Had this at Antrim 1844 in Taneytown, MD. Great stuff, about as good as it get for Pinot. Although its in a great spot right now, there is still lots of life ahead for this one. I was impressed how much fruit was still present.

2021 Jadotfest (La Trompette, London): Darkest ruby. Dense. A densely savoury barnyard. Really bright and vibrant, slightly lifted blue fruit. A sense of the exotic with a lick of acidity on the finish to keep things in check. Evolves quite a lot in the glass, losing its joke de giver, and then recovering to a more classical frame. Extra density over the Gevrey 1er flight, but not quite the pizazz for immediate pleasure. ****

A very good, if somewhat four square, mature red Burgundy. Good amounts of spice in the fruit that seems somewhat held back by the grippy 1996 structure. Solid but not as special as the 96 Gagey bottling.

Monday Night Football and Grand Cru (Chicago, IL): This probably wasn't the best showing of this wine; the bottle today seemed thin and acidic (so more in line with typical 1996s instead of the Jadot exception). The fruit here is tart, and while it sweetens up on the midpalate, it doesn't build up to something enough to counterweight all the acids on the back end, whereupon this wine seems to collapse in on itself. There are nice mature Burgundy flavours here, but I wanted more.

A beautiful nose of sous bois, earth and dark berries. The palate has high acidity with notes of dark cherries, forest floor, iodine and black fruit. A tasty wine that is very much ready to drink.

A lovely Jadot Clos St Denis. Animal, dark fruit, smoke and herbs. Lovely sweetness on the palate with good energy and grand cru depth. Superb value in today’s crazy world.

Not as “stern and gritty” as prior bottle a couple years ago; tannins more resolved and acidity better integrated with the dark, almost blueberry fruit; offset with some really nice savory umami quality. Very elegant and balanced. 93+

Dinner with Jacques Lardière at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): I believe, from the same lot as the bottle last month, and showing far, far better. Apparently all it needed was a generous amount of air. Now, we are getting tons of black fruit and spice, with a touch of smoke as well. The palate is filled out, with black fruit and racy acids balancing each other out. It doesn't come across as angular as many other 1996s. Really lovely stuff.

1996 Jadot Horizontal (Chicago, IL): So this bottle did not have an indication that this was from Domaine Andre Gagey, and the bottle of the label included the Kobrand import sticker. In any case, without an explicit indication, I'm writing this note under the non-Domaine wine. Of course, all of the above is moot, since I seemed to have picked up a hint of TCA on the nose (not everyone got it). This was a largely unimpressive wine, with a somewhat thin disposition on the palate, and lots and lots of acid.

I was really looking forward to drinking this one but sadly, it fell short for me tonight. I was thinking, "could there still be too much Jadot oak in play after 20+ years?" Another table mate who recently sourced it speculated that perhaps the btl wasn't stored as well as he hoped for. I really appreciate Kevin going for some of these older btls as they can rock when they're on. It seemed to have a dullness about it. Drinkable but not exciting.

Some Nice Burgs at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Medium plus dark red color. PNP, with some serious cork surgery here. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This bottle while solid, was nowhere near as good as the one we had about 2 years ago. More vegetal notes and a suggestion some heat issues, yet this still had an essence of what I recall: tart red berries, dried herbs, vegetal, mineral. The palate shows tart red fruits, a strong mineral component, long and earthy on the finish with some nice spice. 91 to 91+pts.

Very stern and gritty on day 1 with just a PNP; on day 2, way more open and relaxed; rich fruit with hints of shoe polish and church incense. Needs serious time to open up but once there, very nice wine.

WineBerserkers Burgundy Dinner (Garcon, San Francisco): Aromatic nose with high complexity, red berries, slight cluster, slight green, slight earth; palate is light bodied, balanced medium acid well integrated, tannins very slightly drying, good red fruit; medium length finish. This is very nice with good complexity, clean, ready to drink now. 92-94

Same bottle as Chablis28 and Rocknroller. I agree with their notes. This was singing from the moment the cork was popped. In a perfect drinking window. Will likely hold (and might even improve) for many, many years. Just lovely.

