Solid depth and finish; solid QPR. Well balanced acid and fruit. Elegant and not over the hill. Peppery notes on the finish. Perfect pairing for an outdoor barbecue.

We were having dinner with friends so I opened another bottle to test it out. Also presented the bottle from Friday as a comparison. The second bottle was fresh and enjoyable right from the start. The Friday bottle was still good after being opened for two days, but not as good as the second bottle.

An interesting wine. Popped and poured on Friday. My wife and I both spit it out. Horrid, vinegar, vulgar. But, I am hard headed and wanted to see if it would improve. Saturday it has transformed into what it should be. A deep and earthy Syrah. Deep. I doubt it will age much longer. I have two more bottles I bought for our niece’s birth year wine, but she may loose out. We need to drink it all now.

Nice wine and great QPR at $19 US dollars. The nose is filled with crushed raspberry fruit, forest, hints of charcoal, leather and pine needle. The pallette offers bright cherry and raspberry fruit and hints of pomegranate and blueberry backed by nice acidity, the frame is silky and elegant, tannins faintly noticeable on the red fruit and earthy finish where the terroir of the vineyards leaves a nice impression. Good stuff. Drink now or over the next few years. Wine stores in temp controlled cellar since purchase.

Another excellent bottle. Some of these have been quite bretty (cleared off with some airing) but this one wasn't. It was quite floral and perfumy on both the nose and palate....a charming, feminine expression of Crozes-Hermitage. Tannins and acidity were at a perfect level....prime spot in the drinking window right now. This is one of those wines that is so easily drinkable, it disappears as if a magician were waving his magic wand over it. Great bargain at $19.75 (per bottle by the case) from Corner Wine in Lexington. I bought a case and it was a smart investment.

This is one of those wines you find on sale and later realize after it's too late that you should have purchased a whole case. This had such a wonderful old-world nose, and a deep ruby color. There was plenty of spicy Sirah flavors, and a smooth and mouth coating body. My only regret is that I opened it a year or so too early. Those who drink these types of wines shortly after release just don't know what they're missing.

I tried this wine together with Alain Graillot wine from the same vintage.
During the hole bottle it had good fruit with distinct characters of the syrah grape from the north of rhone. Blackberry, violets and white pepper. A good wine, maybe it is the good vintage that gives the rich fruit which can be nice. Comparison with Graillot, this wine is a little bit safe, a nice wine from the northern Rhone. But I miss the minerality that I find in the better wines from this appellation.

When I first opened this bottle, it had a profoundly Bretty nose....like fresh cat excrement...and I thought I had finally found a bottle that was too Bretty even for me. However, I just swirled the glass for about 10 minutes, and the odor blew off....to reveal a spectacular wine!
The nose is fairly subdued....restrained black fruits and a bit of oak....but the palate is intensely...and I mean I-N-T-E-N-S-E-L-Y...perfumy and floral. Oh My God. People pay $$$ for Bordeaux and Burgundies with such a floral character. Drinking this wine is like drinking fresh peony and iris flowers, and the other facets aren't shabby either....black fruits, tannins, and acidity are in absolutely perfect balance, and the oak is not overdone, which isn't always the case with Guigal. The finish is delicate, but also floral and citrusy. It's a bit short, and that shortness was the only thing preventing this from being a 95-pointer.
Now, I suspect some of you are reading this and disbelieving my review. I have a case of this stuff; this is the third bottle, and the first two, while decent wines, were not nearly at this level....88-89 point wines. But this bottle had purple magic in it. So I don't expect other bottles in the case to be this good, but this one bottle was worth the $237 I paid for the whole case.
Dust of majestic structures wracked by power of time, bitterness of past glory, tiredness of eternal grandeur, flavor of the past... And dust again... I think it past the peak. There is no residual sweetness, acidity is prominent, but it does not spark the wine. There is no much flavor left, but finish is long and giving you all that memories of past glory...

I found this pretty tight. Not showing much at all aromatically, and while it seems balanced in the mouth doesn't really have anything to take note of. It certainly has nice weight and a linear sense of direction. I think I'll sit on what I've got for another 2 years and check again. Seems like there's potential.

