1970 Château La Lagune

  • Oh my this is a surprise. Very tertiary but absolutely delicious nose of black cherry, mint, leather and herbs. Knockout.

Needs a bit of air to fill out but not much. Attractively sweet, with fading tannins but just enough acidity to prop everything up. Not super-concentrated, but feels fresh rather than dilute.

Wish I had some more of these. One of those wines which reminds me why old Bordeaux is so good.

  • From a good looking bottle, with a base neck fill. This was good and highly drinkable, but it lacked complexity and an extra gear. There is some nice fruit still and some silkiness from all the years. Simple, pleasant, ready. 89-90 pts.

  • In the opulent echelons of the wine world, the 1970 Château La Lagune stands as an aristocrat amongst vintages, embodying a refined sophistication that resonates deeply with the palate of the discerning upper society which was surprising considering I reached over the Mouton’s and the Screaming Eagles to nab two bottles for Christmas dinner. Unveiling this treasure, I embarked on a sensory journey that transcended mere tasting, delving into an experience steeped in history and elegance.

As a purveyor of life's adventures, I've trekked across landscapes both vast and serene, seeking the untamed beauty that resonates within nature's embrace. This wine, reminiscent of my explorations, evoked a sense of rugged charm, much like the untamed wilderness of the Yukon. Its robust character, enveloped in layers of complexity, echoed the Aurora Borealis that danced across the Yukon skies—a tantalizing spectacle much akin to the kaleidoscope of flavors unfurling upon my palate.

Music, the soul's melodious expression, finds resonance in the symphony of flavors within this vintage. Each sip unfolded like a crescendo, awakening memories of chords struck and rhythms embraced. The 1970 Château La Lagune, with its harmonious medley of spice and bell pepper, orchestrated a symphony of taste—a serenade reminiscent of my fervor for composing soulful ballads.

This wine unfurled memories of a love affair kindled amidst the ethereal glow of the northern lights in Dawson City. There, in a rustic cabin, beneath the celestial display, this vintage was uncorked, marking an evening where our hearts intertwined amidst the cosmic ballet above. Its rich, enticing notes mirrored the warmth of our connection, each sip a reflection of our shared intimacy—an indelible moment encapsulated within the essence of this wine. Yes, I was but 16 and she was a mere 32 but proud was I to have embraced my English teacher in such a way.

Yes I know what they call it these days, but in my days it was a blessing…..

The 1970 Château La Lagune, a tapestry woven with threads of spice and bell pepper, also whispered tales of innocence and rain-kissed reverie. Its robust structure, interlaced with the pad of a young maiden's foot in the rain, transported me to moments of unadulterated purity—each element contributing to a symphony of sensory delights.

In conclusion, this vintage wine transcends the confines of mere liquid indulgence. The 1970 Château La Lagune, with its evocative flavor profile, serves as a vessel—a conduit to memories of exploration, passion, and the ethereal dance of love under the northern lights. It is more than a wine; it's a conduit to a tapestry of experiences—a testament to the intertwining threads of upper society's sophistication, an adventurous spirit's quest for the unknown, the rhythmic heartbeat of musical passion, and the embrace of unforgettable romance.

  • Xmas eve dinner 2023: decanted for approx. 3 hours (cold storage); dark crimson color with some light brownish reflections; started with malty notes in the nose but soon gave way to an intense bouquet of strawberries and red cherries; noble feathery texture with a mild balancing acidity.

Excellent bottle in classic claret style. Mature, but no signs of weariness, still going strong.

  • Bouquet explodes out of the bottle immediately. Very tertiary but not at all musty. Clean notes of leather, soy sauce and coffee. Really very delightful.

Palate isn't quite as good. Attractive sweetness, but tannins are feeble and drying a bit. Finish is just OK.

If the taste matched the smell this would be a world-beater.

  • remarkable for a fifty year old wine, particularly the colour - not much of anything on first opening but it did improve in the glass over the next hour or so - gentle wine with just a hint of fruit and stuffing - lovely!

  • What a treat to enjoy this 50 year old bottle. Had trouble with the cork getting it out (durand), and had to push the bottom of the cork through, and decant/filter to remove sediment. Gave off a bit of barnyard on the nose, lots of dried fruit, candied fruit, old leather. Amazed it was not bricking as much as I would have thought for being 50 years old. Still dark red. Fruit is way long gone, but still enjoyable in this phase.