A Hedonistic Night of Burgs, Bordeaux, and CDP at Tilia (Tilia, Mpls): Medium maroon color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. This was just singing right from the start. I love the nose, everything I want with a sultry earthiness and potpourri of floral aromas, cinnamon, spices. The palate is wonderfully earthy with a light medium body, cherry fruit, deeply flavorful and sexy, with grainy tannins that say drink me now. Loved it. I thought this held up quite well through the evening, and didn't really feel it dropped off noticeably.

Oddly enough, this started out more open than it's '01 Gros Frere Richebourg table mate but over time started to close up some and become more youthfully linear. This was great though for the first 30-60 minutes as it appeared to be 100% ready to go with ethereal soil aromas and flavors. The tannins also were relatively smooth so none of the often more challenging '96 texture. I enjoyed this wine very much and most of my sips were while it was singing.

Brian's Birthday Surprise (Extra Space Boon Keng, Singapore): A lot better than the last bottle we had. This had a beautiful nose, with floral hints and sweet blueberry and black cherry notes, and then earth and meat and metallic mineral, with just that hint of toasty spice alongside earth, metallic mineral, earth, meat, awesome nose, blueberries, black cherries, toasty spice - a complex mix of sweet and savoury aromas, great stuff. The palate seemed a lot more developed and giving than the last bottle. While there was a touch of austere meanness that somewhat curtailed the pleasure that the last bottle had, this was rather rounder and somewhat fleshier, showing a pleasing softness to its lovely depth and breadth as it unfolded in gentle layers of cherries and berry flavours and an infusion of fragrant spice, all glowing with a sweet purity. Very elegantly balanced and poised I thought, complex yet subtle. Nice long finish too, with a juicy length full of gummy blueberries, dashes of warm spice and some flower stalks. It was just at the very end that a hint of brambly hardness set in. Otherwise, this was very good indeed, and just starting to drink well. It may lack some of the depth and power of a great Clos St Denis, but I enjoyed it.

William & Gina's Wedding (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): Very good, if not exactly firing on all cylinders. This bore a real family resemblance to the 2007 Jadot Clos St Jacques that was served earlier in the night - both were rather spare, elegant versions of usually fleshier, more generous wines, so much so that I guessed this as a 1996 Jadot Clos St Jacques when first served blind. On reflection though, the profile was quite classic Morey, especially on the nose, which showed the typically darker fruit profile of blueberry and dark cherry aromas, along with some stony mineral earth and a good whiff of Morey spice. A little subdued maybe, but a pelasant bouquet. The palate was still quite markedly influence but the more austere elements of the 1996 vintage, with well-shaped but slightly stubborn tannins and lots and lots of juicy acidity running through otherwise nicely pure flavours of blue fruit along with sour cherries and a touch of orange peel. This had the feel of a wine that still needs a few more years to really show its best - at the moment, it was all about transperancy of fruit and nobility of structure along with decent, if not entirely impressive depth and scale for a Grand Cru. I liked the overall elegance and polish of it all though - this was very stylish. It had a nice finish too, which slid away with amother brust of Morey spice nestling amidst juicy blue-fruited tones. I would wait a good 3-4 years more on this to see how it goes. It is one of those 1996 wines that seem to promise more, but that also make you wonder if they will ever come around. If the fruit does not die out before the structure softens, I think this will go on to be quite a lovely drop.

Starts out with a surprisingly high toned spicy, minty and herbal fragrance, and comes across surprisingly youthful on the palate with a core of polished red and dark fruit gently framed by oak in the background. There's a sense of both polish and power here, impressive length though it shows a little grainy tannin on the back end, and I get the impression there's a lot of time ahead.
