Popped and poured. Medium bodied. Unbelievable floral nose. Red cherry, tea, herbs and spices. Impeccably balanced and elegant. Very good depth and verve. This is drinking very well right now but can continue to age for a long time.

Needs air, but shows real class. No over-ripeness, just ripeness, tell-tale chalkienes, good spice, a well round figure, but the acidity is very intact. Needs 5+ years IMHO #Møntergade#Ole&Ib

After 10hr slow ox, intoxicating nose of florals, sour dark cherry, black fruits, prune, mocha, tree bark, Chinese herbal medicine tea with hawthorn, dry leaves, smooth elegant & silky on the palate. This is just a baby, packed with tremendous depth & promises, patience will be well rewarded.
Day 2 (with total 22hr of air): RSV is finally singing with sweeter red berries, sweeter black fruits, sweeter hawthorn, prune, and perfume of roses, peonies, vosne spices, earth, wood with dry leaves.

Wine gathering at RJ's; 4/4/2023-4/7/2023 (South Carolina): Expressive youthful nose displaying super concentrated black fruit, blackberry concentrated, black cherry, mocha, rose, Chinese herbal medicine, Vosne spice, caramel, tree bark and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated opulent ripe black fruit, rich and intense but also fluid and weightless, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, sweet tannins, and a long intense black fruit driven finish with Chinese herbal medicine and caramel at the end. This is evolving slowly. Although really enjoyable with the opulent fruit, this can easily improve for a couple more decades, perhaps becoming a perfect Burgundy one day.

Wine Group Dinner #193, Harvey's Restaurant, Fortitude Valley. This is a beautiful wine that remains in the early stages of its evolution with a dense primary character to the nose and palate that opens slowly in the glass. The colour is dark and the nose fragrant with dark berry fruits, cherries and both floral and Asian spice characters. The palate is richly fruited yet has great elegance and length that define the weightless quality of this wine despite the depth of material. There is a clear touch of stems providing a herbaceous line through the palate which while not out of place will increase complexity with maturation. A beautiful wine only bettered by the 2005 in this decade line-up.

Another lost Friday afternoon gathering – Mostly Burgundies with a few from Piedmonte (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, blackberry jelly, black cherry, strawberry, strong stem with a hint of green, mocha, caramel, Chinese herbal medicine and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe concentrated black fruit, rich and intense yet also beautifully detailed and precise, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, very fine tannins and a seamless long concentrated black fruit driven finish with Chinese herbal medicine and caramel at the end. Truly impressive material and this will age gracefully for another three decades This is much more open than the previous bottle.

Slow oxed for a few hours. A spectacular showing, clearly a notch better than a bottle I recently have. This one combined the richness of the 2009 vintage with dark fruit and gingerbread with with great stalky elements providing freshness. Generous palate, mineralic finish. Very grand.

DRC Zoom Tasting (Mi Casa): 2009 RSV Slightly coiled nose displaying concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry, strawberry and rhubarb tart, noticeable stem, licorice, smoked meat, espresso bean, a hint of Vosne spice and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of coiled yet concentrated black fruit, rich and big yet silky and focused, good acidity, strong mineral, showing a bit of tannins/structure, and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with stem and dark spices at the end. It is not terribly expressive and not as polished and precise as the 09 Richebourg. This can easily improve for another three decades, perhaps like the 90 DRCs but not as ripe as there is a sense of coolness.

Ripe nose, quite ripe indeed for a DRC (much riper than the outer worldly 2008 GrEch next to it), dark fruit, sweet spices medium-full bodied for a Pinot, more and more as it sat in the glass a whole cluster note appeared at the end and provided additional freshness and complexity. Drinks wonderful now due to its softness but I would give it another 5 years to tame its exuberant fruit and bring out more tertiary complexity.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Single blind in 09/10/11/12 flight. Opened 5 hours before serving with a 5 minute double decant. The most unmistakably "DRC" of the flight with Ripe red and black fruit alongside complex spicebox. This kept changing more than any wine over the time this was in glass, and even through each taste. Its size and elegance made me think this was the 2010.

Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago – DRC RSV vertical, Selosse – Lieux-Dits and etc. (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Medium expressive nose displaying ripe black fruit, blackberry jam, black cherry, strawberry and rhubarb tart, strong stem, smoke, cinnamon and earth. Excellent concentration, concentrated black fruit, warm and round, good acidity and strong stemmy mineral and a long slightly coiled black fruit driven finish with strong stem at the end. The strong stem note and roundness make me to guess as the 11. This seems to shutdown a bit.

2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Youthful expressive nose displaying intense black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, cherry, stewed tomato, roasted berries, grilled celeriac, strong stem, ash and scorched earth. Exceptional concentration, intense concentrated black fruit, rich, round and oily, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long intense black fruit driven finish with stem and grilled celeriac at the end. Not as expressive and enjoyable as the August bottle. Starts a bit tight but opens up nicely. It still needs another decade to two to reach the youthful peak. Similar to the 99 but more naturally more youthful.

