondary flavors held in place by well integrated tannins. This is tasty and interesting.

  • Served a hair too cold initially, but quickly warmed to proper temperature. Still reasonably dark, with some bricking at the rim. On the nose, there are mostly veggies, with clear green pepper smells, plenty of herbs, and lots of earthy tones. There is very little fruit evident; at most a touch of plum. On the palate, the wine is still very herbal, but then rises to an impressive, tannic, and complex mid-palate. The fruit is subtle and very much in the background, but this is still very well balanced. There is surprising acidity, making this an excellent food wine, and it paired perfectly with a complex lamb ragu. There is a touch of old apple flavor, indicating that although there is a still respectable amount of tannin left, this wine will almost certainly not improve further. If you have this, drink it now.

  • Delicious wine with lots of varietal characteristics but with a unique and interesting interpretation. Foremost is delicious fruit and velvety mouthfeel but this wine is not plump. The fruit is dark with notes of cherry skins and cooked strawberries. Co-mingling with the fruit are bits of minerals and hints of stewed vegetables. Interesting and delicious. A dreadful match with peperoni pizza.

  • Color: Cloudy ruby
    Nose: wet suede, plum, anise
    Flavor: WOW!
    Body: full, bit tanic
    Balance: complex, rustic
    Finish: long, dry
Summary: An excellent Tuscan Cab Franc

  • Popped and poured - classic Cab Franc nose, with lots of earth and vegetal tones. On the palate earth, minerality, violets, and lots of blueberries. Good tanins and acidity. all in all really well balanced and beautifully complex. Solid mid-palate with a long finish that was still there 5 minutes later. After the first glass and a half we left this for a couple of hours, but when we came back it had lost all the earth, herbal and fruit tones, and it was just tanin and acid. Real shame as we had half a bottle left.

  • Dark ruby coloring, opaque. Aroma of figs, dark fruit. Blackberries, plums. Earthy. Full bodied, quite tannic. Long finish. Decanted for a couple of hours. Surprised tannins weren't a little smoother given it was 10 yars old, and decanted. Nice, though. Served with Boeuf bourguignon, which it complemented well.

  • Very, very, obviously 100% Cab Franc. A heady, powerful nose of vegetation; dark fruits; good, dark, muddy earth; and a complex melange of spices I have no hope of decoding. On the palate, it gives a very aged feel. Richard pointed out that it's incredibly similar to a well-aged Bordeaux, and probably one many years older than this - indeed, it's quite similar to an '88 Grand Cru I had some time ago. Besides a good deal of sediment, though, it still looks good for its age, with an inky core and clear rim. Blueberry syrup, loads of Cab Franc vegetable flavors, a little Syrah-like bacon in the background, and cedar (spice box, as Richard sardonically put it). The midpalate and finish are backed with a bracing acidity, and there's still significant but well-integrated tannins on the finish suggesting this could last several more years. Altogether, a very well-made bottle, although perhaps not the uniquely Tuscan perspective on Cab Franc I was expecting - there is some minerality, but not a distinctly Italian terroir. For $50, this is solid stuff; I'm not sure it's a great value at the retail of $80, though.

  • Great color. Nose: A little swampy and a little earth. Taste: Very tart. I get minerals and strawberries on this wine. Fairly consistent with previous note but showing a hair better.

  • Dark granet hue. Blackberry, sage, olive, and tar on the nose. nice minerality with firm, but integrated tannins. Lean mouthfeel with a lasting finish.

  • Still very powerful. Did not have time to decant but will open the next bottle at least 90 minutes prior. Great tannins, can go many more years.

  • Very nice bottle, smooth, good with array various foods, hard to detect fruits, but their are present.

  • Color is really nice, cloudy, thick. Nose: I get a tomato note, and some swamp or mustiness. Also a hint of sort of a minerally sweetness. Taste: Very minerally. Almost salt on the back. Some acidic tartness and maybe a hint of red fruit on the midpalate, but not really any fruit note. Definitely still tannic on the mouth feel, but drinking fairly well. Definitely nice wine, but don't know about the QPR...

  • This is a great wine. Herbs and tomato on the nose like a good Cab Franc should have. A wonderful and unique bottle. The only downside is that at $90, the price tag makes it a once in a while indulgence (at least for me).

  • Lovely subtle earthy nose (wife said "fish", I didn't get that). Some Cab Franc funk, which I enjoyed. Smooth, if somewhat plain on the palate. Long balanced finish with smooth, well integrated tannins.

  • This wine really opened up after decanting for a day.

  • A smooth drinking, opulent and sexy wine with balanced layers of complimentary flavors. Nose and palate of dark berries combined with a spice, pencil lead, cocoa, pipe tobacco and vanilla medley. Smooth but big lingering tannic finish. This wine screams to be served with a red pasta dish or season red meat. While drinking wonderfully now, it should provide pleasure for several more years.

  • The color of this wine is a very deep ruby. The nose has scents of caramel and dark ripe cherries and kirsch. The taste is very tart with plenty of acid and tannin mixed with red and black cherries. This wine needs more time in the bottle. Try it again in two or three years.
