Big and full bodied, this 11 yr old RRV Syrah shows off black fruit like black cherry and plum, with burnt embers, and black pepper. Bold and tannic on the palate, with ripened plum, black cherry, wet leather, smoke, and wet gravel. The finish is quite long, but comes across a bit manipulated, showing off gritty and chewy tannins, alongside slightly lacking acidity, and some baby fat on the ripe and expansive finish. Drink now through 2021+. Tasty but too brawny for my liking.

Opened yesterday, TN from today. The wine is deep, dark purple at the core, barely fading at the rim. The nose shows ripe black cherry fruit, kirsch liqueur, and smoke. The palate is a bit hot, with flavors of cherry liqueur, licorice, and over-ripened black cherries. Tannins have softened with age and are well-integrated. Not alot of complexity here, other than ripe and over-ripe fruit flavors. This wine is well-made but not in my wheelhouse. Will not likely further improve with bottle age, so drink now through 2017.

This must've been a fruity beast a few years ago and perhaps a bit clunky, but it's all coming together nicely. Still plenty of ripe forward fruit (mostly dark cherry), but other elements are emerging to add complexity to a very expressive nose. Green pepper, sweet tobacco, mocha, and a smoldering smoky leather note. It all transitions to a rich round palate with a satisfying, albeit short finish. Clearly and unapologetically Californian, but slight hints of old world funk pop up every once in awhile. More hedonistic than intellectual, I'd say this is at the beginning of a 2-3 year prime.

Pop and pour into a decanter, a substantial amount of fine sediment clinging to the bottle. In the glass, dark purplish-red. On the nose, a mix of plums and blackberries with hints of fresh ground pepper. On the palate, a smooth texture coupled with more pure fruit, followed by a long albeit slightly rough tannic finish. 2-3 more years in the cellar should be beneficial.

Purple. Mineral spice and grilled meat with dark fruit, on the nose and palate. Very solid , good with food and no flaws. After 3hours it developed more ripe cherry and black raspberry notes

Very Californian. Rich, ripe and voluptuous. This wasn't what I expected when I was told that it was "cool weather Syrah." It bordered on hot with every sip. It really isn't my style; I like leaner more acid driven Syrah with more earthy notes.

Very dark purple, with extremely ripe black fruits with some underlying pepper and smoke notes. The fruit is so ripe on the palate that it overwhelms everything and makes this taste like a flabby, high alcohol, fruit syrup. I could barely drink it.

Tough to drink on opening but opened up after 3 hours. Really interesting nose of ripe blackberry, raspberry, dried spices, and a little floral. Really nice balance on the palate - black fruit with oregano.

Decanted for 30 mins, then enjoyed over the next 2 hours or so. The last glass was the best, showing definite benefit from oxygen, speaking to the ageability of this fine wine. This line shows off a clear, deep ruby color, fading just slightly to a medium ruby rim. Very deep and alluring in color. The nose is in a developing stage showing off medium plus intensity aromas of black cherry, leather, anise, minerality, and mint. On the palate, this is a dry wine showing full bodied mouthfeel and medium plus alcohol (14.8%), with medium intensity flavors of black cherry, anise, menthol, sweet tobacco, and leather. The medium acidity shows wonderful balance without being overdone, leading into a medium plus length finish that shows dark fruit and licorice, and lasts for over 40 seconds. The tannins are a bit course and heavy at first opening, but over a few hours, they really do integrate nicely into the wine and present a much more structured final piece. This is a beautiful RRV Syrah that is drinking quite well now, and will continue to improve over the next 8 years or so.

A strong aromatic wine with good depth of flavor. Well integrated meaty wine with slight red fruits and blackberry, with black pepper. Easy to drink, lots of complexity; a good effort here.

Decanted for three hours before service, very fine sediment on the decant. In the glass, deep saturated reddish-purple. On the nose, currants and crushed blackberries. On the palate, still somewhat tannic, but with a relatively silky mid-palate, dark fruit, a bit of coffee and a bit of damp earth, subtle peppery notes, and a moderately long finish. I suspect 2-3 years in the cellar will take the edges off.

