Another 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Half. Really hit the spot. Fresh and marmaladey nose, with lots of spice. Lime and tangerine rind on the palate... so delicious. Excellent length, the wine lingering beautifully.

Jonathan’s/Nick’s 04 Bordeaux (Hawksmoor Guildhall, London): Half. Mid to full amber. Sweet. Barley sugar. Very sweet, could do with more balancing acidity. A touch of medicinal saffron-led botrytis. Relatively one dimensional. Does what is says on the label but a one trick pony. ***1/2

This is a really gorgeous Sauternes and brings great reassurance at a time when some Chateaux are producing over extracted, dark wines with too much residual sugar. Glorious gold/yellow and oozing balance and elegance . Excellent acidity, lovely fruit and botrytis. This will go on for years and another example of 2004 being the most underrated Sauternes vintage in my memory. More often than not I prefer it to the 2001.

Last but one of a case. Drank at a birthday dinner. It was very popular. Colour deep yellow. Nice bouquet of orange and honey. Palate similar. The wine however tastes like it’s going over the hill. Time to drink up.

Very nice sauternes without the extra gear. Old english marmalade, saffron and caramel. Quite fresh while neither as powerful or as complex as stellar vintages. Still a joy to drink with mixed cheese.

From 375ml. Honey, pineapple, orange and caramel on the nose. Medium bodied (14% ABV) with apricot and golden peach upfront, adding honey, pineapple and other tropical fruits through the middle. Mid-body displays very good viscosity and roundness, mixed with tart orange towards the back and enough structure to provide a solid backbone. There's plenty of honey here, but it's an underlying river that all the other fruit notes are layered on top of. I'd be interested to compare this to a 750ml, but even in this smaller format in should have 5+ years left at this level. It will show some minor improvements as it slowly evolves and there's certainly no rush to drink, but drink by 2025 is a solid recommendation. While it will certainly be enjoyable beyond that point, you won't get as much out of it.

Nose: honey, clementines, vanilla, maple, meringue. Palate: juicy mango, pineapple, white chocolate, almond, caramelized banana. More viscous and less complex than a d'Yquem, but a damn fine substitute for 1/5 the price.

Excelente.

The first vintage with the new wine maker Pierre Montegut was a the product of a difficult harvest, the yields were only 5 hectoliters per hectare. Of that production, only 50% was used for the Grand Vin. Pineapple, honey, saffron, curry and burnt match notes make up the aromatics. The wine has a lemon meringue personality and a medium body that makes it a good sweet wine to pair with savory dishes.

Golden colour with thick windows on the glass. Starts a bit sulphuric on the nose, with petroleum but that goes away quickly after opening. Has caramel, honey, lychee, soy, and a fading hint of petroleum. Medium acidity, but slightly restrained on the palate. Some minerality comes through honey, pineapple, dried fruit and dates, burnt sugar and a tiny bit of grapefruit at the end (grapefruit not there on second day). Long aftertaste. Could probably age a decade, but drinks very well now. 3 = Very good

Yellow gold with a fresh and forward nose of honey, pollen, dried apricots, grapefruit, vanilla and lots of oak needing time to mellow. Full bodied and rich on palate with refreshing acidity, freshness and long finish. Shows depth of flavours, good fruit definition while has the potential to age more than a decade. Delicious with good balance.

Big, bold and sweet. Beautiful wine with taste of honey and lots of sweet ripe fruit (peach and apricots and apple) with just enough acidity to hold everything together in a tight beautiful finish. Still very young and it should develop beautifully for the next years.

At Tom Aikens Restaurant, South Kensington. No formal note. Attractive fresh nose with some candied stone fruit but also plenty of floral freshness. Notes of Saffron. Full bodied and sweet on the palate but with lovely contrasting acidity and a long slightly citrussy finish. Excellent.

Beautiful wine. Botrytis, vanilla, pear, and tangerine on nose. Pear, butterscotch, vanilla on palate. Not overly cloying or sticky, well balanced with smooth finish. So far our favorite sauterne. (A-).

WFA Bordeaux 2004 tasting by the Wine Review; 10/16/2008-10/17/2008 (Suntec City, Singapore): A pale yellow gold. I thought this a really good wine, just not very Sauternes in character. While richer than the Guiraud I had alongside, this still lacked some botrytised character. The nose was rather complex, showing caramelised soy, bread, peach and some grass in the background. Nice creamy palate, with a minerally strain running through spice and creamed peaches into a long, lingering finish. Not the most complex of wines, certainly not as good as the 2003, but all rather seamless and yummy. Think peaches and cream with a topping of golden syrup.

Pale yellow color, with some golden hues. Very aromatic nose, plenty of flowers, honeysuckle and candied fruits. Medium - bodied, with a good balanc between sweetness and acidity. Also good and spicy botrytis and flavors of honey, pineapple, tangerine and orange marmelade. Good but lacks of comlpexity. The 2003 vintage was much better. Perhaps needs more time to improve.

This is a wonderful 18 year old sweet wine from Bordeaux.
Showing lemons, citrus, yellow apples, pears, pineapples, honey and light earth.
Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity.
Sweet on the palate and well balanced with nice complexity.
Has a lovely nose that I really enjoyed. Kept on smelling on it for a long time.
Drinking wonderfully now, and will continues to age nicely in the next 20 years.
A tasty wine that doesn't need food at all, but will pair very nicely with Foie Gras.
A blend of mostly Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc.
14% alcohol by volume.
94 points.
$70.