  • From Magnum. Fill into neck. Almost no bricking. Still solid color to core. Lots of tobacco on the nose upon first opening. Lovely red and black fruits in soft velvety layers with some tobacco and dried herbs. Not the longest of finished but a very lovely wine. This Magnum still had another 3 to 5 years of solid form left in it. Add an extra point for ageworthiness.

  • Peter's Birthday Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): The sole Bordeaux on the night, I thought this was very enjoyable indeed. The nose was classic left bank, with fragrant notes of cassis and graphite- pencil lead almost - along with a bit of sous bois and little twists of green leaves and bell peppers. A lovely nose. The palate was rounded and juicy, with notes of cassis and graphite carried on a bed of citrus acidity in a nicely defined finish, where there was just a little curl of smoke. Neither the deepest nor most complex, but this was a lovely drink. A classic left-bank, drinking at a mature peak.

  • Still tasting great at almost half a century. Fruit was strong, color is bright, and there is still great life in this wine.

  • This was a brute. Plenty of fruit here, but mouth puckering tannins. The bottle was standing upright for several weeks before carefully decanting -- yet, the sensation of drinking was wine full of sediment (even though it was crystal clear). Still enjoyable, but somewhat foursquare overall.

  • With a neck fill, this shows a lot of life for a 1970 and, luckily, this particular example isn't as brutally austere as some wines of the vintage can be. Big, beefy, blackcurrant, old oak, mineral nose. Lots of aromatic volume but a little monolithic. Iron and wood spice on the palate. Not the most complex wine, but certainly shouts what it is and is enjoyable for it. 91-92

  • Bordeaux dinner and this bottle really shined, old bottle funk blew off quickly leaving a nose of red and black berries, color deep purple almost no bricking. Plums and red fruit hints of licorice and smoke leather and earthy minerality, hard to believe this bottle is 48 years old and was strong for 3 hours through dinner. Real old school Bordeaux that still has some legs for the future imho. Excellent!

Klassisk.

  • Past prime, but very drinkable. After blowing off the initial old bottle funk, the nose belied its 47 years with earthy mushroom and leather. The palate was much more youthful, still sweetly fruited, and a great smokey character. Light, elegant and lithe. I was very happy with this bottle, which improved in the glass over an hour, and lasted four without decline.

Flott vin.

  • Developed leather and earth on the nose. Light, delicate and feminine. Old style and classic. Took it for a Burgundy, which was way off, of course.

  • Fine Bordeaux, classic red fruits and a hint of cedar. In excellent shape and typical 1970 rounded character. My last bottle of 4 bought in 2009. Will keep another decade.

  • This was pretty delicious, seemed young? great color, had some depth cassis and graphite. Hard to believe it was 45 years young. Excellent

  • From Magnum. This took over an hour to fully come around but it was consumed prior to further air time. Not particularly complex. but very enjoyable for what it is. Red fruit dominated with sweet Oak and pencil shavings and some tobacco. Near silky smooth. An extra point for its still young demeanor at 45.

  • More vibrant than the last bottle. Substantial remaining fruit on the palate, firm white pepper notes, and a smooth leathery earthy finish. A nice balance of mature flavors and smooth palate, along with spice and fruit high notes.

  • This wine is fading but still offers up a nose with red cherry, decomposing leaves, light soil tones, and dry tobacco leaves. The sweet spice that was there in younger days is largely gone. Thinning on the palate, there is enough red fruit and soil to chew on. 89-

  • Past its prime. Still drinkable and enjoyable; leather, cedar and mushroomy nose sans fruit. The palate's quite a bit fresher than the nose. Not dead by any means, but I would have enjoyed this much more five or ten years earlier.

  • Good fill and cork remained in great condition. Deep ruby color and still very little bricking. Noting berries, cedar and silky smooth. This wine seems to have life and I am very glad to have a few more.

  • We had one good bottle of the two we opened. It was somewhat unidimensional. Usual aromas of lead pencil, earth and leather. Very meaty. Short finish. Not much left in it.

  • Quite dark in colour still with good evolution around the rim. Forest fruit, undergrowth, lead pencil, mushrooms on the nose. Good concentration on the palate, open with an attractive tartness. Slightly drying, very good length. Classic mature claret. 90-92(+)

  • As spectacular as always. Full of life, almost youthful. Nose of underwood, cedar. On the palate herbs, spices, round and soft tannins, silky texture. Great.

  • Relatively brown in the glass--definitely brick colored. Pale as well. Roasted meats, mushrooms, turkey, dark peppered cherries on the nose as well. White pepper, tons of roast beef, blood, leather, tobacco, hints of blackberry and dark black cherry, mint, and smoke. Tertiary notes of white pepper. Fruit is mostly gone, as are tannins. Replaced will well-balanced effort that is smooth, silky, fragrant, and with lots of character and life, and still a good acidic balance left. Drink now, or over the next 2-5 years. Probably sooner rather than later. But great effort from a 43 year old wine.

