Ornate metallic, minerally nose screams out of the glass. Like so much Grand Cru I've been lucky enough to try--eg. a Corton Charlemagne's steely streak. A bit yeasty beer on the finish.
Normally I couldn't give a damn about color, but WOW, this is a gorgeous purplish red of such intensity it floored me. Alain explained he's making a killing with this with restaurants. More power to him. Slightly carbonic nose blowed off quickly after pouring, revealing a simple but pretty wine. Pure fruit. Could liken to many other simple charmers in different varietals.
Green nose, these wines were unimpressive and served too cold. I'm not a fan of this type of Chablis. This wine bored me. The series left an unending acid burn on our palates for the rest of the Paulée.
Aie. The hail added a terrible bite to this, and Dominique noted he was losing money on this wine. Too sweet, as is the case with much 08 Beaune region wines. Acid, a bit hot, just rough. Ouch.
WHAT a pretty nose! Elegant, little apparent oak. Jean Soubeyrand, a likeable young chap, explained the oak regime: only 15% new, medium toast. Cat pee actually surfaced towards the end of my glass--which I relished. Not too complex of a wine, but loveable all the same.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Obviously the most elegant wine poured, as it deserves. A great deal of clay which affects drainage on this parcel. Just couldn't get over how elegant it was. A slight touch of oak on the finish, and just a bit syrupy. Benoit Riffault explained how they go for a concentrated elegance, and likened it to a certain grilled/toasted quality (obviously referring to bread), and then he apologized for using what he feared might be a cryptic wine descriptor. I told him to let loose; I'm the last person in the world who'd shit on him for really getting into the nitty-gritty of wine experience. What the hell is this universal French shame in using precise and novel descriptors? It's not hubris: it's human communication.
Well, the Lafarges are the most adorable couple in the whole world, and I want them as my grandparents. Just wholesome people. Unfortunately, as natural winemakers, they had a rough time with 08, and it was evident in their Beaune-based wines. As with most 08 Beaune, this came across as sweet; also had a tone I can only describe as "winey". Showing rather boring at this point, I confess. I wouldn't invest to age this, personally.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Nose still reeks of sugar, but this offers a much more supple palate and texture which redeemed it. Acid. Probably not worth my money. I'd take the GC Cazetiers over this any day.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru
Always delicate, La Grande Rue, as Mme Lamarche explained. Pretty nose; restrained and elegant, as you'd hope. ELEGANCE impressed on your palate. May improve a great deal over the years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Nice nose; green a touch? Peppery palate with nice acid. Not too complex at this point. Amazing residual aromatics in the glass suggest a long flowering life. 90 for where it is now.
