Heady aromas of black fruit, soil, pine/menthol and incense. Great mouthfeel with rich, concentrated fruit, yet firm and structured with very dry tannins on the finish. With the black fruit and tannins, it reminded me of a Left Bank Bordeaux, albeit a bit amped up in power and more glycerol.

Consistent with my last note, although this time the bottle was a bit tannic initially (after 1 hour decant). Started to soften in hour 2. Paired well enough with rosemary, thyme & garlic-rubbed leg of lamb. Nice wine but once again under-performed relative to the 94+ ratings it is garnering here. Just not my style, I guess (or that of my wife).

Licorice, smoky wood, black fruit, pepper and some earth. Very smooth. Clearly in its drinking window but also seems like it’s got many good years ahead of it. The only knock, which other posters flagged as well, is that it isn’t as complex as one might hope for at this price point. But is an excellent wine nonetheless. Paired well with a very rich rotisseried prime rib roast.

Double decanted around 4 hours before dinner. Lovely colour, dark and glossy. A little closed on the nose at first but gradually opening up in the glass showing complex notes of dark fruit, woodsmoke, vanilla, rose petals, spices. Very impressive. On the palate powerful and concentrated but also very elegant and polished with great texture and wonderful balance. Slightly spicy with fine fruit, firm tannins, intense and persistent. Amazing finish with great minerality. A beautiful wine. Approachable especially with food but great future. 95-96+

NFA Dinner 2014 (Gattopardo Restaurant, Tras Street, Singapore): Neither of the pair of the Riojas on this flight were to my taste (I prefer more traditional styles), this even less so than the 1999 Benjamin Romeo Contador that followed. But I must admit that they were both quite impressive. I would wait 20 years on this wine though. It was huge. It started out with a massive nose, with tons of ripe black fruit and sweet, vanilla oak and balsam wood aromas at first. I thought it was a young Priorat with a nose like that. Some meaty, umami, earthy notes started coming up with time, and it was only a little menthol hint that crept out at the edges of the bouquet that then nodded towards Tempranillo. The palate was just as huge. Again, there was a reservoir of rich, ripe, black fruit - black cherries and berries - hardly Rioja in size and in its thick, creamy texture and extracted nature, but somehow there was a lovely purity and clarity to it all and a nice grippiness of structure, with well-integrated acidity and fine, powdery tannins woven deep into the texture of the wine. Thankfully, the palate was less one-note than the nose, with a light kiss of fresh mint and dill and a little drift of menthol cigarettes at the long, richly fruited finish showing a bit more Rioja character. There is honestly quite outstanding quality to the fruit here, and the winemaking, if you like style, is very polished. However, the wine needs much, much more time to shed the tons of baby fat and to allow nuance and character to come out. At the moment, it seemed to me like an exercise in showing-off how much can be eked out of a modern Rioja more than anything else. High on points, but not really that high on enjoyment. 93+

Beautiful bouquet, a bit rustic, ripe dark fruits, beautiful oak, smoke, some eucalyptus etc. On the palate concentrated yet elegant. Beautiful dark as well as red berry fruits, sweet spices and soft and round tannin with a pleasant bite. A complex, elegant and very harmonious wine. Great! Mature now and this will be a feast over the next 5+ years. 96

Perhaps a little corked..... not much nose. Very dark, light rim. Dark plums, blackberrry, oak spice palate. Dry, rich. Tannin is firm and a little dry. Long finish. From Jerobaum.
I really did not like this when it was opened. It was not until I opened the half empty bottle a day later this revealed what it had. Very thick and extracted. The dark cherry midpalate was incredible. Would recommend waiting at least 5 more years on this or decanting 4 hours in advance.

Artadi tasting. The son of the producer came over to join us. (@ WB): Beautiful bouquet with black fruits, smoke, toasted oak, black fruits and some spiciness and menthol. Although beautiful the bouquet is still holding back. Same elements on the palate. The tannin is still firm and needs more time to evolve. Try again around 2015, but I am sure this wine will still be great in 2020. 94++ for now.

Quite much barnyard in the bouquet, but it is lovely. Some menthol as well. On the palate very ripe fruits, sweetness and wonderfully integrated oak. Full bodied. Complex, creamy. After decanting well before this is already a great wine and it will probably improve over the next 5+ years. 94+

Almost looks like grenache. This wine really does not resemble any other version on Tempranillo. Very broad and wide on the palate. Coats the mouth with velvety tannins. Long and lush with an inner core of sweet kirsch. Very persistant finish.
