2008 L'Ermite 100% Syrah Tobacco, Anise, dusty, plum Strong dark fruits, still tannic with some time to go. Opening up nicely in glass but with a little heat coming through as the wine warmed. Finish is incredible.

Medium garnet. Pronounced nose of rhubarb and leather. On the palate earth, plums, white pepper. Long finish. Clearly a well made wine, maybe a little too primary right now. Should continue to improve.

Sampled from Coravin + an hour to air in the glass. Clearly has a ton of character but just way too young - sharp acidity and very very tight. Maybe try again in 5 years.

Initial aromas of red fruits, plums, iron and developed into a flower, cake bouquet. Tasted plum skin, raspberries. Medium bodied. This is austere and edgy with tannins and spikes of sourness; felt that its acidity was rough. The bottle just didn’t do it for me tonight. Don’t open now - keep for at least 5 years.

I do not feel capable of assesing this wine. Of course Chapoutier's single vineyard wines are highly regarded yet from tasting this wine I could only sense its quality from its structural elements: from the silky texture on the palate, the elegance and clarity, the quality of tannins. But aromatically I could not sense much, it seemed to me tight, focused and unyielding. On the other hand it's no secret that great Rhone wines need time...

The Syrah Giants (Paradiso Restaurant, Athens, Greece): I loved this wine from the first whif, although some found it extremely primary and focused. Fabulous nose of black pepper, violet, raspberries, smoke and meaty scents. Medium+ bodied, elegant but still youthful with firm tannins of excellent quality, high acidity and a long and beautiful spicy aftertaste.

A dense ruby colour. Lovely open nose, ever changing with notes of smoky blackberry and graphite. Stylish and elegant with fine tannins, a floral lift to the plump black fruits and a lingering smoky roasted coffee note on the long finish.

Red and black fruits. Notes of leather, spices and hint of beautiful salinity. Well balanced, excellent grip and lovely finish.

Really good back bone of tannins and fruit. Very elegant yet powerful wine. Nose of pepper, violets.
Paired beautifully with a rare steak.