Showing well. Popped and poured. Big meaty nose with spice and black currants. Quite tannic, but ripe with and a nice sweetness, dark fruit. Finishes with a strong mocha note mixed with meat and spice. Delivous syrah that could use a few years. Nice structure. Showing better than the last bottle.

Smoke flavor, berries, tar and earth. Drank with earth wise ny strips, starch and veggies. Dark in color, long after the drink the taste is mellow and smooth begging for another sip. I plan on laying these down for a few years and seeing how they mature. Hopefully the smokey flavor stays as it defines this wine

Dark in color with notes of game, meat, olives and dark fruit. Pretty intriguing nose. Palate was soft, full, and nice layering of complexity balanced with acidity. Soft, moderate finish. Much better than previous bottle. Based on other's notes, there may be some significant bottle variation or perhaps it just is rapidly changing with age.

decanted three hours. nose showed blackberry, plum, with a bit of anise, then meat. very vibrant. the palate has tangy plum, with other dark fruit finishing with smoke and meat notes. very good acidity, medium length finish. feels like the oak is near completely integrated, a surprise after the previous bottles i've had. loved this bottle!

Nose of earth and dried berries, good blackberry flavors, but the dried herbs and slightly vegetal finish keeps this from climbing the heights. At $50+ the QPR here is weak. Tensley, Gramercy, Two Hands, Kilikanoon, and Herman Story all make better Syrah at this price point or lower. DuMol sets very high standards in Pinot and Chardonnay, this is a little disapointing.

Ran through a vinturi then decanted for an hour. Very opaque with a violet hue. Some blueberry notes with an undertone of dark chocolate. Still a bit tannic 2 hours after opening, and doesn't have the complexity of the eddie'e patch, but still on par with a typical DuMol.

A bit of a disconnect between flavor and smell on this one as the flavor is composed of peppery spices while the nose is beautifully bright and fruity. The earthy, or pencil lead, aromas that you'd expect from the flavor profile do exist, but they are very subtle and took some time for me to detect. I liked this flavor/aroma complexity, but I think the finish suffers - it's short, vegetal and bitter.
update - I'm finishing off the bottle two days after opening and the wine is really fantastic now. A hint of heat, but the flavor is smooth and well integrated. More red fruits today as well. Probably a 92 at this point.

Decanted for 2 hours. Way different experience for me on this one. Over thr top Banana cream pie on the nose....very odd bouquet. On the palatte absolutely no transition from dark berry fruit to green bell pepper/bitter veggie. This wine had absolutely zero finish and was beyond disjointed. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. It almost tasted like a wine that was manipulated to try and mask the vintage struggles....only they could not do enough to coerce it into a Cali Fruit bomb. Awful.

Not sure about this one. Seemed to have aromas of some sweet fruit but also some olives and greenness like after cutting weeds in the yard. Actually found the nose very complex and interesting but the palate was a bit disappointing. I found it soft and round but ending was short and somewhat angular. I noticed previous reviews are more encouraging. No obvious cork taint but I suppose there may have been something less perceivable. Or perhaps it was just a reflection of a tough vintage. Next bottle will help me figure this out.

Decanted for 1 hour. No formal detailed notes as this was drunk about a week ago, but I took 2 things away from this.
1. It has wonderful balance in the mouthfeel...creamy and polished and at the same time it has terrific acidity which shows in the midpalatte in a really seamless transition from the attack.
2. It needs a few years and/or a longer decant next time so it can hit it's stride.
Good stuff and I will hold the other ones for a few years (3-5)

decanted for 2 hours. still started out as an oak bomb, but after 20-30 minutes in the glass it starts to show plenty of fruit character. blueberry with spice and some minerality. acids emerge slowly but do bring the wine into balance as the oak integrates. tannins were soft but noticable, and should provide for good aging. ideally give it 3 years. fuller palate and a bit bolder than last years version.
