This bottle reminded me why I do what I do....this was a humble bottle 10 years ago which evolved into a complex beauty. Dried cherry, cedar, licorice, menthol all hit the nose and palate, and the once rough structure has turned much softer and supple. This wine is a joy, a great example of old world Piedmont that paired so well with homemade meat tortellini.

Drink up, needs decanting due to lots of sediment, medium heavy bodied, balanced, good fruit, smooth tannins, lots of flavor and complexity, nice structure, drank with stuffed pork chops, would drink again but won’t find it.

It was best after a 4-hour decant. Craisin-strawberry flavors came to the forefront. Also, while still dry, the tannins hit a sweet spot at that time. Good acidity throughout, which made it a good food pairing.

Decanted for two plus hours, drank two glasses with dinner, vacuumed sealed and finished on the second day. Still requires a long decant but also displayed a huge tannic structure both days. Signs of bricking, displaying a slightly cloudy crimson hue and medium plus body. Black and red fruits have taken a back seat to the earthiness, bitter dark chocolate and dry leather notes. Still enough tannin and acidity to support future cellaring, but the chewy tannins and fading fruit will limit enjoyment going forward. Paired with spicy beef bulgogi but the wine seemed to overwhelm the food. Definitely seems to have regressed somewhat over four plus years....

About an hour and a half in the decanter at this point. Lots of baked plum and prune flavors; these weren't present in the first bottle about 6 months ago. But, this aged-fruit component goes pretty well with the other savory, meat, and leather flavors. Some black cherry on the finish now, too. Yes, not a great Barolo, but I still like it and think that it has many good qualities.

Leather and cherries on the nose. Light and lively on the palate, with leather and tar and cherry cola on the finish. Simple and quaffable. Perhaps a good pizza wine, but not a great Barolo.

Huh, 89.9 average score from 48 reviews, as of this writing. Maybe this review will put it over the top. It took a couple hours in the decanter for the wine to open. Color is rusty fuchsia. Red fruits, tobacco, and something savory hit the senses. This has turned into a lovely mid-life wine (not as good as the 2001, though), so I'm not at all disappointed that I have another 5 bottles. Still plenty of tannins to keep this chugging along for many years, but it's very nice now. I opened this tonight out of curiosity, but am now opening a 2006 Bordeaux blanc to go with our pasta salad. This Barolo needs some meat, or something savory, for it to really shine.

A nice venerable Barolo. PNP was initially tight with no fruit. about a half hour in glass, notes of black fruit , chocolate and tobacco lingers with a tannic finish. As we go another half an hour the tannins soften and the fruit evaporates. I would drink up over the next six months to a year. I also would avoid decanting as this wine must be watched because it changes rapidly over an hour or so.

Raspberry, some earth, a little blackberry and plum. Very smooth and more elegant than I expect from a Barolo. Took 45 minutes to open, and faded after 1 1/2 hours.

Initial nose was typical barolo, cherries, dark color. mild tannins, overall closed. It did not open up over the next several hours and became more muted, especially with the nose

Opened and decanted right from cellar so at ~55 F. Fruit was noticeable during decanting - bright berry and strawberry. Nothing earthy about the nose even at this point. More of a garnet color - typical of older style barolo - not deep, dark purple. Very dry but not overly tannic to me, though still on the young side. The fruit was wonderful with other notes I can't put my finger on. Had some left over and tasted just before writing this and it has not lost its fruit but it has softened a bit. I look forward to future bottles.

Restrained nose of berries and tobacco. This is a dry Barolo with nicely intertwined fruit and balanced tannins on the finish. The bottle was well structured and quite pleasing with lamb.

This, to me, is a definite "old world" Barolo. It's as dry as can be. I love the structure and the balance, but the flavors are a bit stewed for me and muddled, but I'm suspecting this could be a slightly off bottle. Threw a decent amount of sediment; decant.

Nearly two years to the day of the last bottle. Pop and poured. This smells of fantastically fresh smashed up strawberries. Juicy and delicious smelling, expressing undertones of minerals and sweet graphite. Lovely smells. The palate begins tight already, showing some of that sweet strawberry fruit and a very slight bit of mushroom funk, but as this is held on the palate that strawberry flavor remains even though the tannins begin punishing and take over. With heavy aeration a really interesting ash component is dominant. The finish shows tar, bitter tannins, strawberry, tree bark, quinine, and perhaps some herbal notes. Very bitter throughout though it has mellowed in the last two years. The problem is this was quite delicious for only about 15 minutes, and then locked down hard. Going on three hours it tastes nothing but bitter and metallic. I bought this at the low tariff four years ago to keep my hands off the better 2004s, but this too is acting like it'll need well over a decade to come around. 91 for the first 15 minutes, mid 80s thereafter. I think this needs an additional 5 year+ hold.

Deep dark purple color, full bodied texture. Decanted for approximately 30 minutes. Immediate nose of dark strawberry, some tar, and faint rose. The nose becomes more pronounced as the wine opens. Palate of ripe strawberries, rose water, and cherries. The tannins are very dry but not overwhelming if you tend to like your wines dry. Dark chocolate finish that lasts. Very nice Barolo that should evolve for many years.

Tasted upon opening and then decanted for an hour. Nose: Herbs. Dirt. Moderate intensity, but interesting. Taste: The tannins are in check on this wine, still present but very much in the smooth/ready-to-drink feel. I'd say the mouthfeel is very nice at this point. However, this wine is just not really doing anything. There's a touch of an acidic sharpness on the approach. The finish is short. Maybe the tiniest hint of currant on the back palate. Brought to my sister's on her 32nd birthday. Popped and poured. The nose is fairly exuberant, showing very deep, dark strawberries, almost strawberry pie, a hint of marshmallow, light chalk, and generally very appealing. Midpalate attacks with intense, very sweet, truly delicious dark red fruits, almost candied in nature (like a very soft strawberry gummie thing, like GUSHERS candy) with big tannins building. Tannins are massive on the initial finish, which shows grapes, seeds, and big time strawberry and grape juice. Tasty. Delicious today but the tannins are a bit large; I'd say almost out of balance with the fruit; hoping the fruit will hold as the tannis fade... but wow, still tasty. Definitely a fairly forward Barolo, approaching the modern side of things, but still tastes of Barolo. Nice. Interestingly, as this sat in the glass over an hour it tightened up and got more tannic, less fruit. Pouring a new glass revealed more fruit again.

Color is transparent garnet. Nose of flowers, strawberries, pine, and raspberry liqueur. Palate is light to medium body, traditional Barolo style with smoky cherry, red licorice, and clay. Finishes with gripping, chalky tannins. Plenty of acidity, bordering on astringent. Flavors are primary at this point. Pleasant, but should improve with cellaring.

Nice classic color (light red with some brown). Very floral on the nose (roses) mixed with dirt. Medium to full body on the palate. Strawberries and cherries dominate the mid palate. Beautiful light red color - could see my fingers through this wine. Lovely smell of strawberries. Beautiful palate of the same - although on the midpalate, transitioned nicely into some vegetal components I couldn't place and some nice tannins that transitioned well into a tannin/fruit finish. Delicious wine.
