The nose is fantastic and, for me, an absolute bench-mark in how aged Rioja should smell. A gentle hint of some red fruits, with plenty of stewed, over-ripe and dried fruits and a hint of blackcurrant fruit-gums. It also has a certain savouriness with old wood, leather and a bit of sweetness from the oak regime.
On the palate, the fruit is slightly more dominant, perhaps surprisingly, pairing excellently with a Cote de Boeuf and Roquefort salad.
This is clearly an old wine, but given decent storage I don't see it completely falling apart any time soon, as the acid core of the '95 vintage (like '05) is keeping it wonderfully refreshing and focused (albeit for a 23 year old wine). Echoing the thread that took place on the discussion board recently, I can only point out that the score reflects my enjoyment of this particular wine at this particular moment. The CVNE GR'98 that we had the previous evening was also stunning (and ever so slightly preferred by my drinking companion), and a wine clearly built for ageing, but somehow the Ardanza just had a little more 'pizzazz' for me, if you will.

Fully mature and should probably have been opened before now. Still enjoyable with good depth of flavours, but past its plateau. Still some fruits, but dried and raisin in character, also some plums on the palate and some black treacle. Still some tannins and acidity.

Fairly maderised but no surprise as know to have been a victim of poor previous storage. Very advanced — more like something from the 50s. Worse on on nose, palate just about OK for a glass but no more.

Cata Histórica de Viña Ardanza (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid): Temptanillo 80% Grenache 20% Spicy and with a push. Aromas of cinnamon and the wood of table of a pastry-shop. Not a multifaceted Ardanza but an excellent one. In the mouth it is very muted, without grip, with a watery texture and an almost disappeared acidity. On the palate is not that fragile, it is that almost broken. Everything is in the nose IMHO.

Classic. Very youthful, complex and involving. Still fruit led but really supported with a shifting savoury profile involving coffee, earth, and woody tail. The last thing is the lick of cherry sour. Absolutely sang with roast lamb and good company.

A little like playing a game of who do you think you are (or even popping in the DeLorean with Marty Mcfly!) this was like an echo from the futre past of Ardanza.
As a tasting note, without wishing to be too whimsical, it was like listening to background music of a classic Ardanza in a library full of old and well thumbed leather bound books with a small log fire going on in the background, whilst we sip vintage port. Undoubtedly, the '05 was a punchier beast, but it's young, and to score this wine less would have been to miss the essential enjoyment that it gave. And they clearly have much more in common than other Ardanza vintages.
The bottle I have left will probably be consumed in the next three or four years, before it slides into oblivion. I shall miss it when it's gone.

Cork partially dropped in to bottle. A little wine above the cork. Cork slipped in to bottle at first sight of corkscrew. First impression is that this is in surprisingly good nick; maybe feels a little older than 95, but no worse than early eighties. A slight cloudiness/fine haze, mid garnet with plenty of depth. Classic Rioja nose. creamy, spicy vanilla nose with soft red fruit and a touch of fireside. Fresh with decent acidity on the attack, reasonably bright fruit through the mid palate. Finishes well. Lots of interest here and showing well, all the more so as the cork had failed. Bare **** The remaining 1/3 bottle gassed and out in fridge overnight. Very flat cf yesterday - not much more than **1/2. Suspect a pristine bottle would have held well.

Its appearance (consistent with other times) is very Pinot-like. Very light, slight bricking at the rim. (a couple of tatsers guessed it at Pinot on sight).
Plenty of floral notes, violets, plenty of age-related smells, reminds one of chutney (!?), obviously a touch of vanilla and cherry on the nose.
The palate for everyone (apart from my goodself, who would score this a 93 if he could) was that the taste didn't live up to the nose, that it was "a bit flat", "past it" and "not a particularly strong flavour", and yet it has " a long finish".

Cork wet to half way. Touch of bricking but still youthful. Nose a bit muted on p&p but signs of cherry and wood. In the mouth this really sings. Plenty of oak still, tannins well integrated. Rounded, mouthfilling, classic rioja and plenty of length. Nothing to suggest this isn't going on for a good while yet.

I searched for the proper description of what I was getting in the nose and never did come up with it other than to say it was different and not necessarily in a bad way; the wine had some peppered cherry/ berry notes along with leather and tar, was soft and easy on the palate; overall decent.

At its peak. Double decanted. Garnet in appearance with an enticing nose of vanilla, morello cherry, clove and wild herb. Open and generous fom the decanter straight away. On the palate ultra fine grained tannin and decent acidity lend some excellent structure to the ripe, rounded fruit and sweet spice character. Overall a very solid wine, if not exactly breaking new ground, drinking beautifully now and over the next 10 years.

Ruby red with watery edges and dark core. In the nose very reductive and lightly sulphuric with strong notes of blown out candle and burnt match, in addition some animalic notes (fur) and not much fruit (a hint of cherry, maybe). The reductive notes don't go away with air. On the palate, this is stunning, very finely woven with soft, but noticeable acidity, lots of red currant. If only the nose was more likable, this would be fantastic.
