The color is similar if not slightly darker to the last time I had this six years ago. The nose shows some tertiary notes, the palate is sweeter than I recall. It is full of cassis, leather, dark chocolate and espresso. The tannins are fully integrated. The mouthfeel is that of whole milk. The finish is above average. This has aged perfectly and it is now at full peak. I don’t think there’s reason to wait any longer. Although the liquid is clear, there is a considerable amount of sediment, so decanting is advised. Sadly, PIP. (Past its prime). I wrote that last night and left most of it in an open decanter overnight. NOW...Beat my feet with a 2x4 and call me a flat foot, this baby opened up and is drinking so well! Beautiful aromatic nose, smooth in the mouth, very nice moderate tannins. Open, decant, and wait!
I thought this held up remarkably well. I was concerned when I had some issues with the cork. Dark fruit, blackberry, cherry, leather and tobacco. Finished it in one sitting, tannins were nicely integrated and it went well with the prime rib.

Deep red center, red rim with signs of age. Intriguing nose of strawberries in balsamic vinegar, bing cherries, blackcurrants, tar, some greenness, touch of mushrooms. Balsam on the start, lighter red fruit (strawberries, raspberries and some cassis), modest acid and tannin, wood and stalks, okay length on the finish of fruit and wood. At or slightly past its peak, drinking well.

Drank as part of a 1997-2000 Seavey Cab vertical. Showed well but was sandwiched between a stellar 1997 and lovely 1999. Drink over the next couple of years; will not improve.

This magnum came as part of the holiday wine shipment from Seavey, probably wouldn't have bought a 1998 otherwise. Decanted about 4 hours then consumed over the next few days. Very large amount of medium to large sediment. Typical old leather aromas. Tannins nicely integrated. Red to brown in color. Still some fruit hanging around here, but perhaps fading. Probably at it's peak now and on slow decline. Nice effort in a challenging year, but not enough fruit for my tastes.

This bottle was much more impressive than some previous bottles I had from the same lot. This one was remakably youthful and vibrant in its dark fruit profile, but was also very smooth to drink at this stage. Didn't have quite as much complexity as the Conn Valley, mostly due to the lack of the green streak, but was very lovely. I was amazed how lively and energetic this 16 year old bottle was from a supposedly bad vintage. Some previous bottles have started out very subdued and needed a lot of time to show decently, but not this one. Hope my last bottle behaves like this one.

On the nose dark fruits, blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and some chocolate. Firm tannins, will suck your mouth dry...as it should however still plenty of fruit to balance. Again, dark fruit on the palate - black cherry, blueberry, tobacco, almond, vanilla, and a light earthy woody note. Finish is soft and round. VERY IMPORTANT - previous bottles did not decant well and faded quickly. This time we popped and ran through a screen into a decanter and then filtered again back into bottle. It held up for over an hour just fine. DO NOT DECANT THIS WINE, beat it up in your glass and you can see what I mean. It will literally fade in your glass. Just pop and pour, would drink this every night. Easy 93.

Went up against a 1998 Le Machhiole Paleo and the Paleo took it down. The Seavey seemed to be very low in acidity and was a little flat, almost prune like tastes. Was good, but not thrilling.

There is clearly some bottle variation, but this bottle had a pristine cork and really kicked butt. Consistent with previous notes, this was tight and lean on the PnP so was decanted a few hours at cellar temp. Maybe some very faint bricking at the edges, but overall this bottle was incredibly youthful! In a blind tasting, would never have guessed the age. This had ample fruit, great acidity and still good tannic structure. Not at all flabby or heavy, this is a wine with energy and verve. As it warmed in the glass, additional secondary characteristics started to emerge: forest floor, eucalyptus, graphite, leather, and a hint of tobacco. Somewhat in the direction of Bordeaux. Was a great pairing with a grilled porterhouse. As I have said before, this is great winemaking in a difficult vintage. If you have any of these and they have been well stored, decant for a few hours and enjoy. But this can probably still run a few years it it is a good bottle. Glad I have 2 more...

This wine has grown on me. Started with a bit of a green tea or bitter element that has resolved itself. Nice black fruit and earth profile with a strong grip and finish. Don't see this wine going 20 years, so I would drink up in the next few years.

Waited a bit too long to consume this last of 3 bottles. The first two were outstanding. While certainly very drinkable, this bottle was less fruit filled and a bit more earthy than earlier bottles. While there are certainly exceptions, just goes to show its time to drink the '98's.

had discarded one of my others as flawed, so did not have high expectations for this one - definitely drinkable, but honestly not all that impressive - seemed a bit thin - unusual given what I know about other Seaveys we have (I'm a member of their club) - really wonder whether there were some provenance/care issues with this Cinderella purchase.