Robust, lively, and shifting aromas of dusty dark berries, cracked black pepper, game, and dried florals. Very promising initially, with a savory intensity on the palate mirroring the nose as mixed dark fruit, chalk, and sanguine minerals emerge. The finish, though a bit tight and tannic, carries promising tart red berry acidity and violets. Young now, but with significant upside in the cellar. Hold.

i've never had a northern rhone wine, and i chose this one specifically to see the style. it was part of a syrah tasting, so i don't have detailed notes, but i did enjoy it. on the nose there was a musty, barnyard-y, salty quality, someone also smelled rubber or plastic, like a band-aid. on the palate it was much less funky, mainly a salty quality, a bit of leather, maybe a subdued cherry flavor. the thing i enjoyed was an amalgam of intriguing earthy flavors with a juice acidity that warranted continued drinking. while i'm sure it could have been better, it was very delicious and i don't regret my choice.

Grenat assez sombre.

When I first tasted this beside a few top-notch American syrahs, I wasn't overly impressed. However, in hindsight, it was a bit unfair to compare this $20 bottle of CdR to a $35 bottle of a single-vineyard Martinelli. After drinking it later, on it's on, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fruit forward, smokey, bacon fat and rubber hose. It doesn't have that earthy Old-World taste, as best I can tell. I'd certainly buy this again.

If this is an entry level northern Côtes du Rhône from a reasonable year by a top-producer, ages for over 4 years, then I don't know what the fuss is all about. This should be the representative of a very good CdR. There should be no fallback on "Ah, but 2007 was not one of the best years" or on "Yes, but the vineyard-specific wines (at 4 times the price) are better example". No they are not!! - they are way out on the right side of the bell-curve. It is a pleasant wine, sure enough, but it certainly has no "Wow" factor. To be blunt it is what I feared - interesting complex nuances set in a framework that seemed "lean" and a bit "nervous". I think you have to be born drinking this wine to rank it above the better Australian and South African examples.

Cork was wet to the top. Inoffensive, fruit forward wine with a very nice twist of iron, olive, spice and orange peel. Judging by this bottle, it won't get any better, so suggest drinking sooner rather than later.

Bright fruit with balanced ground pepper spicyness, medium body and nice acidity to carry the flavours. Definitely a well made wine - good QPR. I did not find this wine to be quite as complex as some other tasting notes seem to suggest. The oak is definitely not a problem.

Clear, medium ruby color with a medium intensity nose. The wine shows brambly blackberries sprinkled with black pepper, cedar, nutmeg, and some game on the nose. It has a clean, dry palate with medium plus acidity and medium tannins. The black pepper is joined by white pepper, rose water, mushroom and forest floor, and juicy dark fruit flavors. This has a medium body and finish and is a good northern Rhone.

Aerated and decanted. Really closed for the first thirty minutes and then opened and showed some interesting elements with notes of spice and pepper, but there was also something green and slightly unpleasant lurking here. The finish became green and sour as the wine opened up.
Drank the best between hour one and two and then the unpleasant notes seemed to multiply. I thought the 2006 version of this wine was surprisingly good, so this was a real disappointment.

Moderate nose of blackberry, spicy oak and pepper. Medium body, slightly hollow mid palate with black berry, blueberry pie and black pepper. Medium finish.

Shiraz and Syrah from all over the world (Wine Route Savion): Tasted blind. Opaque purple color. Nice nose - ripe fruits, smoke and spices. Harmonic and well balanced. Light to medium bodied, fruity in the palate. Nice, simple wine (36$)

Funky bleach nose straight on the pour. Swirl and let it breath and that blows off quickly, revealing a very nice northern Rhone!

Noe lukket. Middels fyldig, saftig frukt med markant, men balansert, fin syre. Kirsebær. Milde tanniner. 86-87

Dark garnet wine. Dark berries with earth and spice. Not nearly as much garrigue as the regular Guigal cote du rhone, which I prefer over this wine because of this. Still a very drinkable and enjoyable wine.

I agree with the former note that this wine is rather anemic, but not without some charm. Medium body, juicy, savory, refreshing and with a bit of tannins. don't know if it is worth the price i paid, but it is satisfying and a good everyday wine.

Not very powerful, with aromas of berries, bacon, and a hint of leather. Smooth palate and a sort finish. Serviceable and decent enough to pair with a barbecue. Drink now.
