  • Vergelesses is generally considered Savigny's best vineyard and Bize its best exploitant. From a somewhat challenging vintage, Patrick Bize came through outstandingly -- strawberry aromas and flavors, minerality, a smooth texture, lightness on the palate, length, definition. This wine is now in early maturity but has the potential to last many years and still improve. Cellared since original release.

Add on edit -- this wine is opening further with breathing in the glass and addiing spice and other complexity to nose and mouth.

  • Light red. Full of fresh red fruit with some gamey and barnyard notes. Medium on tannins but high acidity, some red fruit and black pepper. Decently balanced and good length finish.

  • Pretty good showing. The bricked complexion and earthy aromatics show a good amount of development and primed me for an autumnal showing in the fashion of many 2008s of late, but this surprised me with denser, glossier fruit material than most still have to offer - plummy and not austere. The stem inclusion is still noticeable with its sapidity and pleasant snap of greenery. The remaining tannin actually feels fairly refined but it shows its Savigny rusticity in its earthy inflections. I don't know where this is going from here, but it certainly seems to have the opportunity for further improvement.

  • This was pretty tight at first , but after an hour or so of air it really showed well. Red and black raspberries, citrus zest, and a touch of coffee. Supple tannins, juicy acids, and a long minerally finish. Young, fresh, zesty and delicious. A-

  • Much more resolved than 7 years ago. Nice and balanced now

  • My first bottle of this and wasn't sure how to handle it. Double decanted at 2:00, served at 7:30. That was not the right way. The wine was best, by quite a ways, within the first 90 minutes after opening. The aromas maintained throughout, but the acid/fruit balance that was barely there initially, gave way and on the palate the wine was simply not pleasurable. It was angular and acidic without the fruit to balance, and although there were notes of Savigny earth and mineral, it's just not a wine of pleasure, the way I treated it. Open, drink over 60 minutes is the way I'd do this next time, and even then it's never going to be a great wine, but get in there before the fruit is overtaken by the rest of the wine...

  • Brought to a casual dinner, blinded, pnp. Drinking nicely now with tannins mostly resolved. Folks guess as Chamobolle with its alluring bouquet.

  • Light ruby to pale garnet at the rim. Effusive right from the go with aromas of cranberries and raspberries and blood orange, with some floral and earthy notes emerging as well. Light to medium bodied on the palate, with bright crunchy fruit, silky texture and an energetic but airy feel. The acidity determines the character of the wine, but it's perfectly integrated with the fruit and doesn't stick out even a little. Still, a food wine, as the previous helpful note says. Moderate and very fine tannins remain. Long finish reprises the blood orange and floral notes of the nose. This is very good and certainly in the early part of its drinking window. It should age nicely on its balance for some time to come, but I don't know that it has a tremendous depth to it.

  • This has developed really nicely; the nose is now showing some tertiary development with forest floor and mushroom/earthy notes, underlying this is still some lovely red berry fruits and dried floral notes; the palate shows the 08 acidity, but has enough underlying concentration to keep it from feeling shrill; that said, it is absolutely a food wine and is markedly better with food; I served this with a mushroom risotto and the brightness of the wines acidity with the richness of the risotto was great. Seems pretty much around its peak maturity, but will likely hold here for 3-5 years.

  • Kind of muddled flavors and aromas, not sure if the bottle has a flaw as past couple were delicious. At any rate, my last one and tough to judge. Left half bottle to revisit tonight.

  • Showing a little age in the color and nose (in a good way). With air it comes to life and reveals a lively wine with bright fruit and zippy acidity. No rush to drink but in the zone for my tastes.

  • Bouquet of red berries, smoke and rocky mineral.
Tart red cherries on the entry with fairly high acidity, medium flavors of red fruits, berries, plums with stony minerals and rusticity on the palate. Got darker over time but somehow the acidity is just too disturbing at this stage.

  • Pop and poured. At B&B PP. Drank later in the night with more air also.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet edge. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of fresh earth, red cherry, fresh strawberries, stony minerality, and interesting slight cream and biscuits.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), rounded medium- tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, red plums, earth, stony and tangy minerality. Darker character with more air, showing dark red and black cherries. Long finish, but with an unpleasant sour plum note. Rounded mouth-feel and tannins while still showing rusticity.
Feels like it should have been drunk earlier rather than later.

  • Found a couple of these in the cellar. Popped and poured. Very elegant burgundy with a long finish. Very nice drink and I will drink the second bottle this year.

  • Strawberry hint of violet. Did not have high acid due signs of the vintage but very balance and harmonious instead. Well made.

  • This is my first Bize wine and it is delightful, but still quite young. The nose is fantastic and intriguing with lots of red berry fruit, anise, clove, leather, mineral notes, and a beautiful floral note. The palate is super young with very noticeable tannins that are nicely integrated, but still quite present. This needs at least another 3-4 years, but will be great when it is ready.

  • Thick and fruity. I think it needs some time to resolve.

  • This was popped and poured on a whim tonight. I was afraid this might be shut down, given that some of the '08s seem to be entering that phase of their lifespan, but this was absolutely lovely. Bright red fruits & orange pith on the nose. The palate is dominated by zesty acids & fine grained tannins. This is all about purity. As delicious as it is now, there is tremendous upside here. Fantastic qpr. I shoulda bought a case (or two!).......

  • This is really refined and polished Savigny that retains enough bramble/savory rusticity that I associate with the best producers like JM Pavelot and Ecard (old stuff). Not sure the critical notes are accurate, while this has the legs to last, it drinks swell right now.

  • Bize Blind Tasting: Nice nose with initially dark fruits that evolve to red fruits with time in the glass. Some maraschino cherry, a touch of expresso and gamey notes. Tight. Very fresh on the palate, red berries with light and subtle stemmy and green notes. A serious and very good wine ! Worth to wait a few more years.

  • Drank over several hours, never really opened up. My first experience with the producer, seemed well made but very shut down. I fear the 08s might be closing down some, though we shall see. I would avoid opening based on this experience, or plan on several hours of air before the first glass.

  • Somewhat disappointing. It has a nice silky texture, and it does show elegant and finessed, but it is lacking intensity and verve. Very straight-forward and light strawberry and raspberry fruit with some earthiness. Slightly hollow on the mid-palate and short on the finish. An OK bottle of wine to drink with some very delicate dishes, but a perplexing change to other Bize efforts from 2008 or other Vergelesses from prior vintages. I know it wasn't corked, and it didn't seem heat damaged. I am definitely puzzled with how ho-hum this wine is. With a price of almost $50 per bottle, this is a major pass.

  • Lovely, pure, and long. Didn't come across as especially closed at first, but nevertheless drank even better with several hours air. Black cherries and raspberries, clean vibrant acids, earth, fine length. This really should have a chance to blossom in cellar but damned I enjoyed. A-

  • Gorgeous young Burgundy. The intense nose shows tart red fruits, dusty minerals, and earth. The palate is very acidic but the concentrated fruit keeps the balance intact. In fact, the fruit, acidity, minerality, and dried herb qualities are all so intense and focused that this is almost too much on the first sip. It mellows some with air but also closes up a bit. Loads of potential in this one.

  • La Paulee de NY - Grand Tasting (2008 Vintage) (Metropolitan Pavilion, NYC): delicious. light fruit does not overwhelm, but integrates well with fine tannins. finish carries seamlessly.

  • La Paulée de New York 2011: Sweeter, tamer than the Liards; brownish color was surprising. Resounding meh.
