Tasted 40 minutes after opening the bottle, no decant Palate showing brick red color The nose shows fully developed character, ripe to overripe cherry, berry, sweet spice, thin oak frame Palate shows riper red fruit compared to nose, medium acidity showing some tannins still, mediujm finish Feels like that it could open more

Christmas lunch with the wine ark boys (Porcine, Oxford Street): Apricot, orange marmalade made with brown sugar, a little vanilla, toffee, honey. In the mouth it's juicy, a little simpler than the nose implies with a touch more toffee tending to caramel…perfectly pleasant though.

Riojan investigation (Frank's place in Matraville): From Coravin. Vanilla, dusty leather, ripe strawberry and blackcurrant, a little orange peel with time and a slightly meaty note. It's wetly juicy on the palate with strawberry and blackcurrant fruit, slight alcohol warmth, drying talc textured tannins, vanilla and that orange peel note. There is a sense of richness on the finish. Yum.

Decanted. On the nose - black cherries, leather, spice and earthiness. Full bodied, pleasant enough but a little bit unbalanced IMO. Probably a couple of years past it but a very good wine.

Phil's Birthday tasting (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): from Coravin. Leather, earth, sweet spice, red berry, slight tobacco leaf, slight baked fruit. More of the same palate, a touch of raisins on the finish. Very nice.

From Coravin. Aromas of strawberry, slight white pepper, vanilla, a little leather, mineral and very slight oxidative notes. Gets richer and creamier with time. And more of the same on the palate, the fruit is confected almost, plenty of tannins as well but balanced and juicy acidity. Wow. Really good and a lovely surprise.

'Size Matters': Berry Bros. Magnum Tasting (Berry Bros., Central, Hong Kong): Small glass from an undecanted mangnum opened 2 hours prior. Totally translucent autumnal red plum colour. Nose is similar fresh but autumnal red plums, hints of woodsmoke and gunflint, the fruit gets fresher with time in the glass and it all gets more perfumed. Palate is richly medium bodied, ripe and very harmonious but with fresh acidity balancing the very velvety tannins. Very reverberant inside the head on the finish. My clear WOTN even though it was one-third the price of the next cheapest wine and one-eigth of the most expensive. Delightful. I would love to drink this with simple white truffle pasta.
