Clearly an impressive richness and density here, but a few things protrude more than I’d prefer- seems like new oak, while cluster haven’t fully integrated, and there are still some overt tannins on the finish. Not sure if there further upside.

First of two, bought on release. All of the parts are good, especially the nose, but the wine is pretty resolved and subdued, and I wonder whether it would have had more presence a few years ago, when perhaps there might have been more of an overt attractive “hook”.

Not in the happiest place. Opens with dark fruit with some raisined and jammy flavors but civilizes itself with a bit of time in the decanter, seguing first to a reddish profile without much fruit showing at all and then to fresher and snappier red fruits with some of its youthful energy back, along with that rusty earthiness. It shows a lean figure throughout, though, seeming to have absorbed most of its tannin.

13.0% alcohol. Dark cherry color. Slowly revealed its pretty aromatics, with dark cherry and berry fruit and ample earth on the nose. In the mouth, a delightful array of textures, from the velvety smooth palate to the bright acidity and the moderately tannic finish. With substantial air, and even into the next day, the fruit lightened to less black cherry and more red. Expansive and enjoyable, with plenty of upside to come. For sure three years and probably five would help this along. A-/A

Really lovely, especially with regard to the aromatics, which are exuberant with pine needles, roses, cinnamon, and smoke. Tannins are nicely resolved, with a silky mouthfeel and savory, spicy finish. Drinking beautifully now.

This is evolving in a very interesting direction. I can't believe it's only been four years since release, but the wine is already in a different place while still hitting a lot of the same notes. There is a dazzling array of flavors here with most of the plush, primary fruitiness giving way to tarter fruits like dried cranberry and even a twist of candied orange peel that's extremely reminiscent of the Calera pinots - I probably would have guessed this as a Calera on a blind pour. It also still features the iron and rusty mineral flavors that were here on day one. The most enticing thing about it continues to be the texture. On the entry it's stop-you-in-your-tracks cashmere refinement, but on the back end it shows a serious grippiness.

2008 Rhys (The Medlar, London): Again, completely different nose. Feels bigger and maybe a little fuller. Dense, minerally red fruit. Very rounded and flattering. A ripeness to this. So different to the others in this flight. Darker and fuller without brooding. ****

Tasted along with a number of bolder wines during the Super Bowl. This was giving off little to nothing on the nose, and didn't have much to offer. I tasted this over several subsequent days, and didn't note any improvement. I believe this was my second Rhys pinot, and may open a few more to see if this was on off bottle.

April 2012 Rhys Visit--Taste The 2010s (Rhys Estate (At The Winery)): Tasted alongside the 2010 Home, which was excellent. For this 2008, listed alc of 13.0% with 100% whole cluster and 0% new wood. Exotic aromatic, richer than the 2010 and certainly for me up a level in volume. The fruit just seems more dense to me, whereas the 2010 is more pure and acidity driven. Dark watermelon, dark strawberry and cherry juice. Where this wine succeeds is despite the higher volume level, it stays all together with a real intensity.

Rhys (Peking Duck House): Right from sip one the elegance of this wine just takes you aback despite its actually being very structured. It's tannic but the refinement of the tannins keep impressing on every sip. It has an airiness and dimension to it as well. This has by far the fullest panoply of flavors in this lineup. In contrast with the Skyline the taste of this seems almost strangely meaty and then picks up some of the iron-like reddish rocky flavors that I remembered in the 2004. If this isn't the best Home since then it's certainly the most complete.

Rhys Tour and Tasting (Various Rhys vineyards): Interesting to see the contrast between this wine and the Family Farm, which is right next door, on the other side of the San Andreas Fault. A tad darker than the Family Farm, with a higher toned nose, and lots of energetic red fruit. The structure seems a bit tighter and more austere than the Family Farm. Very nice.

Tour and Tasting at Rhys Vineyards (All over): Again very restrained nose. A touch more apparent red berries on the nose compared to the Family Farm, with some wet rock and rose petals. In the mouth, there is a rush of cherries and blackberries. Abundant acid accompany firm tannins. Good structure with clean progression to a lingering finish. No new oak in this wine. Leave this bottle alone for several years.

Atlanta Does Rhys Yet Again (Atlas Restaurant, Atlanta, GA): Dark cherry and menthol, very young and tannic, it still needs a good bit of time but should have the stuffing to make it.

Tasting at Rhys; 4/5/2012-4/11/2012 (Rhys Vineyards): Rich nose with stems and spice, palate shows slightly underripe deep cherry, nice texture, good balance.