Lovely nose of plum and currant - surprisingly fresh for a wine this age. More earthy secondary and tertiary notes on the palate - autumn leaves, leather, herbs, with some fruit still present. Mild/moderate tannins. Drinking great now. Lots of sediment, so consider filtering or decanting (although most of the sediment in our bottle was stuck to the sides). We did not decant - wine was open and ready to go.

Not great notes as this was a few days ago and was focused on more meaningful things. It still has a lot of solid tannins so I recommend decanting and a filter. After a 4 hr. decant it was great and it helped us get through Hurricane Sandy. Very nice, lengthy finish.

Wow...just what I would expect from an aged Napa Cabernet! Requires decanting for at least an hour before sampling to allow the sediment to settle. Still has a medium plus texture. Primarily a tertiary profile at this juncture: tobacco, leather, earth, dark chocolate covered cherries, black tea, and ripe black plum. Very smooth with well integrated tannins. Seriously great wine. Other than some considerable sediment and a dry cork, this one is still very enjoyable. Moderate finish, but starting to fade just a little. I think it should drink well for another year or so.

I think I finally figured out this wine! Bought several of these on the $30 deal from WineLibrary. The first bottle was great. The next couple of bottles were very tight and muted and unimpressive. But there were signs that the wine was starting to open in those cases. This time, I popped it in the morning and poured off half to a clean 375 right away. Tasted a bit of the other half and same story: very muted and thin. So I decanted that half bottle in the wine cellar for the entire day (7-8 hours). After it warmed up a bit to 60-65 deg, the wine was drinking great. Nice red fruit, some leather and cedar notes, as well as a bit of a green streak that I liked (eucalyptus?). Fine but present tannins and nice acidity give it structure. Not hugely concentrated, but very nicely balanced and very smooth. I'm amazed that a 14 year old Cab would need this much air time to open, but what a difference it makes. If you have some of these, try giving it lots of air. I have 3 bottles left and am glad that I now know how to go about getting them to drink well. Overall, an impressive mature cab from a difficult vintage -- good winemaking here.

Really nice bottle of wine. Medium garnet color. Herbal and earthy on the nose. Soft, round and well balanced. Drank side by side with a 2005 Ch. Reignac. The Seavey was more Bordeaux like than the Reignac. No doubt a result of the age but a delicious well balanced bottle at peak. Gala celebration with all 3 boys at home.

Tons of sediment, but after straining through a filter, the look is a nice translucent ruby red, with maybe just the faintest trace of bricking. The nose is nice and fruit-forward cherry and raspberry, with a nice floral component. Early on the palate shows a substantial bitterness to it. Two hours in, though, that bitterness disappears, and the wine turns beautifully smooth. The finish is medium length, but with good balance. Overall, I don't like this quite as much as I did the last time, but it is still excellent wine that is worth the $30 price paid. This is at peak now, but may be able to last another year or two before it starts to drop off.

Popped for dinner with Alex, Anne, Mark, and Josh. Was VERY tight and closed upon opening. Started to come around in about 90-120 min in the decanter. Next bottle I will decant for a few hours before drinking. This is nice wine but was blown away on this night by a '99 Togni cab and an '06 Quilceda Creek

The color was very dark garnet with some bricking around the edges. The nose was a intriguing mix of fresh cut green peppers, with hints of bitter chocolate. For me, the greenness stayed on the nose and not on the palate. The taste was jammy red fruit mixed with plum and mineral notes. The mid-palate was a nice bing cherry taste and the finish was very long. The texture of the wine was silky smooth to almost chewy. This bottle if proof that there are great wines from not so great vintages!
Decanted for 2 hours Lots of sediment, almost all of it stayed in the bottle.

This would have been a great bottle but for the hint of green, medicinal tomato juice or rose hip. Some people are sensitive to this, others are not. I am. At a recent tasting it was suggested this was caused by a ripe vintage that may not have seen ideal storage. I believe it. As the bottle stayed open, this character got less pronounced.
Other than that, there are dark fruits on the nose and developing tertiary character. Smooth palate, not much tannins but lively acid that keeps he wine young. But for the rose hip, this is in its prime drinking window for me.

Decanted for 2 hours at cellar temp. Upon pouring, this was not as good as recent bottles. It was a bit green and austere. After another 1-2 hours as the wine warmed, it started to come around and flesh out. Ended up being pretty nice but not up to previous bottles. Have a few more to try. Give this plenty of air.

