My 40th birthday at 67 Pall Mall (67 Pall Mall): A generous late addition from Ian. Someone described this like the long lost price coming to reclaim a throne - it might appear humble was impressive when revealed. Gorgeous nose of powdery florals, plum, oud, sapid red and blue plum. Wonderful palate - crisp and clean and good intensity. Good acidity and long finish. Really impressive wine in some punchy Margaux company!

Peter's 1983 extravaganza (67 Pall Mall): This was far from outshone in such exalted company! Sweet, lively nose that had all the classic aromas of mature left bank Bordeaux. So juicy and energetic on the palate, despite its savoury character, with a touch of greenness and a soft, elegant, spicy finish. A great bottle.

Peter's 40th (67 Pall Mall, London): Crimson and correct in colour for an 83. Books, leather and dried fruits on the nose. Medium bodied with fine tannins and feels nicely evolved with decaying red fruits, tobacco and more leather on the midpalate. Really well balanced. Drank alongside 83s from Palmer, Margaux and LLC and deserved its place, even if it had to blag its way in! From Zalto Bordeaux.

Solid cork- decanted. Dark garnet with a touch of orange abutting the clear rim. Nose subtle and evolving, sometimes absent, notes of loam, mushroom, cigar box. Beautiful palate took on some welcome weight after an hour- stewed black raspberry, cassis and lingering creme de menthe. Powdery tannin coats the tongue with plenty of acidity to drive interest. Really nice bottle with gorgeous fruit and savory notes…paired exceptionally well with pan roasted chicken and mushroom risotto.

Wonderful that this is still so good. Totally old (pre Parker) medoc style with slightly vegetal cedar notes. No loss of power. A lovely nostalgic experience. Buy it if you can (faint hope...)

Had tried it previously with better nose and palate. This bottle seem to have bottle variation and lacks the fruits nose and palate. The cork was dry and broke half way despite having good ullage level; high shoulder. Full of cedar, charr wood, toast. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Did not decant.

Pristine bottle although cork split in half. Ruby red with bricking throughout the wine. Nose of earth, dust, baked red fruits, leather, some cassis. With air, the wine aromas open up to sweet tobacco, cassis, old leather and that je je sais quoi nose typical of the 82s and 83s left bank. On the palate starts tight but opens up with time in the decanter, good acidity mid palate and lots of dark red fruits, finishes with decent length and sweet spicy tannins. Quite a nice wine and still has mileage provided one lands on a good bottle. Extremely pleasurable.

Sourdough, cooked red fruits, cherry, toast, cedar, spices. Medium+ acidity, medium tannin. Initially, there was a wet smell, after decanting 2 hours it is gone. The taste is not as pronounced and taste diluted at the finish. Previously had a better bottle, guess it's bottle variation.

Perfumed and elegant on the nose. Dried red fruits, cedar, mushroom. It gets better as it breathes in the glass. Pristine bottle condition with very good fill. Totally unexpected from 1983 vintage. Thought that 1983 vintage was great in Margaux only.

From magnum this was drinking very nicely. It had plenty of freshly polished boot leather to the aroma and a touch of cedar, graphite and tobacco. There's still a core of briary fruit and whilst structural elements are all but neatly tucked into the wine its still has a little bit of chew and is very fresh. Not particularly deep or long, but nicely balanced luncheon Claret that we enjoyed immensely for dinner.

Another beautiful, mature bottle. Cork was soaked through and slightly protruding- came out intact. Decanted; came together after an hour or so. Some browning on the edges, light garnet to the core. Evolving nose of cigar box, leather, cherry, and black raspberry. Palate similar, with some floral notes and creamy cassis. Fabulous structure, nice acidity, excellent fruit quality and still some fine, ripe tannin. Lingering bright cherry finish. Gorgeous with herb pesto coated roast chicken and roast potatoes.

Top shoulder fill, cork soaked 3/4 through, broke in half with an ah-so - decanted. Color gorgeous garnet with browning to a clear rim. Nose of black raspberry, kirsch, mushroom, sous bois, some funk. Palate gorgeous black raspberry, perfect acidity and completely integrated tannins. Just smooth, classy, and light bodied. Compared to an '06 with dinner of stuffed pork loin roast, tomatoes stuffed with saffron risotto and sauteed kale. I've enjoyed the '06 Lagune on several occasions, but the '83 made the '06 seem infantile in comparison.

Found this forgotten in the cellar. Didn't expect much but it was exquisite, despite the low neck and broken cork. Had to microfilter it while decanting. Deep garnet with orange-brownish outer rim. Nose of tobacco, wet earth, leather. Medium-bodied. Kirsch-infused plum on the palate. I'm surprised at the other recent tasting notes, as this bottle at least was still quite enjoyable. I wish I had another one forgotten in the cellar! UPDATE: I kept a glass to taste it later in the day, and it had become undrinkable.

Blind with Geoff Labitzke: Garnet w/ orange-bricking rim and slight brown notes; prune, plum, sour asian plum, sweet-sour w/leather, brett, slight oxidation, dates, "tootsie roll"!pot pouri, vanilla, dill, cumin, smoke, gravel, tobacco, baked earth. Mod.+ everything. Guessed '94 rioja, but sort of knew it was too dark, earthy, not enough red fruit notes, and French , not American oak, little more tannic too. Decent, not bad La Lagune, showing it's age but not completely over.

Decided to pop this one Friday night to pair with some Chinese food at Tonny Restaurant with my wife. Wine of my birth year. Very savoury, notes of sea salt caramel, and melting tannins on the palate. Hints of cocoa on the nose, and lots of ripe, succulent grapes and a hint of raisins. Medium bodied. Drinking perfect now. Thoroughly enjoyed it. This is how a good, well aged Bordeaux should taste!

Medium ruby, some browning throughout. Broad pale rim, quite some legs. Rich, slightly farmyardy, blackcurrant nose. Light/medium bodied with firm acidity but nice spicy black fruit beneath. Good length with ripe fruit and a slightly dry, spicy, edge. 16.5/20

La Lagune Vertical (Brussels, Belgium): Evolved color with discoloration on the rim. Unpleasant nose. Short in mouth - little complexity. This wine has been on a downward slope for a while.
Robe évoluée, bord décoloré. Nez peu plaisant. Court en bouche - peu de complexité. Ce vin me paraît être sur la pente descendante depuis quelques années.
