From magnum tonight with grilled, butterflied leg of lamb a la SFJoe. Pop 'n' pour produced a wine that was still recognizably Zin yet rounded and fully mature. It still had plenty of Zinberry fruit not yet verging into plummy territory and enough acidity on the back end to make it a good food wine. It went down way too easily.

Zins do age in an interesting way, depending on how they are made. Ridge made this to age, for sure. 375ml bottle, well cellared, cork just staring to weep through the foil. Brown edge in the glass, nose of an old OTH wine. 20 seconds o the palate and the Zin fruit came through. 20 minutes in the glass and some Zin nose arrived. Sure, it would have been more enjoyable 10-15 years ago, but a fun experience nonetheless.

I don't really consider myself a Zin person but these old Ridges always make me reconsider. It is a bit more fruit forward than a lot of the wines on the table and easy to tell it is the 'new world' one, but I like some fruit in my wine. More of a darker almost raspberry meets boysenberry character. On the riper side and yet somehow the wine seems to capture the seeds that you get in those fruits that keeps them from being overly sweet. Very fun.

Bought at auction. Sadly not in great shape (despite a perfect looking bottle and cork). Volitle nose and baked fruit on the palate. No Improvement on day 2. Nowhere close to the awesomeness of the 91 Lytton I had a couple years ago.
Oh well. No great wines....

Fill was top shoulder. Showed quite advanced but big fruit at the same time. Still some tannin. The most surprising thing was how sweet it seemed. Dunno if that was a fruit character or some under the radar rs. Didn't change much with air. Was a gamble that didn't pay off.

Blind Tasting 1978 - 1990 Ridge Zinfandels (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Light bricking. Pretty nose of bright red cherries. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Really youthful palate, fruit-forward with ripe raspberries and strawberries. Enjoyable but one-dimensional in my opinion and not showing any tertiary characteristics. Hold. (my 3rd, group's 1st - 13 1st place votes!)

Tasted blind. Nose - green cocktail olive, cherry, sweetish/oxidative. Sweet pickle, nice mature cherry, smooth, odd, but not unpleasant. With time, some smoked meat and cabbage, dark berry.

Some bricking around the edges. Tons of fruit, mostly prune but some boysenberry and cherry as well. Very sweet, bordering portlike on the finish. My wife said "It's like being kicked in the butt by caramel."

Showing a bit of age, still plenty of fruit and good acidity. Maybe paled in comparison with some slighly younger Cabs opened. On the downslope. From 375 ml.

Small amount of leakage under the capsule due to a failing cork; bottom 2/3 of the cork was soft and spongy. But the wine was sound - rich and full-bodied, with plenty of spicy red fruit, raisin, and cedary wood flavors. The color was garnet, turning tawny at the rim. Overall this had plenty to offer, but clearly had begun the downhill slope.

Some bricking, but not much for a 16 year old zin blend. Still some fruit on the nose, classic LS, with some earth, saddle leather, and a hint of pepper. Really supple, exciting mouthfeel, the best part of this wine. A long solid finish. This actually got better and better in the glass over a few hours. What a great wine. Better than the last bottle I had, which I thought may be on the downslope, I think this still has some legs to it.

Nice cassis, spice, nice acidity. Dark fruit. Lingering finish. Really
enjoyable but seems like it's on downward swing. Slight off note

Blind Ridge Lytton Springs and Lytton Estate 1990 - 1997 (Berkeley): Group's #1; my #6; 8 first; 3 second; 2 third; 0 last. Aromas and flavors of plums, jammy dark fruits, meat, leather, alcohol, and spice. Complex, but the alcohol was a touch overpowering.