After its been open for 2 1/2 hours, lots of notes of mint, eucalyptus, cedar, white pepper, and tannic astringency.

    92-93

  • I have had this wine in my cellar since1978. After 43 years, it was still A DELIGHT. Wonderful nose, not so much tannin left, but showed a very nice balance, color was still good, I wish I had some more bottles, this was my last.

  • A great old bordeaux. Very soft and subdued at first opening but later emerging to reveal a more full bodiedl and complex wine after a hour or so of airing. Held up well against the other major wines at dinner...82 Ducriu, 82 Barolo and 41 Yquem.

  • A fine Bordeaux in great condition, soft red fruits perfect maturity but a little overwhelmed by christmas dinner, needed something more modest. Good wine all the same.

  • Impromptu tasting @ my place (Netherlands): Slow o-ed for 4 hours, then served. Opens a little wayward and mouldy, but this blows off after a few minutes in the glass. Deep crimson in colour, hardly any bricking. This over-40-year-old puppy has lots to offer and is very drinkable at the moment. Fine redberried fruits go hand in hand with some tar, cigarbox and a faint asphalt-note. Refreshing acidity and even some sweetness give this wines its structure, and it still doesn't turn bloody/steely at the end (which i often sense in older Bdx). Drink now!

  • Level into neck. A very tight but well preserved cork - no dampness at all - had preserved this wine in immaculate condition. A classic 1970 Bordeaux - a touch of iron on the nose but plenty of soft, red fruits. Flavour is more expressive than the nose, ripe, rounded red fruits - good finish. Drinking really well and while fully mature shows it still has life ahead of it.

  • Remarkable claret with a bouquet of cherry liquor and wild flowers, melted licorice, autumn leaves, and fresh cigar, becoming a sexy concoction of strawberries, ink, carrots, and campfire with time in the glass. The fuzzy and complex flavors tingled between blueberry, cedar, charred steak, and mushroom, shifting to biter carmel, chocolate-raspberry, and rocks on the finish. This wine filled the entire space so gently like a loosely packed felt insulation.

  • Saved this one for the big 4-0 birthday dinner and expected it to be 'suboptimal' so had a 1985 Cos at hand as well - just in case. What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! Bit of an issue getting the cork out as top part dried out but no real disaster fortunately. Decanted the wine for an hour before serving at 18-19 C. Impressive dark red colour all the way to the edge and impresive nose of prunes, leather and casis. Very soft tannins yet relatively full body. Perhaps this wine lost a bit of its potential but still good balance and medium long finish with red fruit (strawberry and raspberry). Exceeded expectations.

  • I first had this in 1995 and thought it had at least a decade left to go... Now fully mature but a lovely, soft claret with plenty of fruit and character still. The colour of blood, vibrant burgundian-style nose of red fruits with a hint of game. Soft, sweet, rounded gamey fruit, just going over the top and a little chocolatey on the finish but went beautifully with rump of lamb with roast garlic. Fruit holds up well after a two hour decant. Not a great deal of complexity, nor a particularly long finish but not drying out either. Lovely flavour. Won't get any better but what mature Bordeaux is all about.

  • Opened and decanted this bottle without letting it sit upright too long but was able to get most of the sediment to sit at the bottom. The cork was in fine condition, the color of the wine was still vibrant with a deep ruby color, not orange or browning. The nose was somewhat tight but did open up and it stayed alive during the entire time of consumption. We had it with duck, beef and lamb and was excellent. Upon first nose I got berries (strawberries) and some cedar. It opened up and became more complex and didn't die off like some older wines have a tendancy to do. I imagine this wine will be drinking quite well far beyond the range 07-10 which is marked here.

  • Tasting of four older Bordeaux, third place, lovely, rich fruit on the nose, cherry, smoke, cedar, more of the same on the palate, lovely rich taste, touch simple but almost elegant, medium body, nice medium/big finish.

  • With MPL and BLR at S&F survey of '70 Claret. Strong rich ruby color. Deep. In fine shape. Nose is soft, feminine. Elegant bouquet of fruit and chocolate. Complex and interesting. On the palate, it does not measure up to the nose. Fruit is fading a bit, and wood is too much in evidence. Rather hollow, especially after the promise of the nose. Drink up, tannins are gone and fruit is going. 5-12-9-5: 81/100.