Very dark in the glass, approaching black, this wine smells of sweet cassis and blackberry with some dark toffee and fresh leather. The palate begins with good, ripe black raspberry but has solid, smooth, well-integrated structure on the mid-palate. The finish is somewhat astringent, and surprisingly long, with just enough acid to restore the palate after some time. Really smooth and delicious, this was a brilliant accompaniment to pan-seared steak with trimmings. The wine held up very well to the fat and char, while providing a nice fruity contrast. This wine is surprisingly lively for its 14 years, although I don't think any further positive development is likely. If you have this, it's time to drink up. Every bit the equal of the 2000 Seavey, in my opinion, and very much worth the $30 WL price point, I'm looking forward to my second and last bottle. Good stuff.

Brought to Jo Jo, popped and decanted. This bottle was much more restrained than the last one, but started to open up after about 60-90 minutes. Previous bottle had been decanted for 3 hours in cellar. So air time seems to help this wine. Smooth and balanced, overall very pleasant mature cab. Good deal for $30 from Wine Library

Decanted and aired for 2 hours, lots of residue; mild herbaceousness, dark ripe fruit, rounded, complex, mild acidic and tannic expression on the finish. Pair this with a lighter seasoned meal, let the complexity shine through.

1st of 3 bottles bought from WineLibrary during a special deal some weeks ago. This bottle was outstanding! Nice mix of red and black fruits, with some herbal qualities on the finish. The big surprise here was the structure (both acidic and tannic). There was a lot more backbone to this than I expected, and overall this came across much younger than I expected for a '98. Great mouthfeel and quite smooth, but not at all flabby or tired. Very nice mature cab made in a more traditional style.
Fantastic work by Seavey in a difficult vintage. This is probably as good an example as any of the idea that one can get good values by buying wines from great producers in tough vintages. This is a very well made wine -- kudos to Seavey. And to WineLibrary for this great deal. This wine is still available for $30 at WL and I just bought 3 more bottles. One of the best deals I've gotten. If the other bottles are equally good, I will be a happy camper.

The Seavey is drinking very well and in the sweet spot of its drinking window. The nose provides a combination of floral, moss and mineral notes. The Seavey reveals red fruit, spice, a bit of vanilla and oak on the palate. It also required a full 90 minutes to reveal its complexity. This is a traditional cab, stylistically much like a left bank Bordeaux. Celebrating Linda's birthday with Rick, Linda, Bob and Gloria.

Purchased 2 bottles. First one was spoiled due to age, oxidized badly. Second was pretty good though. Very tight. Wine almost felt young. Needs a good decant for breathing and for the huge amount of settled tannins in this wine. I don't know if I would sit on these too long. One bottle was bad but the cork seemed to be in good shape. The other was like a baby indicating there is a lot of age left on this wine. I didn't think the wine was particularly that good however. Not bad by any means but I have to disagree with all the big scores from the other reviewers. It was just very average. The notes would indicate there is a lot of bottle variation maybe? My own 2 would indicate this as well.

Tight nose, but darker fruits, and leather for what was there. Tasted of dark fruits(blackberries and blueberries) with muted notes of oak and leather on the background. Tannins were present, a little mouth pucker, but didn't completely dry out the mouth. A very nice aged Cab. Not mind altering, but very please drinking experience.

Deep crimson color, with a brick red rim shows a bit of age. Sweet nose, savory palate. The nose is highly concentrated and mature. Reductive notes black currant marmalade and creme de cassis. The initial attack is that of a four year old, not a 14 yr old wine. Tannins are furry, evident but not overwhelming. Acid in check, fruit is gorgeously grown up. Time has done good to this bottle, very good.

This wine was not even close to ready at 1.5 hrs. in the decanter (good bit of sediment when decanting, so recommend this), but around 3 hours it got itself together and at 4.5–5 hrs. it was really in its spot, showing green pepper, jalapeno, eucalyptus, cigar box, potting soil, and dark fruit on the nose and palate (minus jalapeno and any spice you may associate with that on the latter). Pretty complex and layered wine at this point, but certainly tannic and somewhat disjointed until properly aerated. Interesting to contrast this to the 2000 from a few nights ago, which somehow seemed more "aged" with more browning to the coloring and restraint to its constitution, as well as being more red fruit focused. Both very enjoyable, however.

Four Cali CAbs over three days; 9/10/2009-9/13/2009: This wine started a little austere, but turned out very very good. I love the way 1998's are drinking now, it almost had a Barolo profile. This started with a little asphalt and fertilizer, then gave way to a dark fruited, not too ripe wine that was great with food. The last bottle of a case I bought a few years ago.

A great wine with many years left.
Decanted for 2 hours
Lots of sediment, almost all of it stayed in the bottle.

Good stuff.
