Opened/decanted 1 hr. before blind tasting, re-bottled after 30 minutes. Aging changed the profile and the majority of the tasters voted this as a cabernet sauvignon.

This bottle was not past prime and is near a good drinking stage. Nose was subtle, but showed some high toned red fruits. Palate showed lots of cranberry fruit with notes of cherry, and pomegranate. Oak mixes in on the finish that ends slightly drying, but pleasant nonetheless with earthy nuances too. Very good, but not excellent, just finished a bit short with a bit too much cranberry for my tastes.

Dissapointing, should have opened a couple of years ago, didn't age as well as I would have expected. Fruit is muted and a bit more tannic than pleasant.

Last bottle must have been off. This 375 seemed light at first but added weight with 30+ mins of bottle air (not decanted.) Modest nose has some faint green notes, maybe turpentine too. While this is light on the palate and should be consumed shortly, the dark red fruit flavors still have some heft even if the tannic structure is more than 50% gone.

Last had this bottle about a year ago. Reading that note I don't think I gave it enough air. I let it sit in the glass for 90+ minutes this time. Muted dark fruit on the nose, silky mouthfeel and nice medium long finish with the good kind of tannins. Now I am sad I don't have more as I think there is room to improve in 1-2 years.

We found this bottle languishing on the shelf of our local grocery store, so we snapped it up, having recently tasted the very big and tight 2012 vintage. We served it with a home made rustic pizza and the pairing was really nice together. We poured through an aerator into a decanter and drank a glass right away. The nose smelled faintly of wood or hickory and aging has let this wine round out a bit. Initially tasted like currants, nice and soft and a little bit tart/bitter, but then the finish brought the tannic flavor that I am used to from Keenan's merlots. Tannins in the finish gave it a bit of structure. It tasted best paired with the food; we let it sit in the decanter for two more hours after we finished eating, and I can't say it opened up much more beyond the first hour. It was OK for me, but I continue to prefer Keenan's cab francs and Mailbox Reserve to the NV Merlot. Tasting an older vintage of this one did not change my mind.

From a 375. Stewed prunes and alcohol on the nose. Hint of glycerin. Structure dissipating, red plums and tart red cherry with a fleeting finish. Upon opening I was inclined to pass on the bottle and pour it out; 30 mins of air gave it some structure and a bit more weight, but still beyond its time.

From a 375. Fresh cut pine on the nose, hints of glycerin. Some off notes upon opening blew off within 30 mins, uneducated. Mouthfeel has an elegant silkiness with muted cherry fruit, cassis, earth. This is easily enjoyable and unlikely to improve, at least in this format.

Popped & poured as we enjoyed a couple of glasses after dinner in the lounge. Aromas of chocolate-covered cherries, plum and black fruit. Tannins have softened a bit and have a sweet edge. Flavors of cherry, chocolate and plum with hints of pepper on the finish. Very nice.

New World Blind Tasting Group $25+ (Bin 75): Dark core with dull garnet crimson rim; currant, red and dark fruit, vanilla, green note; currant, taut structure, vanilla, some blueberry; good; quite different from the 2010 served wine before last.

Pop and pour from .375. Vanilla, oak, white pepper on the nose. Nice grip on the glass with a silky mouthfeel that coats the palate nicely. Fine dusty tannins, dark fruit, stewed prune, earth and faint spice. A great $11 bottle. Best through 2016 or '17.

Wow, I was very surprised how long this merlot took to open up. Decanted for 2 hrs and just wasn't open at all. Left it until next night in decanter and was really developing well. Still a bit tight but no patience to let sit any longer. This definitely drinks more like a cab than a merlot. I won't open another for at least 3 yrs, but should be excellent until 2018. I rate this a 91 on night 2, but i could give an extra 2 extra points for the potential. 91-93 points.

This wine had years left; not unlike all those from Keenan. Although once decanted for the requisite 2 hours, it really rounded out and started to shine. Initially, a brooding, tannic monster. By my final glass, it was showing bright, blue fruits with a mineral undercurrent, reminiscent of right bank Bordeaux. The mid-palate was likewise dominated by a mineral driven, nearly steely character, which wrestled with the acidity and segued into a finish complete with chalky, assertive tannins. All in all, I liked this much more than their Carneros bottling.

Deep, dark red. The wine has good clarity but a lot of light is needed to see it! Very tight on opening with alcohol and tannins masking everything but just a hint of dark cherry at the very end. As the wine opens up, dark fruits become increasingly prominent and things come together. Highly recommend a decant at this point.

Uncorked but not decanted for 90 mins prior to drinking. Solid mountain fruit, good depth and structure. Ripe red fruit, some cocoa and crushed stone with a silky mouthfeel that lingered for 15-20 seconds. Wine began falling apart 5 hours after opening, but very enjoyable up until that point.

Not a huge merlot fan but this one had all the right stuff last night - enjoyed with dinner last night following a wine tasting at Bonterra restaurant in Charlotte put on by the Wine Vault. Big but balanced, not jammy at all, full bodied with a good solid mouth feel. Nose slightly sweet with mocha, red berries and a hint of vanilla, primary flavors of more red then black fruit, chocolate and a hint of oak with none of the bitterness detected that a couple of the earlier tasting notes reflect. I would definitely decant this wine. I do recommend tihs wine and at the average CT price point this is not a bad QPR wine at all.

Rich and young feeling, but with an old world feel. Not your regular floral CA Merlot. Full bodied but not a fruit bomb, good acidity, and a long, dry finish. Some slight bitterness in the midpalate that seems to diminish with air, I think this will get smoother with time and be even better.

Popped and poured through an aerator. Tight at first, but loosened up nicely. Probably could stand for a long decant or even some more time in the bottle. A high-quality wine -- all kinds of red, blue, and black fruits, more berries than cherries, with dark chocolate coating them all. Noteworthy tannins, with a smooth, medium-length finish.

Need to restore Merlot's reputation after the movie Sideways? Try this textured and balanced wine. Tested on well-aired bottle, 3+ hrs. Alluring balanced powdery sweet floral-like nose with dusty cool spice (almost pinot like). Take time to smell it over and over. In the mouth soft plush embracing rich deep dark plummy berries spiced with a light pepper flowing into a lingering finish, with reasonable balance and well-integrated. 100% merlot. 14.3% abv. Body medium or higher, acid medium, tannin medium, maybe a bit lower. Reasonable QPR at USD30. I bought a bottle.