Prep for The Tenth Edition of the Villa d'Este Wine Symposium (Bistro Bis - Washington D.C.): Youthful hedonistic nose displaying opulent rich black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry jam, candied raspberry, a hint of stem, smoke and ash, Chinese herbal medicine, clove, tree bark and mineral. Unbelievable concentration, layers upon layers of rich black fruit, unctuous yet silky and weightless, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral presence and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with stem and Chinese herbal medicine at the end. This seems richer and more opulent than the 09 Dujac RSV. It is quite refined and complex but not compared to the 09 La Tache. The generous opulent fruit and the weightless palate make it a hedonistic experience. This is starting to show incredibly well in a very youthful way. However, this has enough fruit and structure to improve for another two decades or more.

This is just PACKED. The youngest, biggest, darkest in tone, and most brutally tannic red of the night, but already compelling enough to get lost in its depth. The fruit is thick in density and evocatively thick-skinned, flavors are midnight-black blackberries, by far the deepest of any vintage so far, structure is still very drying on the back end and this will need YEARS. This doesn't have a stereotypical 2009 personality in any way; not an easygoing, sunny-vintage wine at all but one with very emphatic structure and serious weight and gravitas.

DRC is DRC and there clearly is a reason for the price tag. This one clearly a world class wine with more fruit still than the Leroy. Lat bottle of the 09's which I think are fun to drink now although will be great in 10 years (and probably 20) as well.

J50 (Copenhagen): Wow. While still very young indeed, this was a candidat for WOTN with it's sublime showing, dry, firm, very rich, minerals here, a deep core of fruit, but also a great harmonious. This will be singing in 5 years or so, I think.

Expectations was extremely high and usually when expectations is as high as yesterday the wine tend to par or even be a bit disappointing. This one however did not at all disappoint. It delivered perfectly on every level, exceeded the expectations by far. A complexity in the glass that is hard to put in to words. First thing I had was charred campfire wood and burnt juniper from an old salmon smokehouse, perfectly balanced by intense aromas of cool raspberry and lingonberry jam, heather, white pepper and moist autumn leafs. Equally amazing on the palate. Medium plus body and pronounced flavor intensity, beautiful balanced by the perfect amount of acidity. Lingering aromas of crushed raspberry, smoke and clove spices is just some of many elements. Drinking this wine is truly a huge privilege and it really puts a great deal of respect to the people making it. It is hard to imagine that there can be anything else as good as this out there.

Aired for 4 hours in decanter. Oh god this is really something! The nose is immediately open and extremely good. Elegant and seamless concoction of violets, liquorice, eucalyptus, tobacco and bonfire. Tons of spice and power. I can smell this one all night long. And the palate! This is the highlight of the evening so far. The taste is completely mindboggling. How can anything taste like this? Extreme elegance paired with power and concentration from another world. Grown men around the table are getting goosebumps and tears in their eyes. The world stops spinning for a monent, as the paradox of otherworldly elegance combined with a hydrogen bomb of power puzzles everybody around the table. This is indeed a fist in a velvet glove. WOTN for many here tonight.

Haut-Brion dinner: Very, very young, with some herbal notes (almost) covering the elegant expression of the vineyard and the fruit. Still, this is burgundy showing elegance, grace, even lightness, but it will need time to come together. While this is of course on a high level, tasting vis-a-vis 2010, this goes to show the weakness of the 2009’s, when it comes to the top terroirs.

Top 09 and 10 red Burgundy tasting (Capital Grill at Tysons corner, VA): Surprisingly elegant. Bright red and black fruits, crushed cherries and blackberries, a hint of vosne spice, stem, coffee and sap. Bright and refined palate, sappy sweet fruits and nicely integrated tannins. It is a lovely wine with impressive core energy. Lovely but not as complex and hedonistic as the La Tache. This has a long life ahead.

DRC 2009 tasting (Operakällaren, Stockholm): Medium red colour. Intense nose with dark and red berries, spice, flowery notes with violet, very light hints at herbal character, well integrated notes of toasted oak barrels, very elegant. On the palate dark and some red berries, some sweetness of fruit in the attack, noticeable mid-palate minerality, good acidity, finely polished tannin, long and mineral aftertaste. Young, 94+
Darker fruit than DRC Échézeaux 09 and Grands Échézeaux 09, but more open nose than Grands Échézeaux and considerably less tannic.

Tasted at the DRC tasting against the rest of the 2009 line up. God damn this is good!! The color is deep and quite dark. On the nose there are smoke, blood, minerals/stone quarry with some dust in, a beauty and a sensuality you only can find in R.S.V. The fruit is so generous, round and soft, still there is a spine in there with acid and tannins to back this sweet, young, sexy, and deep fruit up for a long, long time to come. Very accessible already, even if this is still far from it’s prime drinking window. Consulting my notes the final concluding line says: Goddamn this is good!!! And it is!

A strange nose that was quite herbal and bunchy. There was certainly plenty of other things going on, including sandalwood and Asian spice. The palate was really good. Full and sweet but linear and chiseled.

Deep nose, blue and black berries, spice, already complex; very good balance and persistence, charming, open, high acid, some dusty tannin.

Opened at the Hong Kong Club, decanted and enjoyed over dinner.
Wonderful wine. Classic DRC nose coming through with bountiful red fruit, with plenty of backbone and minerality.
Needs 5+ years to get fully integrated, but I see upside in this wine and can't wait to revisit it when it's ready.

And it is!
